Chiang doesn’t write about some other uses of AI chatbots. For example: I haven’t used it this way myself, but apparently you can give an AI chatbot some text in another language and ask it to translate it for you. Some LLM’s have better language skills than others, and computer translation is far from perfect, so there’s something that’s still blurry about it. But the analogy to JPEGs breaks down a bit, because a JPEG isn’t also Photoshop, and an AI chatbot is also a text-processing tool.

The analogy to JPEGs works better when you’re using AI chat as a sort of search engine for hints.

Wow, I'm not used to seeing such accurate and well-explained computer science content in mainstream media. I wasn't familiar with him, but the the author is a science fiction writer with a bachelors degree in CS and an impressive Wikipedia page.

Props to him for a great analogy and ability to explain this stuff so clearly.

Ah, Ted Chiang. He wrote the short story on which Arrival movie was based on.

Because of a comment on Tildes a month or so ago, I picked up the whole collection that both those stories are in and I am loving it. He has such a developed, well-reasoned stance in the stories that is refreshing and absolutely enthralling. I, as someone interested in theologies, found Hell Is The Absence Of God to be a riveting, grounded take on Christian theology in the circumstances.
