Does anyone else remember the ~2 weeks after the 2016 election when fake news was a big conversation? Before the Democrats pointed the finger at Russia and before Donald Trump completely twisted and repurposed the phrase, we were talking about fake news on social media and how one of the most shared stories from that election cycle was a fake one claiming the Pope endorsed Trump. And the immediate answer back then, just like now, is that we need to find a way to regulate the way we share these fake stories and images.

Kinda misses the point though, right? The real problem is that we have a significant portion of the voter base that lacks the critical thinking skills and media literacy to determine fact from fiction. Obviously, that's a much bigger problem that calls for bigger, more systemic changes, but shouldn't that at least be part of the coverage?

The cynic in me will point out that conservatives will view this as a feature and not a bug. They aim to gut the education system; why would they be interested in discussing how to properly educate our people in critical thinking skills? It's anathema to me.

I don't know why more on the left side aren't talking about it though. Maybe because it's just one more pile of shit on an already full plate of dung.

When I was in school, there was a big push to teach critical thinking skills in every single class regardless of subject. And I remember even then there was a pushback. If the people who are trying to kill public education, a good number of them want people to be uneducated altogether.
