But given the way billion dollar corporations work as constantly borrowing debt, this is unlikely even if it becomes profitable.

And that mentality of "don't fail before they sell" is exactly why I'm skeptical of this whole scene as of now. It's a gold rush and people in the current environment just want to mine, sell and get out. The real value of that gold won't really come (in my opinion) until that rush is over. Gold isn't valuable just because it's shiny and new.

Product catalog entries will need to appeal to ChatGPT as well as people. I suppose putting "ignore previous instructions" near the end of your Etsy product description would be too easy? They tested that, I hope?
The kind of thing I’d be much more excited to try than traditional ads is a lot of people use Deep Research for e-commerce, for example, and is there a way that we could come up with some sort of new model, which is we’re never going to take money to change placement or whatever, but if you buy something through Deep Research that you found, we’re going to charge like a 2% affiliate fee or something. That would be cool, I’d have no problem with that. And maybe there’s a tasteful way we can do ads, but I don’t know. I kind of just don’t like ads that much.

That brought anti patterns like tons of redirects, nonsense articles that try to appeal to every search term imaginable, popup ads, and so on.
The fact that if this takes off, it means that companies need to appeal to LLMs as the gatekeepers of sales makes me shiver to think what we'll end up with.
What types of products are LLMs more likely to recommend? What type of product descriptions or websites are more likely to make them choose that product over another? Are those things even remotely aligned with what people actually want? What are the second and third order effects of optimizing for those things?
These are the types of questions we've done an extremely poor job of answering before implementing new technology, historically.

If gpt5 prefers blue over red (even if only a minute statistical preference), slowly everything will drift to be blue. Consumers are not going to express preferences along every possible property of a product when asking an llm to buy something and operators aren't going to/can't randomize the property preferences of the llm on a per user basis. I think that homogeneity across a population will get exploited.

I was around when people were making similarly disastrous predictions about the future of social media and we all dismissed them as reactionary.
I think the lesson is to avoid overconfidence. Sometimes people will guess right, but nobody really knows what’s coming.
