Seems to be a funny coincidence that the Republicans are just now deciding to look into Google's business practices right after Trump was criticizing the search algorithms.

Funny? Try hilarious. That said, I think a investigation into Google is long overdue. They've been in too dominant a position for too long, and it isn't as easily solved as "just use a different search engine".

They dominate web advertising. They've all but taken over email. A substantial percentage of websites run Google Analytics, tracking viewers across the web. Most ads not served by Facebook seem to come from Google. SEO is basically the art of manipulating Google's search algorithms to get your site listed higher on applicable SERPs. If Google+ had taken off, they'd dominate social. It's almost as if Google has colonized the web and reorganized it to serve its ends.

I don't know about you, but I find this extremely problematic. I'm even thinking of adding the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header to my website's .htaccess and setting it to block Google.

Absolutely true. I'm glad it's happening but I just hope it's not twisted to have an overall negative impact on the freedom of the internet. I've been trying to "degoogle" myself for the past couple of years because I've been increasingly uncomfortable with them. I used to be such a Google fangirl ever since Gmail Beta but they are becoming way too far reaching.

It was easy to root for Google when they were the underdog. That hasn't been the case for at least a decade. While they started as a search engine, I think it's fair to say that if you've got a pie that talks to the internet, then Google has their finger in it.

While everything you said is true, they're not a monopoly on any of those things. And perhaps I'm ignorant, but I've not heard one whiff of unfair trade practices. They dominate because they're the best at what they do, not because competitors don't exist.

I'm curious what specifically anyone would be investigating.

If you haven't heard anything, it's because you haven't been listening. Search for "google antitrust" or "google unfair trade practices" and you'll find news about it. Heck, even google it.

I have moved to using a lot of emojis and explicit identifiers in my text communications just because things can be misconstrued so easily. I even do so at work, which may look unprofessional but I've found has been a good way to make intentions understood (and so reduce unneeded conflict).

Stories like this one on digitized old books cut both ways, but it does hopefully at least add some color here.

The latest of the two EU-issued antitrust fines mentioned in the article relates to Google using their market share dominance on smart phones to strengthen the dominance of their search engine. Different countries have different definitions of unfair trade practices, and the European Union ruled that this was a breach of their laws.

Republicans have been anti-Google for as long as I can remember.
