I'm sure we're in for an amusing time when youtube's algorithms start whacking tons of content that isn't related to white supremacy.

I don't think it takes a successful angel investor to see how they'll end up in a PR nightmare that will eventually hurt their company valuations if they end up being filthhub.

Related: spez and Senator Ron Wyden did an AMA on /r/politics yesterday, specifically related to CDA 230, which is the section of the law that both allows sites to host content without being liable, as well as enables them to be able to take it down if they want.

It didn't go well (unsurprisingly, I have no idea who thought that was a good plan), but there was a fair amount related to reddit hosting this type of content.

Spez is probably going to be seeing that quote from Senator Wyden a lot over the next few months, I imagine.

From what I am told, The_Donald is home to messages that cross the line toward inciting the hatred that is eroding our democracy and it would be good to see Mr. Huffman and Reddit to do more work to moderate such behavior.

Can anyone tell if this is as huge as it sounds or just Youtube doing PR damage control with no real impact on overall content?

it's unclear so far, since this is fresh off the presses. we'll see how it develops as they roll it out in the next few days and weeks but at minimum, a lot of conspiracy theory stuff (sandy hook, 9/11) seems like it will be getting axed and probably some of the more bigoted channels or far-right channels will be getting axed too. what the dividing line will be is also uncertain.

this is probably not going to take down very many american conservative/alt-right/far-right channels, but it is likely to cause a huge scramble in them because this is a big step toward putting people in that group who don't get taken out in this sweep on the cliff-edge the next time this happens. don't be shocked if you see a bunch of people start taking steps toward alternative media or one of the smaller services that already hosts youtubers of the sort blowing up.

I wanted for a viable alternative to YouTube as a competitive service for some time, so I guess this one is my monkey paw if GabTube becomes a thing.

I have a theory (or rather: desperate hope) that mainstream access is part of the appeal for a lot of these people. "This is normal now" is a powerful message. If youtube removes it, laws are passed to prevent it (not gonna happen in the US, but look at Europe) and subscriber numbers fall, that's no longer a claim that works.

I suppose it strongly depends on what you dislike about youtube that makes you hope for a competitor. But indeed, one full exclusively on people youtube decided to ban would probably be pretty rough.

well, for a time there was already a relatively "viable" contender for the title of where these people would go in stream.me, but researching it, it looks like it went down for good about 3 months ago after the owners were threatened and doxed, so lol. a good bet for where these people might congregate if they get shoved off youtube is wherever ethan ralph and mister metokur end up, though, since they're pretty popular with the lot and have large audiences that would be desirable to such a platform.
