Man, Twitter really doesn't want me to just use it the way I want to use it: Follow accounts, turn off seeing those accounts' retweets where necessary, and only ever view Newest Tweets First.

I don't use lists, bookmarks, direct messages, or explore. I don't want Twitter to guess what I'm interested in. And I don't plan on getting my news from Twitter (though I do follow reporters who break stories I then read elsewhere).

Also this all feels a bit tone-deaf considering my biggest complaint with them is their lack of action on addressing frequent EULA-offenders and not doing anything to combat misinformation campaigns. IIRC they did even less than Facebook about that doctored Pelosi video.

I'm a similar use-case to you, and Tweetdeck has basically solved those issues for me.

I have my notifications column to the far left, to move the real content toward the center. I then have a 'Highlights' column, which shows me a curated list of the users I don't want to miss content from, including their retweets. 'Home' is the third column - it's just everyone I follow with all retweets turned off, that way I can skip most of the dead memes, 'literally me' gifs, and political takes. Fourth column shows me my own account's tweets - helps remind me to post some content if it's been a while.

The redesign is fine but it seems like it's just a lick of paint. Without the ability to toggle off retweets, Twitter seems unusable (or at least a time sink of trash) for anyone following more than a few hundred active accounts.

I've never heard anyone ever speak fondly of a non-chronological timeline on any site.

I try to use Mastodon where I can.

You should try realtwitter.com. it's a redirect to the type of feed you seem to want. If you want a specific account you can do eg. https://realtwitter.com/Adys

Every time I create an account to just read and follow the account gets blocked because of "suspicious activity" I guess not spamming out rage tweets is suspicious.

On your third point, seeing things in "Newest Tweets first", I've blocked the following words:

      • suggest_ranked_organic_tweet
      • suggest_recycled_tweet_inline
      • suggest_activity_tweet
      • suggest_pyle_tweet

This has made Twitter feel a lot less like a timesink, since it stops showing me "new" content, and I can more easily decide when to stop.

For lessening retweets, I've blocked "RT if", and that's helped with the most annoying types of RT.

I've been using it for a little over a month now. Really dig the new design.

Design is good but I despise how it constantly resets your "show most recent tweets first" setting. It gives you the setting but resets it on purpose every few days. Such an awful "we know better"...

Yeah, this setting defaulting back is infuriating.

I'm not a big fan of the Trends on Twitter/Who to Follow, but luckily with uBlock Origin I can easily zap them with a right click.

No, if only they'd kick nazis off of their platform, rather than protecting them. But that would require work. And, they couldn't blog about it.

As well as profiting off them. Important to remember selling ads to fascists is profitable for this company.

Why are interface redesigns always forced upon users? An opt-in/out system would be nice.

Will the new, refreshing and updated experience also include less awfulness?
