Unfortunately since we're still in stay at home mode, even I have a hard time convincing myself to buy a new phone right now whose main feature is portability.

Something not touched on in Gruber's review is that the iPhone 12 now rejects all replacement parts (even 1st-party ones) that aren't directly installed by Apple or Apple associates.

Unlike in the past, if you plan to buy an iPhone this time around, you'll be fully committing to paying Apple's price and any price increases for repairs and services.

(but man, hardware-wise, they sure are the best option for pocket-sized phones.)

It's worth noting for clarity's sake that an iPhone won't reject a replacement battery, i.e. it'll still work, but it will indicate the battery is non-genuine in the battery screen in the Settings app, and you won't get other battery metrics like health or device usage.

I understand wanting to not allow third-party replacements for the TouchID sensor and FaceID array, given those have security implications, but the cameras are a bit much.

And for double-clarity's sake, it'll still indicate the battery is non-genuine even if it is a 1st-party battery taken from another iPhone. The camera, too, technically "works", but it's low-res, disables zooming and panoramas, and is generally unstable.

Yep! Forgot to mention that—if you want the battery to appear "genuine" it has to be serviced by an AASP or at an Apple Store.

I still intend on dying with my SE1, however, it really is nice to see Apple sticking with smaller devices. For us SE/5S form-factor fans, there's been a bit of existential dread for the inevitable purchase of a new phone. The last round of new devices from Apple were underwhelming, but it looks like they more than made up for it. I really hope they stick with this 'put the larger phone's specs in the smaller form-factor' trend.

I'm still riding this one out, however.

I'm a very light mobile user. I pretty much only play Ordinary Puzzles and ‎Simon Tatham's Puzzles, listen to podcasts, music, and clear my mod queue... almost all administrative things beyond checking calendars and phone calls are done on a proper system. As I said, very light. Because of this, I've never wanted a large phone.

I want something that can slide into my pocket or fit easily into a fanny pack (a cool leather one... not a dorky one) -- and it really feels like Apple is looking out for us.

It's a shame to see the lack of third-party repair options, but we'll have to see the full extent of that. I recently had my battery replaced, and the SE feels like brand new. I'm also not ready to give up the beauty that is checkra1n and the overall jb scene, regardless of how ugly everybody thinks my homescreen is :)

Some might argue the leather one is the dorky one, pal. Mine’s guatemalan.

I’m surprised they ever went out of style. Especially in the age of devices, you’d have to be crazy not to join our elite club :)

You know what would be cool? An external wireless module of the pro max camera ththat could pair with the mini.

It depends on what your priorities are. What the Mini has over the SE is

      • Flagship/best-in-market camera

      • Much better, brighter screen

      • Face ID (although that's debateably a con given our mask wearing times, but I suspect over the life of the phone more time will be spent without masks than with)

      • "5G" longevity (useless now, but maybe in 5 years 5G will be ubiquitous and necessary)

In terms of performance, the SE still has the a13, the a14 is only 10-20% faster, you're not going to notice it.

Basically, apart from photos, the mini doesn't really do "phone" things any better. It will probably have the same support lifespan, the battery is a wash, and so forth. But it is a much nicer object to hold, and use, and if you take pictures, it's much better at taking pictures.

Really I want a bigger phone as well, but the mini is honestly more than I really want to spend on a phone anyways.

I'm also really pissed off that they're charging and extra $30 for an unlocked version of the 12 mini. That's definitely not a positive.
