In my view, Yahoo Answers is their only product that has lasted so long in internet memory. I still see memes about questions so dumb they make you wonder if you live in a scripted reality. I doubt this was Yahoo's intention, and I am not sure if Answers brought them any actual profits, but no other site/app on internet can provide what Answers did. Answers is Yahoo's unintentional magnum opus.

Quora's a good successor for the intended function of Yahoo Answers. But sadly not a worthy comedic successor! Fortunately there's enough stupidity on twitter, tumblr, facebook, and reddit to generate memes for decades.

Also it's a shame that they're canning the archives as well. Presumably there are some decent (or comedic like "how is babby formed?") answers on there that would be worth archiving in a read-only format.

I really hope digital hoarders step up to the task of memorializing this wacky piece of internet history. I agree with you that there truly is an abundance of stupidity that's reminiscent of Yahoo Answers, but none of it really strikes me with the same authenticity and shock. That's probably because Answers came first, and everything else just feels like a copy. Whatever it is, I really hope Answers is preserved.

Wasn’t Yahoo the birthplace of Ken M?

What a shame. Yahoo Answers got me through AP Physics. It appears the Archive.org team and volunteers are working on backing it up: https://tracker.archiveteam.org/yahooanswers2/

I hadn't heard of archiveteam before so I went to the website to check them out and was treated to an old but relevant quote on their homepage.

"[Yahoo!] found the way to destroy the most massive amount of history in the shortest amount of time with absolutely no recourse"

Internet Atrocity! GeoCities' Demise Erases Web History
By Dan Fletcher, TIME Magazine, Monday, Nov. 09, 2009

It seems like Yahoo! fits the bill for a serial killer at this point.

Just as a reminder, Yahoo is owned by Verizon. So it's basically evil all the way up and down.

What's the deal with the short notice? This seems to be a trend. Are companies actively opposed to archiving, even when it cost them no money?

People hate on Google for shutting down their projects (and rightfully so) but my god Yahoo has been totally useless in terms of their hostile behavior

To be clear I don't really care too much about Y Answers (not to at all mock the people who do, that's totally legitimate), it's mostly Groups shutting down that pisses me off (let alone Geocities)

Well, that's because Yahoo has basically been dying a long slow death for the last 10+ years. I'm actually surprised any part of it survives with the Yahoo branding anymore. Are there still people who see the Yahoo name and don't think of complete and utter failure? Why does it even still exist?

For what its worth, I know people who still use Yahoo mail. I can count them in one hand, but they exist.
