Topics and comments can now be bookmarked (aka "saved")
As mentioned last week, I've now deployed the bookmarking functionality that was primarily implemented as an open-source contribution by @what.
There's not much to say about it, it should be pretty straightforward: there are "Bookmark" buttons on both comments and topics, and you can view your bookmarked posts through the Bookmarks page, which is linked through your user page's sidebar. I'm planning to add the ability to search your bookmarks eventually, but I don't think that'll be urgent for a while until people start building up a pretty large list of bookmarked items.
Please let me know if you notice any issues with it, and thanks again to @what for the contribution!
Woo, thanks @what, it's an awesome addition,
Nice!
Two bug reports:
Wait. How is the second one a bug?
Maybe they are indicating it should say this?
Yup, this exactly. It's a small thing.
Oh. Alright that makes sense.
Maybe he thinks it should say "comments" instead of "posts"?
First, thanks for the great, demanded feature.
As one of the uses of the feature is “read later,” how do I un-bookmark?
OK now I see it, for
Bookmark
changes toBookmarked
when pressed and toUnbookmark
after reloading. It would be nice to be eventually able to unbookmark from the Bookmarks page.
Maybe on the user's Bookmarked page the button should be
Unbookmark
(the page shows Bookmarked items after all)I don't know if it's just me, but the bookmarking position feels... off on posts. It doesn't seem consistent with the comments' Bookmark option. Great feature though!
I think if and when more actions are added to posts, it will probably feel a bit less strange – at the moment it's kind of just floating there.
That definitely makes a difference. For me, I have all of these buttons on this post now:
So it certainly doesn't look out of place for me, but for people that don't have any permissions I can see how it would.
This is a great feature, thanks @what. The only thing I'd like to ask for is an easy to find "unbookmark" button in the bookmarks page.
Are there plans for bookmark categories (folders, groups, etc.) similar to save categories on Reddit?
(I would say that this function should be basic rather than premium on Tildes.)
I am not aware of any plans for adding categorization but I don't see why it couldn't be included eventually. Added a "suggestion" issue for it to Gitlab:
https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/issues/313
And AFAIK there also aren't any concrete plans for adding "premium" features on Tildes, although if something is unfeasible to provide to everyone (i.e. due to technical limitations), but a subset of users is willing to pay for access to it, I don't necessarily see an inherent problem with having that option available on the site. Deimos did work on Reddit Gold for quite a while so I am sure he probably has some good ideas for implementing a similar (but better!) system on Tildes eventually. ;)
I've noticed that bookmarks are displayed according to the order in which I save them, rather than the order in which they were posted. I had somehow assumed that the oldest item I've bookmarked would be displayed first (at the bottom of the list), and the newest item would be displayed last (at the top of the list). Instead, they're displayed in the order that I saved them.
This isn't wrong or bad, by any means - it's just unexpected.
But it leads to the idea that maybe we should have a sorting mechanism for bookmarked items, to choose whether to display them in the order they were posted or the order they were saved (and maybe there are some other sorting options that could be included).
Thanks, added an issue for the ability to change sorting of the bookmark lists: https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/issues/342
I bookmark this :)
Maybe "Bookmarked" should be differently colored from the rest of the text ?
It would also be nice to be able to unbookmark by re-clicking it.
Seems as though you can unbookmark on a page refresh.
You can unbookmark comments by clicking it again, it would be nice if topics behaved the same way.
