While not a native, but I’m currently living and sweating in Singapore. I’ve sent out a few invites to other Singaporeans I know, so there should be at least a few here.

No idea if he cricket club is still there....we've been bleeding expats for a few years so it's probably changed a little too even if still around.

Hmmmmm, looks like it could well be. Might've moved to a different street, but the food and crockery look familiar. I used to love the chicken, bean curd, egg and noodle laksa with a tall glass of iced calamsi juice. If you're ever around that area(-ish), there's a great place still going called Ah Lung Curry (but according to TripAdvisor, there may have been a family split and two places now using that name as a result). You'll need a packet of tissues for that one. Also, in Kowloon city, there's an Islamic food place which does fantastic beef cakes with juicy gravy - mind your eyes for projectile damage, though!
I grew up in HK through the 90s and 00s, but had to leave in 2007. The UK was...quite different. The next decade or so was a time of melancholy, bitterness and depression, but I've been recovering for a while now. Biggest regret is probably not learning more Cantonese, but I was quite directionless and thought those years would last a lot longer.
I'm sorry you had to leave if you weren't quite ready yet. What I love about south east Asia is the diversity in language and how easy going folks seem to be, switching so rapidly depending on context. :) There's going to be even more people who have some Cantonese links but don't quite speak or understand it.
Were you able to find a good community in the UK and food south east Asian food?
No, in the 16 years since I left, I've had virtually no contact with anyone from the old country and haven't made any friends in the UK except work colleagues, who I'd class more as acquaintances. The few people I'd describe as friends are ones from other countries who I speak to online.
Even though I've come a long way since my school days, I don't really feel like I have a lot in common with the Brits and wouldn't really call either place my home now.
. It's very hard making new friends as an adult, and your being kind of unrooted probably didn't help

Question for y'all :) I've never been to ASEAN before, but if I get to go one day, what do you suggest is a good itinerary?
Where do I start first, what are the must-see's, what's a good detour off the beaten path, where's best to wind down and catch my breath, and finally, how do I end the trip with a bang?
Yikes- thats a difficult question because the region is so huge and diverse. You could devote an entire trip to any one country (except Singapore where you need maybe four days, five max).

No sir - not that talented. I mostly lurked on r/singapore trying to navigate through the covert (and sometimes overt) mild xenophobia on display there.
(Not saying all of it, not saying everyone, but this is just my perception overall: irl SG folks have almost always been lovely.)
Yeah I had many long arguments about privilege and casual racism there before I gave up.
