It's also fueling intolerance because people need enough for themselves before they start caring for others. Desperate people tend to try to get what they need from other people.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with you. As an autistic person modern digital advertising is overstimulating. What's more, in my country (Singapore), Youtube's adverts consist of, I would say, 70% scams read in annoying voices or misleading content. (The other 30% come from big companies with their general flashy bright colors and dumb earworm jingles that are simple enraging distraction.) It doesn't seem like Youtube is willing to address it at all either.

Like it or not, Youtube has become too big a dispensary of information for nobody to be able to avoid it. I cannot just, even though I want to, avoid using Youtube without being at a massive information inconvinence. I should not be forced to pay a company just because of my disability. I don't have that money, either.

If ads are annoying for neurotypicals imagine just how bad it is if your senses are wired up even more strongly to detect small details. I can't stand one more second of "Did you know you could make money just by posting online" read by the worst person on earth. So unfortunately, Youtube is unavoidable, and adblockers are the only way I can stay sane browsing it and indeed anywhere online. Do not roadblock or paywall people's access to crucial information.

What can be done, though? I have no clue. I wish they'd make Youtube into a non-profit but so many people make money off of it. Someone has to suffer at the end of the day but I will say the current state of Youtube advertising is unacceptable still.

It really feels like there's a shortage of content on there now. I'm subscribed to a great variety of subreddits but there's barely any interesting content on there. What a shame that one of the best websites to actually hear from other human beings (as opposed to just celebrities and famous people) has turned into this.

You know, your point about not reading the manual made me think about how dismayal people's literacy usually are. Perhaps that's why they can't use technology with a UI beyond simple symbols - reading is simply hard for a lot of people. They want to look at images and watch videos, not read content.

Dialog's documentation is quite good! I'd consider it on par with Inform's in terms of coverage. It has a great deal of examples and there's a reference for most standard library functions.

I worked on a fluid library for Dialog once: https://intfiction.org/t/wip-working-on-a-fluid-library/49296. I think a fluid library really shows how Dialog's rule-based system shines and how flexible the language is to model a game world.

Community wise, it's rather small (Inform is still more popular), but I'd consider it workable enough. There's a subforum on Intfiction with some active members if you need any help.

Additionally, another great thing about Dialog is that there is a default REPL-like interface (dgdebug) where you can test your game without needing to compile it entirely, with live reload when your source files change. It's really great.

I really like Dialog (https://linusakesson.net/dialog) for creating Interactive Fiction games. It has an easy syntax and makes a lot of sense. If Plain English is better for you, you can also try Inform 7. It's a natural language programming way to create interactive fiction, but I found it much, much harder than Dialog because of how free-form natural language is. It's kind of hard to make Inform do anything at times. I much prefer Dialog's limited syntax.

Since then I've also realised different species of durian have different tastes. I probably won't recommend one of the bitter species to a beginner, haha. Get one of the sweet ones.

I feel like an organisation which guided designers to the right places and got them started contributing would be useful.

My concern is that there are fewer designers who would volunteer for free than developers. I thought of a fund because I think it would motivate, or at least motivate by employing, more designers to contribute to FOSS, since that I feel that there might be a shortage of free design talent.

I'm mainly thinking of Musescore's employment of Tantacrul here. It'd be nice to see more projects get help like that.

I feel that we need to appeal to UI/UX designers to help contribute to FOSS and respect their contributions.
Sure, sometimes UI/UX designers make things "too clean" and the program loses it's "charm". That's something that should be avoided. But I think that, if a respectful designer with an eye for flaws and illogical design is on the team to help identify problems of improvement, it will be a great benefit to any FOSS program.

I wonder if a fund should be set up that would employ and send UI/UX designers on attachments to FOSS projects. Would that be practical at all? I wonder how plausible it is to convince designers to do volunteer work - thus the fund idea. And a fund could promote the idea of designers contributing to FOSS and how they can do it in a way that is constructive and helpful to the project.

I'm of the opinion that the fediverse will help in this regard. I get the value of a isolated individual community but also see the value of having all information easily accessible in one place. One problem with isolated communities is that they all have their individual cultures, making it harder to get started participating. It's expected that you ease into the culture if you want to stay there long term, and that takes effort and encourages lurking. On a centralised website like Reddit there's a "common ground" which everyone even in a new subreddit is familiar and comfortable with. The fediverse allows the creation of individual communities, each on their own website, but also retains the connection and "common ground" between each individual community, making it easier to ease into other communities. So I think it might help.

I'm a zoomer, and I know it's kind of heretic to be positive about a commercial tech product, but Discord has been fulfilling that role for me. Social media has a lot of downsides, but I hope the ability for it to be a positive driver by allowing connections between people who might never meet IRL will continue forever. It also makes opposition and alternatives to the absurd over-commercialisation of platforms that should be enabling this more important.
