Can you recommend me some Android games to play on my flight?
I'm getting on a 5 hour flight later today. I've got my Android phone (S22 Ultra) and cheap Android tablet (Lenovo P11 G2) with me. What are some of your favourite games you'd recommend to pass the time?
Because I'll be on a plane they'll have to playable without an internet connection. I also don't have any controllers with me, so would prefer games with decent touch controls. I'm open to any genre, but I particularly like RPGs. Thank you in advance!
Stardew Valley is a gold standard offline game. Works great on mobile.
Another recommendation would be an emulator, you could play any number of older games (GBA, PSX, DS especially) so then things like Pokémon, Final Fantasy and the like become options.
emulators are great for rom hacks too! before I travel I like to see what new hacks people have cooked up for gen 3 Pokemon games. guaranteed hours of things to do
Agreed. Pokemon Emerald Rogue is one of the best examples of a rom hack being able to distract you for hours.
And that's what I love about romhacks - I've never heard of this, so it's like having a surprise sequel to a game I played as a kid, released almost 20 years later. Thanks for the link!
I can't recommend Slay the Spire enough. It's a roguelike deck building game that is easy to start and stop in the middle of runs. There a multiple playable characters that have different card sets available to them with different mechanics. The android port is pretty good and the touch controls generally work well since touch targets are large enough.
Dicey Dungeons is in a similar vein, and also has a very good Android port.
"this app isn't available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android"
How strange. It says that on the play store? I'm on Android 13 and can download and play it.
I have a pixel 7, which they locked 32bit processing.
I can only do 64 bit apps unless I root and unlock it
It's a dumb move, avoid pixel 7
Oh that really sucks. I'll leave a review on the app about it. Coming from someone not too informed about android development I would think it wouldn't be too much effort to compile a 32 vs a 64 bit app
it's such a great game, agreed.
Can't go wrong with Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Rougelike with god-tier touchscreen controls.
This is one of the most challenging games I have ever played. The feeling of victory having won it a few times was incredible. Def would be great on a 5 hour flight
First comment on Tildes, so first I want to say: Hi to everyone.
Antiyoy is a great strategy game I wasted many hours on. It's author yiotro also has plenty of interesting and kinda unique games avaible.
Polytopia, mobile knock off of civilization is also fun.
Here are some that I enjoy:
DATA WING is a free (no ads or microtransactions) puzzle action game that has a surprisingly compelling story. It’s rather short, but it’s quite good and there aren’t many like it on mobile AFAIK.
Just make sure that you have tissues on hand for the ending. ;~;
For people on iOS, it’s also on the Apple App Store.
That game is shockingly good for free, no connection required, and no ads.
Thank you for the suggestion, this was such a fun game, really love how I can thrust against walls to propel, but when you said it was short I really didn't realize how short lol, I think I've finished the whole game...? I really wish there more
Vampire Survivors and 20 Minutes Til Dawn. If they get their teeth in you, you'll lose the whole flight, and you can pay for ad-free for like $6 for both. They're similar, but different enough that they're equally entertaining in different ways.
I was surprised by how addictive vampire survivors got for me during the flight
It's not a game, but if you like puzzles, Simon Tatham's Puzzles. I had to take it off my home screen because I'd be up until 6 am in bed playing the map one. You can fell into a rhythm with some of them that's borderline meditative.
Dicey dungeons is a fun little turn based rogue like dice rpg game.
Max Payne is available on Android, but unless you have a controller it's really only playable on Easy.
If you are more into bullet hell type of games, I really like Soul Knight from ChillyRoom
Endless Sky's android port, a F/OSS space trading game. Great way to pass time during a commute.
I've spent way too much time on Bloons TD 5, Vampire Survivors, Death Road To Canada, Crazy Taxi, Fruit Ninja (the classic paid version with no ads), Plants Vs Zombies (the original), Subway Surfers (with network access disabled so no ads) and Game Dev Tycoon. Definitely gonna highlight Death Road To Canada and Game Dev Tycoon, though.
Papers, Please is a great game and an awesome example of how to make a port from PC to mobile.
My go to is gameboy advance emulator. I use Pizza Boy but there may be better ones. I like to replay old Fire Emblem.
Chiki's Chase
The port of Sonic Triple Trouble for Android was just released, if that's something that would grab your attention. https://gamejolt.com/games/sonictripletrouble16bit/322794
80 Days is playable offline, you might try that on your tablet. It's a little cumbersome on a phone because there's a lot of reading. You're on your way around the world with your employer, who is attempting to win a wager that he can do so in 80 Days. It's not a new story, but I love the gameplay loop - you can take any number of routes, and where you go has a huge impact on your game (finances, health, connections to places that might get you on your way). Highly recommend.
20 minutes til dawn is a great bullet hell game.
If you're into games like Factorio, ReFactory is a lot of fun but I do recommend using the tablet for that one, the extra screen real estate really helps.
Both Phoenix Wright and Layton Mystery Journey work if you launch the game with internet and then disconnect. It won't boot you out unless you fully close the game and relaunch it, but leaving it open in background in fine.
Kingdom New Lands is amazing and highly recommend, but it eats your battery
Enjoy your flight and I hope you have fun!
If you like racing games, and specifically have a love of retro racing games, I cannot recommend highly enough Horizon Chase. It is a beautiful love letter to Outrun and that era of games, challenging without being overly frustrating, and there are no microtransactions or anything to progress. You buy the game once, and you have the whole thing (I think it may even be available on Play Pass now). It is one of the first games I ever bought on Android, and is still within my top 3.
