There's something really refreshing about that. Alternate: 11 requests | 3.0 KB transferred | Finish: 0.199s | DOMContentLoaded: 101 ms

Why not both? :P There is easily enough room underneath the address bar in the ad for the netstats too. The more concise geeky internet stuff in the ad the better IMO. Anyone else got more...

The big accomplishment will be if it remains this way once there are 10x the number of features that exist now.

The majority of the bloat comes from all the tracking and analytics that other sites have going on under the hood... that and poor coding practices combined with poorly scaling, outdated, backend tech or flashy, new, untested tech. All of which they compensate for by spinning up more AWS instances rather than addressing the underlying performance issues but that doesn't help their users much if the DOM package is bloated to hell as a result.

Reddit is especially bad for all that since their old code is an absolute mess, the redesign is using the untested and potentially fundamentally flawed tech like React & Redux and they log, track and analyze everything, even outbound clicks for "personalization" (i.e. selling your habits to advertisers so they can better profile and target you). Which is only made ever worse by so many users also having to rely on 3rd party extensions for adding necessary functionality to the site like RES and Mod Toolbox.

I also trust in @deimos to keep the overhead minimal. It's in his best interest, after all, since he isn't relying on a CDN of Cloud Computing service so can't just spin up more instances or easily crank up the available bandwidth to compensate, and all expenses (including dedicated server rental) are currently out of pocket. He has already vowed to keep as much JS off the site as possible while still maintaining functionality and isn't going to use any bloated solutions (e.g. AJAX pagination) or untested tech typically used elsewhere these days. He wants to use "simple, reliable, boring technology". Hell, he isn't even planning on using cookies for much besides basic site functionality, unlike most other sites.

See his Technical Goals for more.

It's so fucking fast and snappy! I love it! The opposite of the reddit redesign, in pretty much every way I cared.

There's some sort of deep cosmic irony in advertising the lack of advertising (presumably on competitor sites, that subsist on advertising $'s)

Now @deimos just needs to add a condition where a lone ~ with spaces to either side is replace by a simplified logo in the comments or even just some custom formatting to it to make it stand out. E.g.

          <a href="https://tildes.net" style="font-family:coolfont; color:coolcolor;"> ~ </a>

Ironic; Tildes could save everyone else from ads, but had no way of advertising this fact to others.

Buying ad space for ~ on other social media sites as a donation. Evangelizing on other social media platforms. Pressuring tech journalists through social media (e.g. twitter) to write a story about it. And most importantly by inviting other amazing people to join us once we get invite codes.
