Allow users to set their own comments to default collapsed?

Sometimes I comment and I'm low effort and jokey or a thread develops that ends up unnecessary... And now we have a whole in joke (sorry Kat, I started it & you earned it!).

Anyway, perhaps it would be nice to add an option to set your own posts to default collapsed? We might also want an option to hide all collapsed in topic? Or do these features just encourage low effort fluff and I should just learn better self control?

Edit> OK This obviously isn't clear:
I was suggesting an option to set one of your comments & it's chain to collapsed for all other users by default.

I just labeled myself with a green label so I know it's mine.

I think they forgot to mention that it's a Tildes Extended feature.

Someone linked a Tildes Extended extension that adds a plus button that does this.

I was more thinking to let users default collapse whole chains they spawned if they don't think it adds much.

I tend to agree -- I assumed this was the general sentiment of most Tildes users. Not too long ago, there was a discussion thread on Tildes regarding the recent reddit databreach. Several Tildes...

A little frustrating that it would be necessary to be really honest. This isn't meant to be Reddit, we shouldn't have these long chains of nothingness forming. They remind me of the pun threads, or the "ol' reddit switcharoo".

Several Tildes users expressed irritation at how the announcement thread on reddit had devolved into an endless stream of jokes and off-topic commentary.

On the other hand, I imagine most users agree that a forum entirely devoid of personal interactions and casual pleasantries would make for a pretty sterile environment.

      The Compromise

In my mind, jokes and off-topic comments should certainly not be unconditionally, 100%, "on-pain-of-death" forbidden (not that you were suggesting they should be!). The occasional joke or 'thanks!' is nice to see and an important part of forum culture.

But I don't think it's too much to ask that people make an effort to also include on-topic commentary in their 'low-effort' posts.

Edit: here are some links to other discussions which touch on low-effort and joke content.

Is the Tildes section model compatible with injokes and microcultures?

At some point someone will get control over other peoples UI through the reputation system. Maybe useful to have a soft intro to start testing when and how it can work? It's basically HN downvote...

Maybe useful to have a soft intro to start testing when and how it can work? It's basically HN downvote but you can only downvote yourself.

Definitely partly devils advocating here though, not sure if we shouldn't just expect a higher bar.
