Open comments and links with a single click

I browse my front page on Tildes, and I see an item I'm interested in. I also notice that it has comments. I think "I'd like to read that article, and then look at the discussion about it."

To open the link and read the article is one click, on the title. Then, after I've read the article, I have to go back to my front page, find the item again, and click on 'X comments'. This doesn't work if I'm scrolling through the front page and selecting a few items to read later.

Alternatively, I can click on 'X comments' for each item, and then go to each post's comments page and click on the URL to read the article.

Either way, it's two clicks and a bit of extra navigation.

Could there be a way to click on an item and open the article and the comments page simultaneously?

This is how I imagine browsing would work.

Have the front page open, find link, do a middle click to open in new tab, in that tab site opens to comments then then auto directs to the article. In that new tab I have a back history with the comments section, so when I'm done reading the article I hit back to look at the comments. Clicking back/forward moves from the article to the comments and vis versa.

I'm not even sure it's possible and it's probably poorly explained.

I don't know if it's a RES feature or not but Reddit has this feature "[l+c]" which does exactly that. https://i.imgur.com/fq2aL1L.png

Hold down the control (command for apple) key and click the title then the comments. The article and comments will open up in separate browser tabs. Once you have opened all the articles you wish to read, hit control (command) W and it will close out the tab you are on, and navigate you to the first new tab. Might be different depending on your browser/OS.

However, I was hoping for an in-site feature to do this, rather than an off-site workaround. Hence the suggestion.

I thought browsing the web on a phone was only something the younger folks did. You are too hip for me, my man.

The equivalent would be long-press the link and then open in new tap, but it's not as smooth as ctrl-click.

I've been here while each of those settings was added, and I read all the announcements as they were made, and, as far as I know, this particular option was never added. I've double-checked, and I still can't find it.

So, in case I missed something (someone did recently remind me about an option I'd forgotten!), which option allows me to open the linked article and the comments page simultaneously with a single click?

It's all good. Like I said, I was reminded recently that I've forgotten one option. We're none of us perfect!

I wish articles just opened in a new tab by default. The number of times I've clicked an article and then closed it only to realize I also closed out of my tab that had Tildes is kind of obscene.

Go to settings, you can set Tildes to open certain links (topics; text topics/comments; external links) in new tab.

I think you've just hit the actual answer! It's admittedly still two clicks, but not in a way that'll take you out of the front page flow or mix up the tab order.

This seems like a job for Tildes Extended.

As I said elsewhere, I'm hoping for an in-site feature to do this, rather than an off-site workaround.

Pre-open comment pages first, then use them to open an actual link, read it, close it. If it's worthy of commenting - comment as you right back there, on the comment page. Close the comment page, move to the next one. Rinse and repeat. Works for every reddit/hn/tildes-like site.

I use this Chrome extension to solve this problem on reddit. I typically view the external website first, and if I decide I want to read the reddit comments I click the bar at the top of the page created by the extension. This is also nice because I can open a lot of tabs at once and still have quick access to the reddit discussion. The idea to open both the external link and the comments page would be slightly less convenient for me, because I would have double the # of tabs open if I open a bunch of submissions ahead of time (instead of browsing one-by-one).

Hubski does this, if anyone want to try out what it would be like if implemented. I quite like it personally.
