That's funny, I bookmarked a very similar website a few years ago! If you're interested: https://geodienst.github.io/lighthousemap

obviously vibe coded, but very cool visualization I imagine based on real data. Quite fond of the last line that mentions that their beams are true size.

IMO it's the subtitles. Stuff like "Every charted on the planet, on its real cycle". In fact, I am 90% sure this user specifically used Codex, and not Claude, too. Not a knock. I've seen it myself...

Not a knock. I've seen it myself quite often. I had Codex write a dashboard/control panel for my self hosted setup and it added stuff like "The power of change, at your fingertips" all over the place like it was writing royal hieroglyphics on a phairohs tomb

It's also the styling, font choices, “card” based designs, borders, uppercase on labels, etc. Individually this isn't a problem, and while the design style all together looks rather cool, sleek, and “futuristic” it's the default design and output mode. I also concur that this looks similar to Codex projects, Claude is very similar but has less focus on saturated colors and rounding.

Once you start noticing it, it's really hard to stop seeing it.

Edit: this is his AI stance on his website, which also show earlier projects from last year that look like the more primitive style that was popular at the time:

Since then I've been making peace with LLMs, learning how to use them to create knowledge while holding on to my scientific passion for truth.

I'm not anti-AI, but I am anti-BS. I'm genuinely impressed by what companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have been able to accomplish by scaling up transformer models, but I don't believe next token prediction will take us all the way to artificial general intelligence.

Edit 2: he posts a lot on both AI and AI design subreddits, while spamming random data visualizations across different subreddits.

Huh, TIL there are lighthouses inland too. Great globe! I kind of want a real globe that's just a round screen that lets you cast digital globes onto it.

My guess is that "lighthouse" might be a bit of a stretch for many of these here, and a lot of the inland ones are more "a small light so no one runs into the end of the dock".

...i zoomed in close to follow the course i crossed the gulf twenty-five years ago and recognised a lot of smaller navigation buoys, enough to confirm that they're not all lighthouses even though...

...i'm also confident that the sweeping beams don't accurately represent visibility distance nor beam focus; they're strictly symbolic...

I didn't think there'd be that many. Though maybe the glow effect is hiding the sparsity a bit.
