Intentionally vague minor spoilers for S1 The only thing I would add is the emphasis on world building through demonstration of local culture — see, for instance, the role of the bells on Ferrix that repeatedly pops up throughout the series. Particularly in the face of imperialism (contrast how few show up at the rites of the Aldahni after a decade of Imperial rule to a funeral on Ferrix).

I think he captured it very with “Andor is a sci-if spy thriller that happens to be a Star Wars show”. It showed a level of commitment to portraying what the actual universe might look like under Imperial rule that makes it easily the best Star Wars show I’ve ever seen.

Production-related info, but with possible spoilers The fact that so few turned up to the rites on Aldahni was actually a direct consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic. The writers and showrunners wanted hundreds, or possibly thousands of extras, but due to the restrictions surrounding numbers of people in gatherings, they could only legally have a much smaller group on set. So the little story nugget about the Empire eroding the Aldahni culture over the years was thought up to explain why they couldn't have the kind of large-scale set they wanted, and honestly I think that adversity aided the overall story they were trying to tell.

On top of all that the thing that clinched it for me was that they were finally brave enough to do a Star Wars series without bringing in lightsabers or force users. I've longed for stories from this universe that didn't orbit well within the influence of the Skywalkers and Palpatines.

A friend of mine ended up binge watching it and also says it was the best star wars TV show they'd seen. So even though I had thought 'never again' after forcing myself to get through the Mandolorian, I might just have to watch it!

It's amazing. I'm a Star Wars fan so I'm biased, but it's also much more complex and meaningful than the Mandolorian ever could be. I thought I was done with Star Wars after The Rise of Skywalker, but damn, Star Wars is political (again).

I also recommend a podcast called A More Civilized Age. Originally a show where four folks watch Clone Wars and talk about it, they temporarily switched to weekly episodes about Andor, and listening to their episodes after watching Andor adds a lot to the experience (imo). For someone like me who can't get enough of Andor, it's great!
