TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Recently finished Barry on HBO (written and acted by Bill Hader) and it was one of my favorite shows of all time. The amount of action, comedy and character development in each ~30 minute episode is unbelievable. Highly, highly recommend giving it a try if the sometimes extreme level of violence isn’t a non-starter. The series is now concluded with 4 seasons of 8 episodes each so not a long watch.
NoHo Hank is one of the greatest comedy characters ever created, IMO. And the actor's interview with People a few years ago is also well worth a read for fans of him and the show:
'Barry' 's Anthony Carrigan Was Told to Quit Acting, 'You're Not Attractive Anymore' Because of Alopecia
For anyone who likes Barry (especially before it gets darker in later seasons) I highly, HIGHLY recommend Patriot (and by extension Perpetual Grace Ltd, which is another show by the same writers).
It's hard to describe exactly, the closest I can get is to say it's a dramedy about a Jason Bourne type character who suffers from PTSD and clinical depression. One of the closest things to a 10/10 show I've seen in a while. It's available on Amazon prime I believe.
Foundation Season 2 trailer (July 14)
For weekly shows,
Strange New Worlds starts up on Thursday again, which is exciting.
Next Week:
Not too bad... but in two Thursdays, WARRIOR is back! So is Jack Ryan, but WARRIOR!! I really like the show and I hope it has a good home with MAX.
I'm pretty tired of Marvel, but I'm hype about Secret Invasion. Samuel L Jackson is one of those famous people I'd love to enjoy a meal with.
I'm not big into Marvel stuff, but yeah -- you can't deny Samuel L. Jackson. Also, the rest of the cast is killer -- so I'm hoping the material holds up.
Now --- give us a proper X-Men series and I'm all in.
I should confess Marvel still tempts me, and it's still a lot of fun. I'll likely continue to consume it, I'd just like them to pump the brakes a tad.
after the big Thanos gig was up, I wish they had taken some time off. Even bad Marvel stuff is still typically pretty good (not always.)
So very much looking forward to The Bear's Season 2 starting up. What a great show that's been so far.
its insane, right? Its far better than it has any business being. Nice to see Ayo Edebiri in Black Mirror, too. I hope she gets a lot of work.
My wife and I just finished Severance. What an incredible show, really hoping season 2 comes soon. The first 2 episodes were a bit slow but it's definitely worth it to stick it out.
I'm hyped to find out that Superman & Lois is renewed for a Season 4. This season has been so beautifully written, and it could have flopped hard with cliche writing. They managed to make it hit hard emotionally while dealing with a grounded story.
For a CW show, I've been impressed with how they've handled the characters. It's a superhero show that recognizes that some of us folks want to see what it would be like to see these characters especially when they're not saving the world.
For instance, I adored the first 45 minutes of Man of Steel. They really nailed Clark Kent. Once the fighting started, it was just another big budget film.
Disclaimer, none of these are brand new.
Midnight Diner is a Japanese slice of life show about a cook and his customers that I just love. Some of what I appreciate is the photography of food and some of it is the low key stories. The Diner itself feels like a character, like the bar in Cheers. I am sad that I finished the series. I always looked forward to watching.
Kim's convenience and Derry Girls are comedy shows that are just fun and creative. Kim's Convenience is set in Canada and Derry Girls in Ireland. Both are highly original with fantastic characterization and good stories.
Just stumbled on this thread. I love Midnight Diner! It's like if a TV show was a comfort food.
I caught up with Silo. Incredible show based on the book series. After I finish an episode I'm dying to watch the next one to find out what happens next. Lots of mystery, conspiracy. Solid plot, characters and overall just well made.
Synopsis:
In a ruined and toxic future, a community exists in a giant underground silo that plunges hundreds of stories deep; there, people live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them.
I'm hooked enough that I need to read the books.
What We Do In The Shadows season 5 trailer, premieres July 13
Rewatched the first two episodes of the new season of It's Always Philly and its growing on me. I didn't hate them before but didn't love them either. Now, I'm starting to like it a bit more. I definitely think having the show's creators go through each episode they made and reflect on them really helped shape the new season. The most recent seasons were a bit weak. I'm pretty excited for what the remainder of the season will look like.
Just finished watching Slip. It's a drama/ comedy about a woman who ends up slipping into different dimensions every time she has sex. It definitely had it's moments and its depictions of relationships felt very real and grounded (so much so that my partner had to stop watching in the first episode because the relationship between the main character and her husband felt too much like a depressing foreboding of our future, so I ended up watching the rest of the series alone). Overall though I felt like there was something missing and
spoilers incoming
the resolution of her going back to her original husband felt like it left a lot of things unresolved. It's a pattern I've seen in a few different shows recently where the answer to relationship issues seems to be that the grass is never greener and you should be happy with what you have. Which is fair enough in theory but when there isn't any discussion of how things are going to be different the second time around, feels like a bit of a cop out.
