TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Fargo season 5 is amazing. Juno has acted so well, I didn't like her that much in Ted Lasso but she shines as Mrs. Lyon.
(Minor Spoilers ahead) I loved the allegory of Lyon and Tiger (does that make Dot a Liger?) And I'm digging the girl power in the most recent episode -- moreso because it has happened organically rather than forced (which a lot of recent media can be blamed for) and because they highlight each character's strength so well.
Got stuck somewhere after Season 2, only recently found out a fifth season is ongoing! Probably going to pick it up again.
Season two might be my favorite season of any show ever. Season three and four have some fun parts, especially as they tie the story/characters to the other seasons, but overall they are not really worth it, in my opinion. I've only watched the first two episodes of season five, but so far it is back to the level it was in season one. I can't wait to see how they connect it to the other seasons/movie.
she also crushed it in The Offer
I have been watching low effort stuff on Amazon in preparation for the Adpocalypse of Jan 29. So far that had been Reacher, whose main value is watching the good guy do all the things you wish you could do but don't be a use violence is not a long term solution. The other has been Vox Machina, which is literally a cartoon based on a D&D campaign, so you can see the story elements cant in a way that's sightly different than a normally scripted show, but it is good fun.
I really enjoyed the first season of Reacher, apart from the leveled bosses Vs good guys at the end.
Season 2, I'm not sold on. The acting seems a bit off. It's scripted in a way that seems awkward.
I just finished it, and I read a review that summed it up better than I could:
Here is the full review it has spoilers for the finale.
That paragraph is the perfect summation to me, though I would also add that I have rarely seen such a gulf between a first and second season. I still thought Ritchson is the perfect Reacher, but as said above, this season was not it. It was bad.
I've been forcing my partner to watch The Wire since she had never seen it. My goodness. This is about the fourth or fifth time I've watched the series and it never ceases to impress me. One thing I've noticed on this rewatch is how subtly funny the show is. It's not like Succession which borders on being a comedy half the time, but there are plenty of tension-breaking comedic moments. I've also come to realize, thanks to my partner looking down at her phone more often than I'd like, that every episode is filled with silent communication that completely alters the meaning of the dialogue.
Since my last rewatch I've gone through Better Call Saul, Barry, and Succession, all of which made me reconsider The Wire in my all-time TV rankings. But after going through the first four seasons again, The Wire is still at the top for me. The show is 20 years old, but it still holds up incredibly well (save for some funny technology stuff).
[Minor spoilers below]
Season three probably ages the worst, given some of the Hamsterdam-esque containment strategies that have been employed in major cities like San Francisco. Still, the show is as depressingly relevant as ever and is a must watch for anyone who hasn't seen it.
my favorite season changes with each rewatch (around 9 or 10 now.) Dukie going down that little alley will never get easier.
I saw Beef.
I haven't watched a TV show in a while, the last thing I finished was Marvelous Mrs. Maisel last year, and before that I hadn't really watched anything either.
Beef sweeping the Globes, Critic's Choice, and the Emmy's basically got to me.
I thought it was good. It's entertaining, binge-worthy. I don't think it's to the level of Mare of Easttown or The Queen's Gambit to compare it to other limited series's. But I see why it became so popular. None of the other nominees in the category really caught my attention. Maybe Daisy Jones and the Six but I'm not super into what I've seen from it.
I think Yeun is a strong actor. I think Wong, who I haven't seen act outside of Always Be My Maybe, does really good here. She has a surprising amount of emotional depth to her performance.
Edit: Also I just checked at the last time I posted in one of these threads was June of last year lol. I have not yet finished Succession. I also started Only Murder season 3 back then and didn't even finish the first episode. I don't know why I lost the appetite to watch tv shows.
That looks pretty fun. Thanks for mentioning it.
Watched 3-4 episodes of Fool Me Once before giving up and realizing it's not worth the effort.
Started back up BoJack Horseman from the beginning and I'm blown away how good that show is. Again. Looking beyond the amazing dialog and emotional matureness of the show I just can't get over the silliness of all the animals casually just being there. I love that premise because it's just an endless ocean of humorous possibilities. There's something about completely silly and out of place things just being ignored that will always be funny to me. Probably why I like spoofs so much.
I love Bojack. (The show, not necessarily the character).
Another animated show that combines the serious with the silly is Aggretsuko, but Bojack is a work of genius
Monsieur Spade started and its... alright. It's got a similar tone to The Knick and Perry Mason, which is good... but the story itself would have benefited from a second episode being released.
Its a beautiful show -- and honestly, I could watch it for that alone.
I watched the pilot of Walker. It started off promising, apart from the constant background music. When it got to the gun and weird karate style kick, I noped straight out. I was hoping for a Yellowstone style show, I was left disappointed.
I've moved on to Night Agent which Netflix has been sticking in my face for ages and I finally caved to watch. It's okay. A low FBI guy rescues a super important witness, and then pursues the investigation he shouldn't be looking into. It's quite the guessing game for who the baddy is.
