TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
A brand new season of Game Changer started yesterday and it was one of the best episodes I've ever seen. It is a sort of continuation of the previous episode with Jacob, Vic and Lou though so watch last seasons first if you want full context.
That is one of my favourite episodes.
minor spoiler re: the theme of the episode
I really enjoy the homage episodes, and having them do an homage to one of my other favourite shows (Taskmaster) was awesome. I love how unhinged Vic is becoming; they are wildly unpredictable. The throwbacks to Sam Says 3 were also great. I'm going to have to rewatch SS3 right into this one at some point as a double feature.
I'm watching SS3 and this episode again tomorrow with my partner because agreed all around. Vic is unhinged but so was everyone and we can never ever trust anything isn't secretly Game Changer now
Seems interesting. Each episode is one continuous take? Damn.
Well said, thanks for the recommendation.
Yup and a legit oners as well with no hidden cuts. You can see the breakdown of how it was performed here. I recommend watching this after you finish the show because it does spoil quite a bit.
But yes, highly highly recommend this. I could go on all day about how staggering this show was but I think it's best to just watch it as it's only 4 hrs in total.
Just watched the first episode and goddamn you were right. 10/10 holy crap felt super real. So much suspense and slow buildup and then the interview just blew me away. Also great acting by everyone involved.
The first and third episodes are incredible where the single take really draws you in. I've read some complaints here on Tildes that it's not an added benefit, and the points are valid, but I tend to disagree. For me, it felt like it forced you to stay in the scenes creating this powerful tension.
A couple of the shots are mechanically amazing and the amount of rehearsal required is probably off the charts.
Just a little bit of trivia, the third episode was wrapped on the first take.
Yeah I also saw the criticisms that people had about the cinematography being a bit over-the-top and unnecessary. And I disagree as well. I loved it! I love those sorts of long shots that make you really feel like you're there.
Funny enough, recently I've been watching Peaky Blinders as well as Severance, and both of those feature some great long shots (Peaky Blinders has some great intro scenes where you follow a character as they walk around town or something, or some action/fight scenes that are one long take, and then Severance too has some amazing long shots through winding maze-like corridors that make you feel like you're trapped in there with the characters).
So to see an entire hour-long episode like that was incredible! On the one hand, I would have preferred to not have known about it, so it could surprise me when I started watching. But on the other hand, I might not have started watching it if I didn't know about the single-shot cinematography. Really impressive in my eyes. Looking forward to probably watching the last two episodes later today.
100%. In an interview between the main actors of episode three, one of them mentions how he appreciates that they had to do it all in one take because, as actors, they got to stay in the moment and feel/react to the emotion of the scene. I think the audience feels that in the climax of episode 3.
Sure there's some of it that's just a technical/cinematography flex but 9 times out of 10, it kept me engaged and I felt far more present and observant than with shows with cuts.
Very good tv show. Amazing as a technical achievement. I don't know how they got some of the shots. At one point a kid jumps out of an open window and runs away and the camera seamlessly follows him through the closed window next to it.
If I had to summarize the show it would be: holy shit I am glad that social media wasn't around when I was a kid.
Yea, I've had a lot of conversations with some friends and we agree that because of our upbringing and the environment we grew up in, we'd be pretty susceptible to the toxic bullshit that spreads through social media. Like the irony of growing up in this period is that our parents went from "don't trust what you see on the internet" to "i saw it on facebook" within 15 years.
As for the shots, definitely watch this after you finish the series to see how they did theses shots. It's really quite remarkable the amount of planning required to pull this all off in one take.
Adolescence blew me away - beyond, just the technical achievement. The topic was interesting and the acting was spectacular. Episode 3 and the final really truly blew me away with the human emotion. Plan on checking out White Lotus at some point as everyone seems to be talking about it.
Excited to get to Side Quest as I love Mythic Quest.
To Be Hero X continues the series's trend of being barely discussed in the west while having some of the most stunning visuals of the season. It not only has a superficially similar aesthetic to Arcane and Nimona, but even the animation quality is between the two.
Of minor note is that, unlike the first two seasons, you won't see this one discussed in many anime communities as it's not anime (Emon – Haoliners's Japanese subsidiary – is no longer involved).
Well you've definitely got my attention; I loved those two!
Is it still airing or has it finished? Will definitely check it out later when I can, thanks!
First episode aired Saturday (Crunchyroll), 24 episodes planned.
I mean that is a fair point, but I'd expect it to at least be known among people who were fans of the first two seasons – and yet none of the people I know who've watched the other two even knew this was announced, maybe because of said horrible naming convention and/or a huge lack of advertising. While the seasons are (strictly speaking) not related to each other and are more of an anthology of thematically very similar series, they're basically throwing away name recognition every time with these different titles.
Even Crunchyroll has them listed under completely independent series, which is awful for informing people who've subscribed for future updates.
Finished Kaos and it was pretty good! Fun and interesting both, sad it was cancelled. 7/10
Almost done with The Recruit season 2. Basically more of the same as season 1. Some weak moments but overall solid spy show. Wild that it has been over two years since season 1 for this type of show though. I had forgotten everything and had to watch a 10 minute recap video.. anyway, season 2 is 7/10
The Simpsons wasnt so bad this week --- but they're really late to the game (as always) with an Ozempic episode.
White Lotus was awesome. No notes.
edit: The Pitt wrapped up the season and was great. They packed a lot into this one hell-shift, but its expected.
Just finished season one of The Day of the Jackal and it was great. Will be going back to watch the movie. Just starting The Pitt which is a hospital drama akin to ER but is supposed to be outstanding - sounds like a great background show.
I've been watching The Wheel of Time as it releases. Is anyone else here watching? I should say that I'm a huge fan of the books and have read them multiple times, and I'm becoming wildly impressed with how they are doing this turning of the Wheel on the show. Since leaving reddit I don't really have an outlet for discussing what I'm enjoying about it.
BIG Spoilers for Episode 7
Loial son of Arent son of Halan your name sings in my ears. I was astonished that they killed him. I was watching it happen and even as it was happening, I was thinking "oh wow, he's going to kill so many Trollocs when he breaks the pathway and they fall." Then he started falling and I had a "how is he going to get out of this," moment and then he fucking died.
Overall I like that I am familiar with the big story beats that are likely to happen, but also that because this is a different turning of the Wheel, things are different. I know that the online trend is to mostly hate changes to beloved materials, so in some ways I quite enjoy the fact that there's an in-universe reason for things to have diverged from the books. I think that most of the changes have been in service of making a better television show, which is pretty smart.
But crap, Loial DIED. That's nuts.
