In case the title makes anyone think Nathan Fillion will be on Game Changer, that's not what this is announcing - an episode of The Rookie will take place at Dropout on the Game Changer set, featuring Sam Reich, Vic Michaelis, Jacob Wysocki, and Zac Oyama (Edit: and Anna Garcia!).

Sounds fun and will undoubtedly be a lot of publicity for Dropout. I'm a little surprised Dropout wants to be associated with a police show, though? Maybe it's different nowadays, but the early episodes of The Rookie that I've seen definitely gave me a "copaganda" vibe.

The copaganda of the Rookie has been thoroughly discussed by the showmakers and after 2020 went through quite a bit of change to tone it down. They were struggling on how to make a cop show glorifying police with public police brutality going on in real life.

One of the actors even left the show citing difficulties reconciling his skin colour and copaganda.

It's impossible to make likeable and competent characters and not fly in the face of real life problems with the police, but they try. Some characters have been introduced with strong opinions about police reform and an ongoing theme is how the District Attorney's office is key to making justice reform in tandem.

This all has created a sort of "lefty" progressive police show that's aware of their role. It also turned the show into less of a "beat cop" show and more of an over the top "international sting operation" show but that's neither here nor there.

All of this has nothing to do with Dropout, but I can see how they'd align themselves with the Rookie without shooting themselves in the foot politically speaking.

I could kinda see it becoming a an internet albatross for the fan base that Dropout and their talent crossed over with a show that portrays cops who try and do good, which of course is incorrect and wrong, and are worried that they’re losing touch with their parasocial besties and/or never really knew them after all. But internet be like that sometimes.

On the other hand, if this is for a Game Changer bit for “who can sneak the highest profile Dropout cameo into another show” and the entries are the loopdeloop in Heated Rivalry and Ponies, and then a full blown crossover event with a prime time network show, I think this would clinch it.

Can't please everyone. I don't think internet albatrii are worth any consideration as long as you think you're doing the right thing. There will always be someone that disagrees.

When it comes to a collaboration like this they may alienate the hardline acab people, but perhaps they think aligning themselves with a show like this shows a progressive opinion on modern policing.

Either way, you say albatross, I say albatross.

Whatever the case, it'll increase their footprint and their ability to send a message.

To dig this one up again, that was the gist of the conversation Sam had in the Superfan Q&A. The crossover was good networking and exposure for the network and The Rookie folks were great to work with and massive fans of the platform, but he's open to communication/getting lit up on socials about how he can improve going forward. I think there's a bit of a tension between Dropout the comedy platform, and Dropout the leftist lifestyle brand, and both sides are a little more aware of the other now. Maybe more will happen once the show airs.

Thanks, I haven't paid much attention since dropping it after the first few episodes so I didn't know that it's more self-aware now. That's good to hear.

Its justified by the show as necessary due to the danger of the job, but it didn't make it anymore fun to watch people being assholes to eachother the whole time with one nice comment in the last 2 minutes

Completely understandable. They start off pretty rough and there are some questionable relationships that they thankfully kill off and bury rather quickly. Seriously, the relationship is never even mentioned in later seasons.

Plenty of procedural shows like these need some time to settle and while it's not a fantastic show, it does do character growth rather well and it hinges entirely on those likeable characters.

I view The Rookie as spiritually connected to Sam Vimes's Watch (not the show, fuck that show).

It avoids most of the tropes of CSI et. al. where cops are infallible and anything they do is justified to get the "bad guy". The first season is rougher, like most are. Among other things the show drops the romance angle between Fillion and his significantly younger co-star after the first season. Like Brooklyn 99 they did some concentrated reworking after BLM.

And Fillion and the rest of the cast are fun.

Knowing nothing about the Rookie characters or setting, that sure was an episode of television I just watched.

I’m at sort of a mix of opinion where the episode was mid enough that I really don’t think it’s worth getting mad about online, but if Dropout is upsetting the apple cart on a vocal bit of their fandom for the exposure to the Network Television Audience, I think they could have gotten more than an E plot with a few minutes of awkward patter and a lineup gag that Brooklyn 99 already did circles around. Sell your souls for retail, guys.

I'd say if anyone else is thinking about checking this out, and is a dropout fan and not a big tv watcher, just skip this. Or fast forward to the parts with the dropout folks, but know they're playing heightened (almost cartoonish) versions of improv comedy people.

Not great... could be worse, I guess?

I can’t speak for the cast, but I’ll speak for myself and say that the opportunity to expose Dropout to a big audience – one that’s probably not already familiar with us – felt too good to pass up. We owe everything to our fans, who are super passionate and hold us to a high standard, so it’s perhaps inevitable that we upset folks sometimes.

It’s not Sam disavowing the LAPD, falling on his sword and passing Dropout to Brennan to establish as a full cooperative, so it’s going to upset some people. But “I made my decision, and sometimes you piss people off” isn’t going to appease the folks who bought a “cops are an invading army” T-shirt and want to refund their Superfan subscriptions. I don’t think Dropout is going to do the apology tour, the socials are eventually going to settle down, and a number of people won’t renew, but it’s a lot of shit to give on either side over five minutes of mid banter on a network TV show.

How is there not a supercut of just the dropout parts of this episode yet? From what everyone is saying the episode isn't worth watching if you aren't a fan of the show already, so if you just want to see the dropout parts, I expected someone would have cut together those scenes by now.
