I know very little about Dropout's other content, but after watching this and the other freely released episodes of Very Important People (Tommy Shriggly, Hayes Steele, Princess Emily) I am strongly tempted to subscribe to it purely for this show. Vic Michaelis is absolutely hilarious to me, as are the costumes they put these other comedians in, and I really want to watch the rest of the episodes! However, I feel like VIP probably might not be quite enough to justify me subscribing on its own? So can anyone who actually is subbed to Dropout let me know if it is worth it, and maybe recommend some other content of theirs for me to check out before I commit to subbing?

Your link made me realize I've actually seen a few clips from that show before but just never knew what it was from nor had I watched a full episode of it. The episode you linked to was absolutely hilarious though, so thanks for sharing it! The "I'm very excited to show you my dish... it is, unfortunately, my right hand" caused me to snort water out of my nose! And a bunch of the other improv bits hard me genuinely laughing out loud as well. The 2nd then 1st place air guitar performances, pro model couples tutorial "the slouch", Q-Anon and WWE Santa. So many great moments. It definitely has a Whose Line is it Anyway vibe to it, which I love. :P

p.s. Thanks for the other replies and recommendations, @smiles134, @moocow1452, @WrathOfTheHydra, @Crespyl. All those shows sounded pretty interesting/funny too so I watched clips from a bunch of them, and they were enticing enough that afterwards I decided to subscribe so I can check them out in full as well. :)

Always glad to help trick new members into the cult. 😈 (Glad to hear you enjoyed what you saw, and hope you enjoy everything else too!)

Also highly recommend Game Changer, which is a bit more varied, but still excellent!

I subbed to Dropout after exhausting all their Dimension 20 content that's free on YouTube (I think like 4 full campaigns and 2 shorter campaigns). I don't play D&D (though I love CRPGs) so I didn't think this stuff was for me until I saw some random clips on social media.

Since subscribing I started watching Game Changer and Make Some Noise as well which are both great. I haven't even dipped my toes into VIP yet.

Game Changer is an improv game show where each episode is a different game that the players learn on the fly. (Usually) they have no idea what the rules are until they're rewarded or penalized based on what they do during their turn.

Make Some Noise is a spin off of a Game Changer episode that's more or less Whose Line is it Anyway where the players act out a scene based on a prompt. Lots of impressions and funny improv.

They also recently acquired Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared; both the original shorts and the full length series. They're publishing the series one episode a week, IIRC. DHMIS is a different vibe to the rest of their content, but if you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out the shorts. Very unnerving creepy/comedy sketches based on a kind of childrens TV show.

Game Changer, Make Some Noise, Dimension 20 are all the staples, people are going to talk those up.

Some of the great second stringers include Smartypants, a TED Talk PowerPoint Party hosted by Rekha Shankar where a topic is brought to the attention of the rest of the Smartypants Society. Lots of fun, Vic actually presents in the first episode about the non-existence of vegetables.

Additionally, Parlor Room is a feature about various board games, hosted by Becca Scott. Vic is in a couple episodes and picks Cash and Guns for their game.

My hidden gem of content is Play it by Ear, which Vic is not in, but has Zach Reino and Jess McKenna improvise a musical from a series of prompts given by host Mano Agapion, and it's incredible to watch them work. (Vic does show up once or twice on Jess and Zach's podcast, Off Book, but that's not dropout exclusive)

Dropout does let you search by talent if you want to follow someone around, and they have some interesting stuff in the vault, including the Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared show that was previously only available in the UK, and just recently they put up a 24/7 live channel if you want them to do the browsing for you and just see what's on. A whole lot of good stuff IMO.

I think there's only a couple episodes of Play it by Ear that I enjoyed more than the Game Changer episode. There's only two seasons, and it's worth watching if you enjoy that niche. I didn't dislike any episodes, but there's definitely a few weaker episodes.

Zach and Jess also have a musical improv podcast that I haven't listened to yet, but it's supposed to be quite good as well.

Dropout does let you search by talent

After all the replies, including yours, piqued my interest even more I decided to sub. But I'm assuming you can only do the search by talent if you subscribe to them via their own website, rather than through YouTube, right? If so, that definitely makes me lean more towards subbing via their site instead of YouTube.

KK. Thanks for the info. I generally prefer YouTube, especially since I have Premium, but I'm not married to it so I'll likely sub via the Dropout site.

      In short: I absolutely recommend.

At length: The service definitely appeals to a certain crowd, so the kind of vibe that works for me may not necassarily work for you. That being said, the shows can be summed up mainly in 4 categories (5 really, but I'll explain later), for which I will recommend my tastes:

Scripted Panel Shows: Game Changer is the poster child of the entire streaming service and was nominated along side VIP for awards last year for good reason. I'm not a trivia guy, but you learn sooo much obscure knowledge from Um, Actually!, Dropout's derpy step cousin to Jeopardy!

Improv Shows: There's a fair amount of spin-off shows from Game Changer that are fun. Make Some Noise has managed to lose sight of it's original vision, but the most recent season has genuinely had me cry from laughter enough times that I can forgive it.

Tabletop Shows: If you have my attention span (see: goldfish), Dropout has started to build up a great catelogue of TTRPG shows that go for maybe 4-6 episodes with simpler systems (I personally kinda hate D&D, but other systems are actually fun). Mentopolis is a great Osmosis Jones-spired noir thriller featuring Hank Green and Freddie Wong (among others), and then Never Stop Blowing Up is Brennan (the DM) essentially yes-anding everything the dorks around the table throw at him.

Stand Up Shows: They don't have a ton of hosted stand up shows, but the ones they do have are pretty good. Brennan and Izzy's Get Your Act Together was a lot of fun, and Hank Green's Pissing Out Cancer is pretty great (though technically released for free on youtube now).

The 5th Category I sort of lump together as 'College Humor'. They have a lot of their old sketches on there as well as some shows both old and new. Total Forgiveness and Ultra-Mechatron Team Go! are a couple of the bigger shows from that area. They're not currently a tentpole of the streaming service, but they're entertaining in their own right.

Final note: Political Leanings - The entirety of the Dropout content is going to lean left politically. This means all of the standup hosted on the platform, the casting decisions for the shows, and the overall space is going to lean in the inclusivity-minded, capitalism-bad branded kind of way. This is worn on the streamer's sleeve, but even though a lot of people won't be caught off guard by that, the crass humor could definitely lure people in that aren't ready for that kind of environment. Sam Reich (CEO) and others have even had commentary about how this can be a bit of a detriment as it can pidgeon-hole them into a strict lane of content lest upset their audience that has a very parasocial relationship with them (Which literally just happened with their crossover episode with The Rookie and other outreach projects.)

The lightning bit from this was great! That's a dangerous amount of power to give Jeremy Culhane haha.
