Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Two comic series I love are The Umbrella Academy and Locke and Key. TV adaptations of both are on Netflix right now, so I'm a happy clam.
Just finished Umbrella Academy, and loved it. Just finished episode 1 of Locke & Key and like it so far.
Umbrella Academy was great, and I can't wait for season 2. Locke & Key is one of my favorite comics though, so I am super hesitant to watch the show in case it disappoints me too much. Have you actually read the comics? How does it compare?
Locke and Key, IMO, is a little too CW "teen drama" for me to really get into it, as it doesn't go into the dark and horrifying implications of the keys in season 1 and is more interested in playing out it's teen show genre fare.
Ugh, damn. That's exactly what I was afraid of. :( If that's the case I will probably give it a pass for now until I get desperate for something to watch. :P
I have! I'm only a couple episodes in, but I feel like so far it does a good job of capturing the tone and feel of the comics. I'm really enjoying it so far.
While it's probably hard to tell since you're only a couple episodes in, do you not get the sense it's focusing a bit too much on the teen drama aspect, like @moocow1452 suggested it did? Conflicting reports!!! :P
Regardless, I will probably give it a watch eventually... I am just trying not to get my hopes up too high. LOL
Hard to say. I didn't think so. But then I noticed it after reading that comment. I could have been biased by the comment.
I'm still enjoying it. Yes, it's a little childhood magic / teen drama, but it's a comic / show about children and teens.
Also watching Upload on Amazon Prime, it's alright two episodes in, sort of hits that comfortable medium between the Good Place and Black Mirror that I heard so much about. Kind of odd that Amazon is cranking out show after show about the evils of capitalism, but I guess it is a market, and no one is being inspired to quit Amazon over it.
man, I finished Gangs of London and am almost done with ZeroZeroZero. Both stellar series. Gangs of London does have a lot of gory violence -- so be warned!
Manhunt: Deadly Games is a series about the 1996 Atlanta Olympic bomber, Richard Jewell. There was recently a movie released about this, but I think the series will prove to be good. The first season of Manhunt was following the Unibomber and was really enjoyable.
The Last Dance is following Michael Jordan -- and the footage they have is remarkable. If you like this, definitely check out the ESPN 30-for-30 series, especially if you aren't really into sports. The stories are typically well-crafted and truly draw you in. It's also nice because the 30-for-30s all have different directors, writers, etc, so each one has a different feel.
I'm really enjoying The Last Dance as well. Basketball isn't a big sport here, but of course we've heard of Michael Jordan. It's great to see all this footage and hear these people reflect on how he (and his team) became a legend.
They really lucked out with that footage. If you haven’t already, tuck into the ESPN 30 for 30s. They’re all around this same quality.
Rick and Morty came back with an episode about the characters trying to escape the narrative of being in this season's anthology episode, and I can't tell if a serious exploration of running this show long term, or if it's starting to climb up its own butt, and if that's a bad thing this soon with 60 some episodes left that they are under contract for.
I think it's that the show is self aware, but not self critical, so it kind of has a similar issue to South Park where it's throwing bombs at everyone, but doesn't really look at it's own legacy, and what it means to other people.
I believe that’s something you’re allowed to in the comedy genre.
You can, but if you're that big a part of the cultural zeitgeist to have a schezwan sauce moment, it's somewhat short sighted not to turn your eye on yourself.
I don’t think that is reasonable. I believe the actual impact Rick and Morty has in the world is much smaller than its very vocal fanbase makes it seem. And even when it has an influence, those are mainly inconsequential memes like the one you mentioned. I don’t think the show is either relevant or “intelectual” enough to justify your expectations. It’s just a fun, very inventive, comedy that some people take too seriously.
I just watched the new Seinfeld stand up especial on Netflix. I’m a longtime fan. In the first half he’s visibly insecure and has trouble creating rapport, at least on TV. He’s also much less subtle and elegant, using lots of physical gags that doesn’t work well.
In the second half Jerry is way more comfortable. He gets to the material concerning his current life, and it’s vastly superior, with some of the best jokes I ever heard.
I’d say it’s worth it.
I’m also rewatching Arrested Development. It’s a delightful farce with no commitment to make a point or educate the audience. Something that would hardly happen today when there’s an expectation for creators to take a instance or provide deeper meaning.
Arrested Development is almost fully in the comedy genre, like Seinfeld and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It’s cozy, sometimes heartwarming. I really enjoy that.
And the cast is incredible.
I've been watching the Doctor Who reboot again lately. I had previously watched up until the end of Matt Smith, so I started with the next. The next has had some really good episodes, though he took some getting used to. I just started season 9, though Matt Smith will probably always be my favorite.
It's so weird. It felt like we needed at least one more episode. I really enjoyed this season, though.
To me, it felt like they forgot what Westworld was about. The show turned into Person of Interest. It's a great show too but it's not really Westworld.
The main thing I liked with the first season was that they established rules for the world and within those rules, the story was believable. In this last season, there wasn't really any rules. They just did whatever they wanted. It makes the story less satisfying and the twists feel cheap.
