Plex continues it's metamorphosis from front end to your legally obtained material to service for watching something or other whenever.

Are there any other, more “pure” local streaming apps? I.e., ones that don’t try and offer their own services and just focus on your media.

There's Kodi and I've heard good things about Emby.

Emby stopped being open source a little while ago, and seems to be going for the same business model as Plex. There is an open source fork of the Emby code called Jellyfin that doesn't have any cloud features, although some of their clients aren't in very good shape.

I'll have to check out Emby some more, since I've heard a few people mention it as a possible alternative to Plex over the past year or two.

I'm not in a rush to switch, I just want to have options in case Plex heads in a direction I don't like.

I use jellyfin and it does everything I used plex for. I have no complaints.

There's Jellyfin but I don't think it's mature enough to replace Plex but it might be worth looking at.

Just opened my Plex and the first thing I see is Israel Basketball Super League Playoffs., sounds like I've found my afternoon entertainment.

I don't necessarily hate plex adding various streaming services and ad supported content. But what I don't like is how it appears next to personal content with very little differentiating it. I want a major full separator that shows everyone that this is stuff supplied by plex and this other stuff is supplied by me the server owner.

I do like that I can easily turn it off in settings and it never appears again though. I did this about a year ago and now I don’t get bugged by their “Movies and TV Shows” section anymore.

Yep. I was ready to be super annoyed when their crap first started showing up on my interface, but then realized how easy it is to remove and now I don't really give a crap. I think it's great that they are continuing to innovate and find new ways to keep customers around. Plus the fact that it's still super easy to get to all those features even with them "hidden"

It's under Settings > Account > Online Media Sources. You can disable them from there and they disappear from all of your devices.

I'm seriously tired of Plex not allowing me to change my default home page to NOT show their free crappy streaming service. I just want my media, not theirs. I'm using the Roku Plex app, so perhaps I'm missing the option to disable their free junk, but does anyone know?

I'm in the web interface and I don't see any Settings > Account > Online Media Sources flow. There are two settings I can see, one under the wrench/screwdriver logo on the top right, and one under my account drop down two options further right, but there's nothing for "Online Media Sources" under my account. I don't have Plex premium... perhaps that's the issue?

Now I can watch many more things I don't understand!
