Rest in peace. I grew up watching Jeopardy every night, and have more or less continued to do so. Alex fought longer than anyone could have expected, and kept working all the way through. Maybe that shouldn't be taken as an example for others, but it's commendable, and appreciated by all fans of the program. I don't know anything about the man's personal life or beliefs, but he became an icon of North American pop culture for good reason.
His shoes will be near impossible to fill. The first thing my sister, who doesn't even like the show, said in response to this news was "I hope they don't replace him."

I'm not even american but I watched a lot of Jeopardy last year and it kept me really entertained.
