I'm surprised they ever did this. Google play and Amazon both make you buy movies through their websites instead of the app, so I thought this would be pretty standard. I don't think people would be deterred by having to go to a website instead, and certainly not 30% of potential customers.

I agree with your points here, and as someone who didn't play those eSports games in middle school, I think my parents made the right call. Those live streams, though, were not big then. Do you think an age rating system for streamers might be useful for some parents to decide what their kids can watch? I don't think the 'dynamic content filtering' the article mentioned would ever work, but would that step be helpful? Thanks for your comment, I wondered what the community would think of this piece.

I agree with your points completely, but I wonder how many people do care about the notch. I sometimes feel like the only one who would rather have symmetric bezels (pixel 2 user) than a cutout in the screen. Is there a good way to see how many people care about the notch versus being fine or liking the status symbol?

I think the 3D printed gun is one of the best examples we have of law being years behind technology. It's clear that people shouldn't be able to get guns in a method that circumvents protections and laws in place, but how do we ban a file like this? I really don't have an answer other than doing what we can to ban printing guns for now.

As a side note, I'm a hobby 3D printer, and one of my fears is that 3d printing companies will refuse to print guns (for very good reason) and people will try to make a gun with a desktop printer. I think people will hurt themselves trying to make their guns at home, as desktop printers just aren't nearly as good as the gun industry's machines, and ABS and PLA materials aren't really intended for guns. Maybe this 'free speech' could be thrown out as a danger to oneself and others.

I'm a fan of both the movie and short story. I believe that the differences in story come from the differences in medium. In the short story, the physics example is a good metaphor to convey how the heptapods think differently, but a wordy explanation of a physics concept wouldn't go over well in Hollywood or be very interesting to watch in film. The image of the circle in their langauage is a visual way to convey the idea of knowing the destination to find the path to get there. For heptapods, seeing the future is just a necessary part of navigating the present. That's why the linguist has to remember her future conversation with the Chinese official to survive the present and get there.
To me, the physics and that conversation contribute the same information to the story. Again, the difference between your "what if" from the written form and the film's events is all in the medium. The story spells out in words a way of interpreting the heptapods' different worldview, and the film uses visual metaphors such as circular writing and a deceptive sequencing of shots. I think your perception of the film not having a "what if" question comes down to how we interpret different art forms. Writing can be interpreted, but anything from a character's perspective is already an interpretation. Visual art has to be interpreted from scratch by the viewer. The short story asks "what if?" directly, but the film makes you first ask "what is being questioned?", which will eventually lead to a what if question.
I hope that helps, but thanks for posting this topic. This is one of my favorite stories (in both media) and it was interesting to think about it in a different way.

I had very little history on Reddit. That's just a product of what kind of community Reddit is. I comment here more productively than there because this place is for real discussion while Reddit tends to drown that out. A user with little or no productive history may have just been waiting for a platform. I wouldn't judge someone for being inactive.

I do like sarcasm. I believe the tag is kind of a voting system, where hopefully most of the time it isn't needed, but if it's poorly phrased and unclear, someone tagging it means 'I think this is sarcasm' while a serious tag is a vote in the other direction. As for giving it away, I think comment tags should be at the bottom anyway so readers make their own judgment before seeing what others think.

I think once users tagging comments is implemented, text tags like /s won't be needed. The /s not being used might actually encourage more people to use the tagging feature.

He concluded that the disputed line spoken by Trump was "So I'll pay with cash", but it will be interesting to see if other experts give differing opinions or agree. I personally heard "No, I'll pay with cash" before the tape was sweetened, so I find this interpretation very plausible.

I think deniers and pseudoscience promoters are part of the same issue, but they may be handled differently. There should at least be some way of warning people what they're getting into, as some scams are more convincing than others. I'd like to see something like the opposite of Twitter's verified check mark badge implemented to warn users of questionable content (could range from climate change denial to multi-level marketing, depending on how much the platform cares).

I suggest this for pseudoscience because as much as I despise the work against climate change acknowledgement, it doesn't ring as 'bannable' as holocaust denial does from the perspective of the media sites. Holocaust deniers are obviously wrong to the non-extremists (the platforms' ideal target and the mainstream), but unfortunately, pseudoscience tends to come packaged with more politics attached, and I don't think sites like Facebook would be willing to alienate that much of their userbase, especially with how much money is in political ads. Besides, those people may be encouraged to get their fake science from more radical sources like Infowars or Breitbart. Then again, I don't really think they will take any action, so all this may be a moot point. Money talks more than truth.

Maybe when a title is edited, there could be a tag added to show it was edited? That would account for the only negative aspect I can see in editing titles, which is people editing their title after a debate or discussion hasn't gone their way. The tag could maybe only apply to titles edited 1hr after posting, or it may just be obvious when a title edit was to fix a typo/spelling.
