I wish Biden would step aside for someone young and full of energy to fight the conmen. We need someone to rally up and get behind. it's hard to be excited for sleepy Joe.

I wish them good luck trying to prevent 3d printed parts from getting into criminal hands. I can't imagine a tougher uphill battle.

I wonder how much knowledge has transferred from Battle Bots / robot wars. When can we put lasers on our robot mowers to weed so we don't need to rely on fertilizer?

implementation and full adoption are two separate milestones spaced far apart. make that clear to your boss if they don't understand it. I've fought hard over this before. people want sudden results and that can be jarring for employees. turning their world upside is hard enough. demanding them to walk on their hands on day one is unrealistic.

enforcement is so tied to how easy the solution is to use. I've worked at several manufacturing companies that have had various success levels in file management. the key is making it easier to abide by the rules than go against the grain.

some tips I've seen work well.

build a template folder for the structure you want. try not to make things buried in the tree. you really should only go down 4 folders max. try to keep individual files out of the main hubs (never lvl 1, very rare lvl 2)

automate repeating folder templates creation. We have a folder for every work order number we produce. I made a tool that would add a new numbered folder in the sequence with blank files as placeholders for files that needed to be in there. then you could save as over the blank file. PO 123456 is a blank PDF. when a user prints a file to .PDF from the software, they navigate to the WO folder and overwrite the file. this was making it easier to abide than fight.

set permissions for where people can create folders or save files. this helps with non repetitive folders.
set them by job role or department. accounting staff can create folders in the accounting folder but only them. senior staff can access and maybe save a file but no one else can. mapping these permissions out in a chart really helps the people approving these changes understand.

give people their own stash folder for junk but encourage them to put shared documents in the correct location. rather there than on their local hard drive for when they spill coffee on their laptop.

structure enforcement is very tricky. you don't want to come off as a file Nazi on day one. these guidelines or rules need to be clearly explained and documented. be friendly when someone goofs and explain to them why a file structure needs to be tidy. and document when they goof so when it keeps happening you have ammo to back you for discipline actions.

sorry for long and rambling. I love file structure setup. I've been lucky enough to own the project at several companies now. it's a frustrating puzzle with no clear rules or picture of the finished product.

I'm self taught in AutoHotKey.... I'm the ultimate of lazy so my "coding" skills are: how do I hack together my user inputs to do my job. after 8 years of creating hotkeys, I have a script file I can't live without.

several hotkeys to open custom UIs, conditional scripts if a certain program is open before using alt keys to navigate the menus of an application. Much of my repetitive tasks are now simplified. If I type lmkqc into an email, it changes to "let me know if you have any questions or concerns." (a typical comment to end my emails).
I need to type a Work Order number into several different programs. this number is typed ~8 times in the period of 20 mins and then switches to a new semi random number. I have a hotkey to save a number. then a key to type it, a key to open a file folder with its name, a key to open that work order in a said application. all of these are used constantly so I don't have to devote my human RAM to remembering or writing down a number.
I can also rewrite windows hotkeys to be better. Win+E normally opens a new file folder. Win+E for me scrolls through open file explorer windows. if there isn't a file explorer window open, it will open up the most common folder I use in a new file explorer window. I then made shift+win+e to always create a new file explorer window.

I could nerd about this all day long...

I really want to learn more languages but AHK will always be my heart I'm afraid. my lazy brain is just wired for it.

it's too bad the big bad ISPs went around getting local governments to ban public ISP service. It would be a lot better IMO than giving away a bunch of devices.
