Outside of that, mark the posts as noise if possible. If it persists we'd generally not have much else we can do without specific moderation capabilities other than flagging to Demios if its getting bad. Hopefully it'll never get to that point but all we can do in the mean time is try our best.

That's how I've always approached it when running a community and it worked.
Yeah I think if we want to improve we need collaboration, otherwise we can't truly know if what we're doing is working. Ultimately I can try to be better as a person but I'll never know if what I'm doing or saying is hurtful in some way if that's not made clear to me. You're right about the adversarial nature of the Internet at the moment though so it's definitely a challenge but one that's worth it in my view.
Glad that it's been something to think about though.

As for top 3 anime, it's been a while since I've had time to sit and properly watch any but I'd need to go with Ghost In The Shell: SAC, Mushoku Tensei and Code Geass. Hard picking a top 3 though, so many good ones like Monster, Angel Beats, Ano Hana, Clannad, FMA: Brotherhood and more that are absolutely wonderful so the top 3 could change depending on how I'm feeling.
What's your top 3?

I have a tattoo on my left wrist that serves as a reminder that I should keep living that I got after a particularly bad period of suicidal ideation. That said trigger warnings and hiding from the things that drive me to want to do something foolish aren't going to heal me or anybody else. We need to expose ourselves in safe ways to things that cause a trauma response. One of the ways I'm doing that is by being more vulnerable in my posting in places like Tildes where I feel safe. I have had bad experiences with opening up and being hurt, to the point that IRL I don't really speak to anybody about my feelings for fear of being hurt. By opening up online a bit, it's still a risk but in the worst case I can burn the account and leave if I need to and if all goes well I'll hopefully be more comfortable opening up more IRL. If I avoid it online and IRL I'll never truly heal. Seeing images and discussions around the subject of suicide also concretes the reality of it in my mind, yes its upsetting for me and it reminds me of the times I've considered it but it reminds me how it would only hurt those I care for, how it doesn't fix anything but only makes it worse for the people I love most and how it ultimately would be a shitty thing to do to them, leaving them feeling guilty and missing a piece of them. It can be hard to remember that at times and it often feels like they'd be better off but they wouldn't be. Seeing the topic discussed reminds me of that and that's important even if the topic makes me extremely uncomfortable, in fact I think one of the reasons it's uncomfortable is because it reminds me of that. That I could have made a terrible decision and one that I'd never be able to correct.
Just my 2c as somebody who has their own battle with the black dog.

I'm glad to hear that some of these posts would normally be hidden and it's not that I'm completely out of left field here. I've elaborated a lot in another comment just above on my thoughts on why it's important we maintain a stance of not being an asshole even if the subject of our anger is subjectively being an asshole so I'll not repeat that here but as mentioned in that post, I'll not pretend I myself am perfect in that regard so if you see any posts from me that are straying, please do politely correct me by reply, I would like to know if I am being an asshole so that I can correct myself and learn to be better not only for my own sake but so that I can play my part in maintaining the welcoming atmosphere here and showing that we can all disagree and get things wrong but that how we respond and do better next time is more important than being perfect from the get go.
Thanks for your thoughts on this subject!

I'm glad to see that it's not just me with this thinking here.
It's definitely hard to maintain that kindness to others, especially when we feel attacked or persecuted and I can't say that I never act like an asshole or that on occasion the situation doesn't seem in my mind to warrant it at the time but I think it's definitely something society at large has taken as a basic response to things in recent years which shouldn't be the case and really it doesnt help. I always think back to the fact that when I first started posting online, while I was open minded, I often said things that would get me dogpiled if said today. Hell the word fa**ot was a common use word everywhere online when I joined my first forum at 13 and I sadly participated in that language. I think that probably applies to most of the older members here too if everyoneis honest about it. Using gay as a negative description was also common and poof was a common insult in my area in real life growing up even if we as kids didn't know what it meant. I've never been genuinely homophobic (hell I'm bi and always knew I was curious about other guys even if I didn't accept that and consider myself as bi until recently) but it was the common way to speak as wrong as that is so I did it and all the dogpiles and hate would have done is hurt and scare me to the point I'd have probably retreated to places where people were more accepting of my comments which could have lead to a rabbithole of the wrong kinds of thinking.
I honestly think that's a big cause in the rise of a lot of the right wing, racist, homophobic and anti-trans groups we're seeing today. Somebody uses the wrong language, gets attacked and it reinforces negative stereotypes or creates one in somebody's mind and drives people to seek out groups and communities where they are accepted which just perpetuates the issue.
I'm gonna be trying to take a step back when angry and come back to the situation with fresh eyes later to let me respond better and to assume best intentions from people to do my own part in making the Internet a better place. I've also started "sense checks" with folk I trust who aren't angry to give me insight into whether my response is fair when I'm upset about things, if a 3rd party says that my response is shitty I don't send it.
Given I'm not the only person with this line of thinking though I'll try to reply to posts that I feel are hitting the asshole metric and gently remind of the CoC without being a prick about it, and when I have the ability unlocked I'll mark these as noise if there is no merit to the posts outside of anger/vitriol. I think one of the better things we can do is to remind people as often we might not even realise we're being an asshole, I sometimes don't and if you ever see me post in that fashion I would appreciate a polite reminder so that I can correct myself. Humility and openness to correction is crucial to improving so I'm not gonna sit and pretend my shit don't stink or that I'm some paragon of empathy and kindness but I want to be better so I hope the people here can help me to be better!
Thanks for your thoughts on the subject.

Pip is a package manager and more for when developers build tools/programs to provide additional functions and capabilities like matplotlib which is used for creating charts and you cant really launch it standalone while something like say sonarr is a program built for use by a user so wouldn't distributed by pip.
Without knowing the program in question we can't really offer any specific guidance but if Python and programming isn't your thing you may want to look at docker instead. Docker does have a Windows desktop application you can use and most of the arr programs will have pre configured docker containers you can use. It'd be much simpler to do it that way as a new user and honestly that's what I'd do even as somebody who uses python daily for work.

It's a great philosophy for a community. The question I have is around how that relates to people off site? My take on it and I think I'd be right in saying that this is probably most people's view, is that should also apply to stuff on Tildes that relates to people off site. For example as much as reddit is obviously a hot topic at the minute and a lot of us disagree with the events at the moment and more so with the admin behaviour, I've noticed some particularly critical comments and outwardly hostile ones about certain people. My thinking is that while that's perhaps (most certainly) deserved, we shouldn't really be encouraging or allowing any insults about people or groups whether they are members or not. I think it just makes a bit more of a negative atmosphere all round while contributing to the snipe culture seen at reddit and therefore should be discouraged.
Is this something that's been discussed before? If so is there a consensus on it that was reached? Obviously if the long term members and Demios are okay with it then I'll say no more but if not how would we all feel about the don't be an asshole principal being applied to not only those in our community but also those outside of it?

This creates friction and leads to folk sticking to their "safe" space. Overall the full site should be safe, and moving around should be seamless. When I compare reddit to my time on old forums back in the day, a key difference was that on a forum I knew what was expected no matter what subforum I went to, if I go from selfhosted to askhistorians on reddit, the rules are miles apart. Personally I don't comment in that case but others will and just keep it to low effort low quality posts so as to run less risk in that their post wasn't that important to them so if its removed, its no big deal.
I think that universality of rules and expectations makes interactions easier and so long as low quality posts are discouraged, we can anticipate maintaining a good atmosphere even as the site expands.
Another key thing I think is not having too many subcommunities in general. I love selfhosted tech but at the end of the day it's a niche, subforums should be as broad as possible to organise a site, and it's down to the users to post about their interests in the bigger subforums if that's a topic they like. I don't need to be interested in all elements of tech to post there about selfhosted tech as an example. Much like I don't need to care about the latest shounen anime to post in an anime subforum about the shows I've been watching and my thoughts on that. They both belong there though and we don't need an anime/shounen/top4/animeabc type level of separation.
I used to administrate forums on the rule that your home with the list of subforums should not require scrolling more than once. If it does, I have too many.

The reddit "community" much like most of the Internet in recent years tend to attack first ask never. I remember posting on reddit about how most call centers don't record every call, I thought it was due to the space that would take to store even a year of calls as that was the answer I'd always had and it made sense. I mean even a modest department in a call center can take upwards of 300k calls a month so even a few megabytes per call and that becomes unsustainable to store every one for most businesses. Instead of correcting my maths due to a mistake in the code used, I got called an idiot, told I shouldn't speak and then every mistake was pointed out and berated. I felt so shitty. That was in a legal subreddit, not even an IT one and my posts historically were legal as that's what my role was at the time. Really upset me, I deleted all of my old posts and never commented again in there despite having loved using my knowledge in law (specifically motor insurance claims in the UK) to help folk navigate a complex field and process that really impacts their lives.
I'm excited for a new community here where I can contribute with areas I do know and learn about things I don't. I'm starting with comments for now but also planning to look at the repo and start submitting posts with interesting things I find online.

I'm really excited to be here on Tildes because it really reminds me of the old school forum vibe, especially with how well articulated posts are here. I've really missed that mentality online in the last decade or so.
Bit about me, I'm a 29 year old male, bisexual and have ADHD (probably autism too but never formally tested/diagnosed for that). Just started treatment for ADHD this year but I knew it was a thing for the last 15 years, getting the NHS in the UK to agree was impossible and they refused to test me so had to save and go private which shockingly enough showed I was heavily ADHD.
I work in data analytics, currently learning machine learning to use this in my work, I also do a bit about automation with Python. I'm into homelabbing and selfhosted services, anime, and have an interest in UK law which is a holdover from a previous role. Just wish there was more online legal learning paths as its not something I'd want to do formally so would love to learn self led via something like Udemy. I also like Cyber Security and I'm studying this at university part time around work. Ideally I would like to move to data governance and compliance based roles in the coming years which is a nice mix of legal, data analysis and cyber security but we'll see how life goes. I've had a million hobbies in the past so know a bit about a lotta subjects but not really a master of any.
Anyway that's me, if anybody has any questions, I'm an open book so fire away!

I used to do 4 on and 4 off doing 8am til 8pm, that was delightful. An hour to prep my day, then I had time for calls and meetings during the week but could use the 4 hours after that for my focused workload time. The big downside was with it rotating I had a load of weekends on so missed a lot of meetings as a result. If I could pick my ideal I'd do Monday to Thursday 8am til 8pm and have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off with flexibility to work on a Friday for calls with senior leadership or other areas of the business if needed. My company have been fantastic to work for, I've been promoted a few times in the last 3 years and I get paid well so honestly don't mind giving up some of my own time when genuinely needed. Folk might say that's dumb and if I'm off then I shouldn't work but my mentality has gotten me a lot of success so far and means that my bosses know that if I need something, either time off or if I'm late, it's not an issue cause chances are I've already made that time up 3 times over already.
I think that's what a lot of companies miss out on, if staff feel appreciated and well treated, they'll be willing to go the extra mile for the business and if they then need so.e time or run late, don't make it a huge deal cause the employee goodwill is pretty crucial to business success.

I've got ESXI on it at the minute with a Windows Server 2019 VM for AD and a few other things, Ubuntu server for PiHole which also handles internal DNS resolution to the various services and the plan when I get time is that I'm going to setup *arr services with Deluge in containers for media, though I'll probably run Jellyfin on my laptop pointed at an SMB share to benefit from the 3070 in that for transcoding. I also want to use something like Paperless NGX but have considered Mayan EDMS as an alternative. Longer term I'm also planning a database server to use as a test bench for various data pipeline ideas spitballs and practice as I work as a data analyst and want to improve my skills in engineering and also want to learn ML engineering so I can use these for work. Additionally I'm planning to test out various open source BI tools to see how these compare to the proprietary tool at work so that I can look to get my department the ability to self-serve direct from our data mart without incurring extra costs. If any works well the hope is I can get this setup on the data mart server to give the teams access to use the data in a controlled manner without needing any SQL knowledge.
I'm also going to get a dedicated NAS setup which I plan to build using a case I've seen on AliExpress that can hold up to 15 hotswap 3.5 inch HDDs. OS will be TrueNAS Scale and I'll run Jellyfin on there when complete as I'll use a more modern CPU so it can do the transcoding instead of my laptop.
As far as backups go, I'm considering a tape based backup solution but haven't had any experience with enterprise hardware outside of the R720XD so any feedback on the backup option would be greatly appreciated. As I understand it, tape is the recommended option but open to any alternatives that may be cheaper as a tape writer is pretty pricey from an initial check.
Eh there wasn't a first anime, for me I had seen the art style and loved how it looked. Around age 13 I started looking for more like that and found manga online. Bleach was still in active serialisation and hugely popular so I started reading it on one of the massive manga sites run by a Chinese company, for those of you around the manga and anime scene you probably know the one I mean. From there I found out what anime was and immediately watched the Bleach anime until I caught up with the weekly releases and patiently waited for it to be converted and uploaded to an anime site run by the same company each week once Dattebayo had subbed it, I think back then a week turnaround on a sub was common. At the least it was 3-4 days after airing. While waiting I picked up Ichigo 100% and loved it, then I watched Toradora and a few of the other Rie Kugimiya voiced shows where she was basically the same character but colour swapped. Then started using the forum for the site and watched some GOAT shows like Code Geass, Monster, Death Note, Ghost In The Shell: SAC, Trigun and loads more based on recommendations. Between the fun of anime and the great chats in forums I just had a blast. Ran my own anime forum and was an admin on 3 others at one point plus a mod on a few more. I was young enough to have time to do all that plus I was active in graphics design forums after seeing loads of cool forum signatures and wanting to learn how to do that. Totally changed my life. I went from a loner with no prospects to now a decade and a half later, still using the stuff I learned back then in ways. Just far less free time now.
Honestly can't remember what I've seen at this stage tbough. When I used MAL back in the day I was up to at least 264 shows watched and rated but I can't remember the details for that account sadly. My whole life was anime and anime community centric for a long time though and it'll always be special to me as a result.
