The best counter-argument is that the logic just doesn't hold up when you think about it.

    1. It doesn’t make you less responsible. Just because someone else might do something doesn’t change the fact that you are still choosing to do it. If a crime is going to happen anyway, does that mean you should volunteer to commit it?

    2. You set your own standards. What other people do isn’t an excuse for your own actions. If you believe something is wrong (or at least questionable), then choosing to do it just because “someone else will” means you’re outsourcing your morality to the lowest common denominator.

    3. It's a slippery slope to justifying anything. “If I don’t cheat, someone else will.” “If I don’t lie on my resume, someone else will.” Taken to the extreme, it’s a blank check for bad behavior.

    4. You can be the exception. A lot of things in the world happen because people assume they’re inevitable. But things can change when someone chooses to say no.

At the end of the day, just because something will happen doesn’t mean you should be the one to do it.

Blade Runner 2049 – A beautifully shot sci-fi flick about AI and what it means to be human. It’s slow and thoughtful, but really worth it.

Arrival – Another deep one, all about language, time, and communication. It’s pretty philosophical, kinda like Interstellar.

The Prestige – If you liked Inception, this one’s a must-watch. It’s about two magicians and has some crazy twists.

Her – A more emotional take on tech and relationships, set in a near-future world. Really thought-provoking.

Donnie Darko – A cult classic that deals with time travel and alternate realities. It’s weird, but in a good way.

Coherence – This one's a hidden gem. A group of friends at a dinner party start experiencing strange things involving parallel universes. Super low-budget, but so clever.

Tenet – If you loved the whole time-bending stuff in Inception, Nolan’s Tenet will definitely scratch that itch.

The Fountain – A visually striking film about love, death, and the quest for eternal life. It’s deep and emotional. My favorite from this list. I even named my cat after a character in this movie.

The cast in the 2002 version is almost perfect to me, including Richard Harris as Abbe, and Henry Cavill as Albert. Oh, and Michael Wincott as the sadistic prison warden is just the best.

It's one of those movies that I know isn't perfect, but it's one of my favorites to put on, and I could watch it anytime.

For me this might be partially because I now have a kid and mostly don't go out to see movies.

I think this is it. I go to the theater at least once a week, and there were a lot of great movies last year. I've seen most on this list, and I'm looking forward to watching the Academy Awards. The Academy isn't perfect by any stretch, but it's a fun night.

it feels like the only movies that are ever on my radar are marvel movies or big sequels

Maybe you're not on social media a lot, or not watching movie-related content so it shows up in your algorithm?

Who's to say that hasn't already happened?

I thought of a world ending scenario where our current form of life goes extinct and the new mirror microbes reign over Earth with new sapient life emerging billions of years from now, trying to make cells like ours.

Who's to say that hasn't already happened?

I got a leather belt from Abercrombie & Fitch in 1997, back when I was 15 and in high school.

I'm now 42, and I've worn that belt at least four times a week since I got it. I'm wearing it right now. It's basically the only belt I ever wear (unless I need to dress more formal), and I hope it lasts forever.

In my opinion, if you go into it expecting a musical, you'll be disappointed too. It's not a musical at all. But the movie does use music to explain mental illness and show a little of what's going on in Arthur's head.

I'm actually surprised at how many audience members and reviewers are critiquing the movie as if it's a musical. To me, that wasn't the point of the music at all.

Personally, I loved it. But it's not a film for everyone. Here's an excerpt from the best review I've read of the film:

More than anything, this drama is a very disturbing commentary on how society goes too far in putting antiheroes and their sociopathy on a pedestal. We love true crime stories more than any other kind as they dominate ratings and bestseller lists. Police procedurals make up most of our scripted dramas these days and have since the 60s. We idolize bad guys, bad boys, and outright villains, sexualizing every scoundrel from J.R. Ewing to Tony Soprano. Heck, on the other side of the DC aisle, there are Marvel villains like Loki who get their very own TV series to star in. Crime podcasts outpace any other by almost 2 to 1. The Menendez Brothers are looking for career rehabilitation. Every shooting gets 24/7 coverage on cable news and such violence doesn’t affect changes in policies, only changes in ratings. And our current presidential contest has one political party running a convicted felon. Are we still entertained? Do we blame the players or the game? And can we admit our complicity as the audience? These are the questions Phillips et al. are asking. They’re not here to service Batman lore. They’re wondering if we’re all nuts.

If that sounds intriguing to you and you go in with the right expectations, you should see the film. It's the best I've seen this year so far, or maybe in second place to The Substance.

I'd love some good non-fiction books with elements of horror/crime/disaster in some way. Similar to The Devil in the White City (or any of Erik Larson's books), Unbroken, or American Kingpin.
