Sure. If I knew I was just going to be randomly assigned a life I wouldn't pick it - no one wants to wind up a slave or whatever! But the galaxy is large and even at its peak the Empire isn't everywhere. And the Empire doesn't even always exist! I think I'm drawn to it because it's familiar enough to the life we have now, but with fun scifi/fantasy elements.

Sure, all of those might be true, though I'd be curious who or what you think that Tiktok is currently a danger to. I would argue, though, that the primary and motivating factor that moved the government to ban Tiktok is that it is doing American companies a solid to the detriment of citizens and consumers in the US. That other stuff is important, but I wanted to address the fact that none of it would have moved lawmakers to ban it.

Anyone who doesn't understand this to be the US government working at the behest of American corporations to eliminate a competitor for them is missing the point.

The hysteria that white guys have when they have to start living in the same world as everyone else blows my mind. I completely agree that a lack of a left-wing party is leaving these people, who have extremely real problems that they're legitimately mad about, few places that they feel addresses they're problem, but I'm a white guy that's lived in Texas my whole life and have never once been called racist, sexist, or a rapist.

I moved from Kindle to Kobo and am glad I did. It is exactly the same experience, except more open. The things you mentioned are boons to me - I love to be able to borrow from the library straight from the device. But you'd be basically paying a little more to move away from Amazon. That was my primary motivation for the move over to Kobo, and I've been glad to have an equally pleasant experience outside of the Amazon ecosystem. But Kobo doesn't subsidize their hardware with their giant online retail monopoly, so the Kobo itself does cost more.

Me and you aren't paying for a person who has a gambling problem, all of us are paying for social welfare. By all means take the people causing the issue to task and have them contribute to that welfare, but it's not accurate or helpful to try and turn the situation into a competition between "recipients" and "contributors" to welfare, when the truth is that we're all contributing and receiving in a variety of ways. If you want to find a villain, look at the people profiting off of all this.

He might also be saying that neither candidate were acceptable for whatever reasons. It is clear to me, for instance, that Trump is worse in literally every respect than Harris. And yet one of the qualifications I have for vote for someone is that they are not actively doing a genocide. With that in mind, I might say that both options are equally unpalatable in the sense that I can't vote for either of them. There are clearer ways to say it, but maybe that's what they meant.

An apt description of K-12. The only people who are given any sort of consequences or responsibility for how the students do are the teachers. We go out of our way to makes sure that the students and parents don't have any responsibility for the success or behavior of the student, and admin are beholden to the numbers.

Public education is one of the last surviving public institutions, and as such it has become the lever that gets pulled in every single situation. But schools cannot fix societal/structural problems, and pretending that they can is, generously, burying your head in the sand.

I had some pretty big depression as a first time dad. The combination of such a huge lifestyle change and the lack of sleep really did a number on me. Caring for an infant is not something that comes naturally to me. Making it to the toddler phase was a struggle! Every stage that she's grown into has been easier than the last for me, personally. We had our second accidentally (and put a permanent stop to that risk soon after lol), but the second time around I knew what to expect and was pretty good at parenting, so the second has been much more manageable for us than the first time. I love my kids more than anything in the world and wouldn't change anything, but having kids was much harder than I thought it would be before I had them.

Every day I'm so thankful that we were the reverse. We didn't realize it at the time, but our first was a terrible sleeper. Our second obviously comes up with challenges of her own (the tantrums are going to be something else, I can already tell), but as someone who doesn't operate well when missing sleep, my mental health has been much better the second time around.
