I disagree because of variance in aging and how it correlates with physical health and mental lucidity.

Especially now that we have people pursuing lifestyles that promote health and longevity. We're going to have some shockingly healthy old people that are healthier than people 20 years younger than them who make less healthy choices. And assuming medical technology keeps advancing, this gap may get even greater than we can imagine now. Ultimately, an arbitrary and fixed forced retirement number does come off as ageism.

I'll probably continue primarily using Reddit until some sort of user created group system is implemented (if ever).

Ex: On Reddit much of my time is spent in trading subreddits with full time traders talking. This just doesn't work as a subcategory/tag in an econ/business oriented group. The issue I have with Tildes is the lack of niche communities for specific areas of interest.

Vacuum tubes! Have a set of them on my headphone amp paired with some DT880s. Went through quite a few amplifiers that never paired quite right with them, but the tubes did the trick and kicked up the bass, toned down the high frequencies, and smoothed out the sound a bit. Essentially, traded some accuracy for a sound that's much more enjoyable. Now it's the best of both worlds with rich engaging sound, and while retaining a huge soundstage that's always impressive during gaming (DT880s are reference headphones for studio use).

Have half a dozen sets of those tubes just in case the world ever runs out!

Cheap and quality aren't diametrically opposed concepts. The materials are cheap, but it's generally well designed and has a coherent design language. I remember watching a Q&A session after a lecture on the history of Bauhaus, and a question came up about Ikea. I think the questioner wanted to know how the founders of the movement would feel about their ideas being "bastardized", but the lecturer responded "They would LOVE Ikea!"

Granted, some of it "cheap" in a bad sense (plastic parts that shouldn't be plastic, hellish assemblies, etc), but it's nothing that can't be checked against the online reviews of the items. On the other hand, there's some truly well designed stuff too like rail systems for kitchen gadgets and the like - stuff which doesn't need to have functionality balanced against quality of materials.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 - This game was magic. It had a perfect balance of arcade and realism. Or was it something else? Whatever it was, I haven't been able to replicate the online experience that this game gave with newer Battlefields.

Some game that do have modern equivalents:

System Shock 2 + Deus Ex // Prey (2017) - I feel the modern gaming audience didn't know what to make of Prey. I certainly didn't, being a fan of the original Prey which bears no resemblance to the modern incarnation. But it shines as what it meant to be, which is a modern interpretation of the classic true FPS RPG System Shock and Deus Ex games. Forget Bioshock, Prey does it better.

Myst // Obduction (2016) - An almost entirely ignored adventure game from Cyan. I haven't heard it mentioned in an online discussion once, which is a shame because it's a very solid adventure game with wonderful art direction and some intriguing world building elements like time bubbles.

Fallout 2 // Underrail - An insane indie RPG with hundreds of hours of gameplay, an amazing soundtrack, and some truly novel gameplay mechanics (the oddity stat system). The game is hard as hell but it's an incredibly rewarding experience and is a straight modern reincarnation of the RPG greats of past decades.

Look into the Windows 10 LTSB branch. It's a cut down version of W10 without the app store, tracking, pre-installed applications, etc. The new release is coming out this summer (it only receives a new version every couple of years).

From what I've read it's a favorable alternative to rolling back to Windows 7.

On a tangent, I feel more oppressed by the group think and mass down voting on Reddit than I do from any site censorship policies.

It's genuinely disheartening to walk into a big discussion on Reddit and write out a well thought out response with unpopular opinions, only to see enraged/sarcastic emotional responses and have the post instantly buried without any good discussion. Stopping this behavior is one of the primary objectives on Tildes and it goes a long way toward protecting free speech in the sense that everyone has the right to voice their opinion.

In my opinion a website with a more limited set of discussion topics within which communication is free and uncensored is favorable and arguable more "free" than one with a larger set of discussion topics within which communication is often censored by the website mechanics.

    Cor Scorpii - Monument

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY-pubwDfoQ

Quite an overlooked black metal album. Even in it's own black metal subgenre, Sognametal, it's overlooked.

Sognametal is a tony offshoot of black metal that arrived in the late 90s when bands radically broke away from the strictly limiting low-fi style guidelines. It's characterized by layered guitars with lots of counterpoint, and the lead guitar has a strong clean tone that breaks away from the wall-of-sound and carries strong themes through the song. The songs are very long and complex and highly instrumental based. It was pioneered by Windir, and after their lead singer tragically died in a blizzard there has been a cult following for their style of music.

Cor Scorpii takes the folky melodies of Windir and instead focuses on a classical sound. The song composition is way beyond what most other technically inclined metal bands are doing, and I honestly think it's one of the best composed metal albums I've ever heard.

I'm not sure why it doesn't even have any popularity in the metal scene. It has the extremely harsh black metal elements with the vocals and intensity, and no extraneous orchestras/choirs/cheesy sound effects - almost all of the music is coming from many layers of guitar work and a simple keyboard layer. I think that perhaps the purist black metal fans want the simple, in your face style of gunmetal grey black metal, and the fans of the more lofty, melodic, transcendental stuff want more catchiness and gimmick. But I love it! It's the best of no compromise black metal and uses those tools to compose an album that absolutely blows 99% of "symphonic black metal" out of the park in both technicality and inspiration.
