Alternatives to older games that were amazing to play
Some games were just magical to play and yet have never really had something come out which rivaled them or even recreated that experience to some extent. Which games would you say provide that for the following, if any?
- Black & White / Populous (Good God games are hard to find, and Godus was just disappointing)
- Xwing vs. Tie Fighter (Nothing so satisfying as capital ship destruction!)
- Master of Orion 2 (All around fun dynamics)
- Star Control 2 - (Tons of Humor, interesting back stories)
What do you wish had a modern day equivalent, and does it?
If you liked the old Commandos series, I would highly recommend Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. I enjoyed it so much I even wrote a Steam review of it (which I rarely do).
As for games that have no remake/modern equivalent that I would love to see:
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Star Wars Jedi Knight / II / Jedi Academy
Die by the Sword
Rune
p.s. Star Control 2 was so good. I still go back and play Ur-Quan Masters every now and again.
Republic Comando was so good. They need to make another shooter like that. Maybe as Stormtroopers this time? Then you can play with a slightly different time period but still keep the darker atmosphere.
I'd love to see the Imperial Commando sequel that was supposedly in development become a reality. Especially because we might finally get some closer about Sev that way!
Gameplay wise, though, the creative director (I think) of Republic Commando was also the director of Halo 5, so there are some similarities in the squad gameplay, though Halo 5's wasn't quite as in-depth. I know Halo 5 was pretty widely negatively received, but I enjoyed it.
Duuuude. The memory floodgates just crashed open. That game's combat system was so innovative, but, wow, the bugs!
Yeah, it had its "quirks", LOL... but the GOG version is pretty much bug free. It's great fun to play at LAN parties. ;)
Bought it ages ago but never downloaded! Welp, that's what I'll be doing this evening. Cheers!
I would love for a modern version of KOTOR or Rogue Squadron.
Oh my god... Rogue Squadron... Such memories...
Sign me up for the god games. Been a while since I played one.
An updated Black & White with an expanded world, seafaring, sea monsters, larger populations, more citizen activities and CIV-like progression through history... bestow powers on random individuals and see what they get up to...
One can only dream.
The world desperately needs a new Champions of Norrath or Dark Alliance remaster. High detail, 4-player 2.5D isometric hack & slash rpg. Why hasn't anything similar been created since? This genre is epic.
Oh my god, someone else remembers Norrath? I still play the first game with my dad every time I visit him, we've probably beat it around 40 times by now. Nothing has ever come close to it.
Never heard of Dark Alliance though, will have to look into it. Anything in particular that makes it different?
EDIT: just looked it up, ohhhh it's Baldur's Gate ok have heard this is a great series
If anyone remembers the old Dungeon Keeper series (which was killed by EA, like most good franchises) there's a re-invention of the original out called War for the Overworld. That video is from 2015. Being that it's now 2018, and a massive free update came out just last month - it's fully cooked at this point. Bugs are gone, engine is nearly twice as fast after this last update. Several packages of DLC are out, it now has five game modes and three campaigns. The last update also launched a fully featured map editor with scripting, and finally the ability to make player-created campaigns. At this point it's vastly better than DK/DK2 ever were. People have even recreated the maps from those games.
If you need some classic Quake3 action there's the FOSS OpenArena
Battlefield Bad Company 2 - This game was magic. It had a perfect balance of arcade and realism. Or was it something else? Whatever it was, I haven't been able to replicate the online experience that this game gave with newer Battlefields.
Some game that do have modern equivalents:
System Shock 2 + Deus Ex // Prey (2017) - I feel the modern gaming audience didn't know what to make of Prey. I certainly didn't, being a fan of the original Prey which bears no resemblance to the modern incarnation. But it shines as what it meant to be, which is a modern interpretation of the classic true FPS RPG System Shock and Deus Ex games. Forget Bioshock, Prey does it better.
Myst // Obduction (2016) - An almost entirely ignored adventure game from Cyan. I haven't heard it mentioned in an online discussion once, which is a shame because it's a very solid adventure game with wonderful art direction and some intriguing world building elements like time bubbles.
Fallout 2 // Underrail - An insane indie RPG with hundreds of hours of gameplay, an amazing soundtrack, and some truly novel gameplay mechanics (the oddity stat system). The game is hard as hell but it's an incredibly rewarding experience and is a straight modern reincarnation of the RPG greats of past decades.
