You are most certainly right. CRTs were extremely fast compared to the very first LCD monitors. But, it had other shortcomings compared to today's tech. First, as Arch said, there was slow fade time, and scanning was left to right for each pixel which probably contributed to the feeling of it a bit. Then we had the famous sprites which altered the viewing experience a lot. You can see it in slow motion the difference from an OLED is massive.

Nowadays we can just refresh the entire screen every frame without any temporal effects from the imaging itself. The only caveat is slower initial drawing time but nowadays monitors are fast enough that you won't notice it and with newer technologies like mini LEDs, they are getting faster and faster response times.

Coming back to your initial question, I do think it is a modern problem. I don't ever recall experiencing problems with panning in the past but nowadays it is unbearable to watch. It makes me feel like my eyes are juddering but in reality, it's just a slow-moving image.

My interpretation is the part they said "due to being a media company our departures are loudest" was a direct response to that. I would say it's even textbook response for damage control. They didn't bring the topic up directly so they can distance themselves and ignores big portions of allegations to put the blame on Internet fame.

Another opinionated take from me is that they were signaling about some layoffs. While I'm hopeful they are going to fire these people, it may also be about a potential downsizing. I guess it's something we will never know fully.

To add to your comment, we are overvaluing how much music means to an average user. Personalized music systems have been available for decades. Still, it didn’t make a dent in how people consume music in a general sense until iPod became a thing. We had amazing stereo systems being sold, walkmans, good headphones and let’s be honest, headphone technology isn’t exactly a state secret. Their design stayed the same for most parts. Meaning, the public could reach to proper audio systems so that they could enjoy their music yet it wasn’t this common to see someone rocking their headphones daily. So much so that music had to be produced with mono compatibility and small speakers in mind to keep those songs sound good on an average system. Because, to an average listener, spending this much money on music was unfathomable.

Then, a couple of decades pass. Suddenly a small device arrived with the ability to fit hundreds of songs inside. But its greatest selling point wasn’t even this. Because at the time we already had computers that could copy your CDs to your hard drive and compress it to much smaller mp3 files. The biggest factor was iTunes. You didn’t have to pay for the extra 12 songs you were never going to listen to. You didn’t have to deal with going to the store to buy it. Essentially, it was a system that made you the owner of your music with a %90 discount on all your effort and money and it was a legal alternative. At the time this was a big fuck you to the greedy music industry. Of course, it caught on, because people for the first time, people felt like they were paying the value they thought their favourite songs deserved.

I’m pretty sure it can be argued how much artists’ efforts must be rewarded in creating amazing pieces. But people’s reactions would be the same as it’s already been said here. They would be listening less. Streaming normalized the notion of trying new genres, bands and formats. This wouldn’t have been possible if streaming music had not been so accessible to everyone. And did this so, despite the greedy companies striking everything down with copyright laws and trying to keep their products under their belts. For once, we have music services that serve pretty much all of the songs you want and their catalogues are not spread across multiple services that you have to subscribe to all of them like we had with cable TV.

When we look at the comments here, we see people saying they’re all right with the price changes. Even on the pirate forums, people are saying Spotify is one service that they can justify paying and they don’t need to pirate music any more. That should say something about the accessibility of these services.

So, I know plenty of our musician friends feel robbed because of these streaming services. But what they’ve gained from discoverability is due to the accessibility of music, which would not have been possible without these prices.

As a linguist, I believe the biggest problem of written language comes from one thing, that it is not natural to human nature. By design, it is supposed to take on a medium, where you control timing, pitch and emphasis and put it in a linear line made of mere wiggles on paper. Because of this, a lot of things get left out and timing rules were generalized under what we call commas.

Now, in natural languages, we have a lot of arbitrary rules that humans have just somehow "settled" on it. We don't try to understand why a certain item is called the way it is even though we love to hypothesise about it and probably never gonna find an answer. But what didn't happen is that in written language, we didn't just universally agree on its rules. We just created institutions that govern how written text should be stylised and how things are spelt today are essentially the rules that carried from earlier days of the press.

Just like you said, the usage of commas is in a way, an art. At the end of the day, written language is your notation and commas are how you shape your music. Rules of how you're supposed to write that music are already written. But in a setting where you are not obliged to do so, I see no reason to stick to it in its entirety. Because, at the end of the day, I use my commas how a real speech sounds like in my head. If I am going to take a short stop to breathe, and maybe emphasise something, it deserves a comma.

I've been checking kbin for some time and my impressions are the same. On top recently it started pushing more and more German magazines from lemmy to me which ended up with me playing whack-a-mole with "unsubbing" from one every day.

Alas, I don't think it's a problem that is going to end because every day I check, I see a new magazine that is completely unrelated to the ones that I've subscribed to. This could also start being a problem with adding more subjects here. I've been here since 2018 and I only unsubbed to a handful once and it was a done deal ever since. If we keep adding more tildes to peoples' home feeds, I can see that being also annoying like kbin is doing. Thankfully so far things looking good and haven't had that problem.

To go back to to the community subject, let's be honest, most of the new magazines created will be around joking around due to human nature. That we just love joking around, even if it is at the cost of keeping the flow of the important question. Because of this, I have no clue how the websites in question are going to work. And If there is a way to stop new magazines from invading my feed, why is it so hard for me to find them?

I'm on the same page with you. While I like the simplistic design language, at first was confused with the posts. Title font being smaller than the body and lack of division between the post and the comments definitely made me take a second to understand what I was looking at.

On the other hand, text are easy to read. Definitely uses that space for ease of readability.

One interesting behaviour I noticed is that if you scroll down enough to reach the keyboard on reply screen, it will push the keyboard down at the same time scrolling your reply. Don't think I have ever seen this in an app before. My apologies If this is a default ios behaviour. Just wanted to add that as a feedback.

In that case, definitely give FF 14 a try. You don't even have to pay for it to be able to RP. The game itself is unlike any other MMO. 'tis more of an RPG game with MMO elements sprinkled on top. So you can just do your main story quests on the side to progress and focus on roleplay if you want. Just by following the story itself, you'll get all the necessary items and levels you need. If I were to summarise the game, 'tis pretty much an MMO where competitiveness is stripped out. You'll easily see the effects of it on its own community, even more so in the RP community. So, if you're interested, I can send links to some of the big RP hubs depending on the timezone you'd wanna play in.

I'd like to ask what kind of roleplay you're after. If you're looking for an MMO-styled RP and not a tabletop or RPG game, I would definitely recommend FFXIV. Even with the facial expressions alone, it wins my vote on that aspect due to the immersion it provides. Can even recommend you to some Immersive RP communities if you like.

I might be little straying away from the topic here but when I see the word "illusion" being used in the context of consciousness, I think of the perceived reality. As in your thought process will always be affected by internal things like, whether you are tired that day or maybe some hormone isn't being pumped enough so you are more likely to see it more negative way. Because more we learn about the brain more we realize it is not a simple process, but a combined work effort of your whole body. For instance it is now speculated that depression might be caused by gut biome and these bacterias could even play a bigger role in our decision making and such.

Which brings us to the "illusionary" part of consciousness. If our brains are constantly manipulated by these things how much of it is real and how much of it is made up by our minds. Although, this shouldn't be mistaken with "what is reality" or "is real even real" kind of questions. It is more of a questiontioning of how much of our thoughts being shaped by things like our nervous system, genetics, gut biome or even microplastics which we don't even come close to comprehend any of these at this point.

I would love to know if there is a technical reason for it but back in NES days you would put the cartridge in and if you were to wait long enough, it would load the game demo so game/gameplay could be shown on the shop's window without ever needing someone to play the game. So, it was mainly used as a system where it made sense to demonstrate the game on arcades/consoles to sell you the game. Also makes big sense for arcades because machine might not be on the use at the moment so you would need a way to show people your game.

In Destiny's case, game only pings the login server if you press a key. So it's possible devs wanted to use a well known design language for a different purpose. Also games like Fifa 2020 still load into a cinematic/demo gameplay so it is still very much in use for that reason. But like I said, I would love someone who knows about it to add to the discussion.

I've been following this story for a while and I am mostly confused about the things I keep hearing. An app working on a kernel level access doesn't sound good at all but I've never seen an explanation of how bad this would be. In fact I even saw some comments on the internet comparing it to hardware drivers we've been using all the time. Which makes me curious about this driver even more.

Could someone explain to me how would someone be able to get this driver infected and how big would the severity of it would be? Like, if there was a zero day exploit, would someone in my game press a button to infect my computer with whatever malware they're planning to use on or would it require the user to click on phishing mails etc? In addition to this, how is this driver any different than any other anti-cheat system or hardware drivers and could someone also infect them in the same way vanguard could be affected?

Now to add this topic any further, if you want to have a good production quality, you have to tackle the beast called mixing. Guide here lists many great software and hardware but not knowing how to use them properly will most likely end up in frustration. Without that knowledge, it doesn't matter if you have $20,000 worth of equipment or just $300.

Some people believe recording a song is simple as just pressing the record button and just putting some EQ on the way they like and be done with it. Sadly its nothing close to the reality and there are lots of aspects of the sound that will not translate from knowledge of playing an instrument. If you think your mix as a room, every instrument you add will rush to fill that room and after a point it just becomes a race between instruments to see who will get the biggest part in it and thats where you come in. Your job is to tame all of these instruments to play nicely with each other and create a harmony.

But fear not, there are lots of good guides online and people willing to help you out. You should just start with the bare bones like your interface and mic and immediately start training your ear. As soon as you start, you will realize while your mix is clean, it lacks certain kick or it just sounds dull. Thats the part where you're gonna need to toy with EQ and compression and move on to things like mid/side channeling. But like I said, there are plenty of good guides and with time and practice, your mix will get better and better.

When it comes to DAW's, most of them do the same thing but main differences will be their UI and the tools they come with. I started with lite edition of cubase that came with my processor and haven't had any troubles with. Although, it had like 24 track limit at the time it was just more than enough to learn basics. I would recommend Garage Band as it's UI is very simple and pretty much identical to Logic Pro X and its also free. As for the plug-ins, I'd say hold off buying anything at first. There are lots of good plugins out there but most of these DAW's will have plugins good enough to do the job.

Lastly, when it comes to recording your video, I'd say you have two viable options to go for. First one would be recording your song before and dubbing it to video but if you prefer the live feeling, you will need to sync your audio to camera. Since it's harder to start both video recording and audio at the same time, I'd say just play a bar of dead notes before you start and then sync that sound with the audio from your camera. At the moment I cant think of anything else to write but if you need anything else, you can ask us in here or just search for it on the internet and good luck with your new hobby.

In addition to this, when VRChat was released I started to watch a group of streamers hanging out together. For those who doesn't know what vrchat is. It is basically a roleplay game where you can make your custom avatar and play with your virtual reality headset on as that character. As the nature of twitch, playing together is basically a free advertising for every streamer involved. So when they formed a group together eventually they have started having relationships and for RP purposes, people would start "dating" or "marry" each other. But twitch chat took those relationships very seriously. When a said streamer didn't spend their time with their "significant other" chat would spam things like "why arent you with him/her" "you cheater" "go hug him/her" and just like this wasn't enough whenever the said person was online people would jump on the chat and scream "X is online go join him/her" to a point this becomes so irritating that streamer has to remind people this is just a persona they made all the time. Twitch chat can really be awful at times.
