It's hard to draw a line here, as you mention. Would you feel the same if he sold a few shares of the company? What if he was only a minor shareholder, or only owned a single share? I care more about the company doing it because they are marketing to like-minded people. Toxic views like that shouldn't be validated, and we still see Christians cling to the franchise because of it.

I see the behavior of the owner as separate from the running of the business. I care more about the behavior of Nestle (privatizing water in developing nations), the beef industry (climate impact), and Starbucks/Amazon/others (union busting) because their negative impacts are built into the business model. I'm comfortable saying nearly everyone with that much wealth is a piece of shit and resent them all equally. I'd happily see their companies nationalized or carved up and given as equal shares to the actual workers, but that's a different conversation.

Maybe it's a doomer take, but the owners and shareholders of most companies are shitty people, and every major corporation is built on exploitation somewhere in the value chain. I still need to buy stuff. I avoid the worst of them, among which I no longer count Chick-fil-A, and try to reward companies for good changes, for which I'd say discontinuing donations counts.

Not all biofuels are the same. Yes, some are more carbon intensive than fossil fuels -- corn ethanol being a good example. I would not recommend those. Some feedstocks are carbon negative (I recall estimates of 60-80% reductions in CO2 for certain crops). Of course, traveling on green electricity (or not at all) is better, when possible.

I can share a few papers on biofuel feedstocks (albeit for aviation not automotive applications), if you're interested. Your point about land use change is also a good one, which is why I'd only recommend it for applications where electrification isn't practical: aviation, long-haul travel to remote locations (รก la @Loire), heavy duty equipment, etc. Another common feedstock is waste fats and greases like beef tallow, which come with the ethical dilemma of flying/driving no longer being vegan.

This won't rival EVs. As it mentions in the article, this engine relies on hydrogen fuel to be carbon-free. Some auto manufacturers are already looking at hydrogen fuel cells, which haven't taken off due to the cost and technical issues with hydrogen fuel. Batteries are simply cheaper and easier. This engine doesn't address those challenges, although it's certainly a neat design.

If we're talking alternatives to EVs, I want to see articles about buses and trains not alternative engine architectures. Improvements in efficiency/performance don't address the climate crisis; they just enable more consumption.

I disagree. You can have social ownership within the framework of a market economy. UBI doesn't imply capitalism in its current form will remain. As opposed to a fully planned economy, I'd prefer market allocation of resources, as it does a pretty good (i.e efficient) job as long as wealth disparity is in check.

Even if we transitioned to a non-market economy eventually, it would likely be practical to make changes in stages. Nationalizing key infrastructure (railways, utilities, monopolistic companies, etc.), strengthening labor unions, and enabling collective ownership would be easier than abolishing the dollar (in my non-economist opinion).

I'll add my own thoughts now that this has been up for a while. I've been consciously poly for ~6 years, but I was exploring it before I knew there was a word for it.

I am out to my friends, some family, and a few co-workers who ran into me on a date with someone that wasn't my nesting partner (who they'd met). For context, I'm out as bisexual to fewer people.

Serious relationships, for me, include some combination of introducing them to friends, possibly taking them to family events, posting on socials with them, and spending consecutive days together. A step beyond that would be what I consider a "primary partner", with whom I live, share items/responsibilities/vacations, and default to spending time (i.e. if I have nothing else going on, I'll be with or near my primary). I haven't had two primary partners simultaneously yet, so I can't speak to those dynamics.

For me, marriage is off the table, as polygamy is illegal and I don't feel comfortable adding a glass ceiling to other relationships. I'm also not religious, and marriage as a concept carries a lot of such baggage. I can imagine non-monogamous dynamics that support marriage, but I'm not interested in such arrangements.

    Have you found love recently?

What do serious relationships look like for you? Is marriage on the table, or is it contrary to polyamory?

I'm hoping to spark discussion of the topic, since I haven't seen it mentioned much on Tildes.
