  2. Comment on Achilles: Over 400 vulnerabilities found in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon DSP chip, threatening the security of hundreds of millions of Android devices in ~tech

Attackers can turn the phone into a perfect spying tool, without any user interaction required – The information that can be exfiltrated from the phone include photos, videos, call-recording,...

Qualcomm provides a wide variety of chips that are embedded into devices that make up over 40% of the mobile phone market, including high-end phones from Google, Samsung, LG, Xiaomi, OnePlus and more.

More than 400 vulnerable pieces of code were found within the DSP chip we tested, and these vulnerabilities could have the following impact on users of phones with the affected chip:

    • Attackers can turn the phone into a perfect spying tool, without any user interaction required – The information that can be exfiltrated from the phone include photos, videos, call-recording, real-time microphone data, GPS and location data, etc.
    • Attackers may be able to render the mobile phone constantly unresponsive – Making all the information stored on this phone permanently unavailable – including photos, videos, contact details, etc – in other words, a targeted denial-of-service attack.
    • Malware and other malicious code can completely hide their activities and become un-removable.

Check Point Research decided not to publish the full technical details of these vulnerabilities until mobile vendors have a comprehensive solution to mitigate the possible risks described.

We strongly recommend organizations protect their corporate data on their mobile devices by using mobile security solutions. SandBlast Mobile provides real-time threat intelligence and visibility into the mobile threats that could affect businesses, and provides complete protection against the risks detailed in this blog, associated with the Quallcomm vulnerabilities.

A lot of words but no actual details.

    • No affected DSP models listed
    • Attack vector?

Android fragmentation will leave many phones unpatched.

That iphone se2 is looking pretty good.

Full body cam leading to Floyd's death has been released by Police Activity (30mins): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkEGGLu_fNU

    Video description as follows:

The Hennepin County judge Peter Cahill overseeing the George Floyd case has made the body worn cameras from ex-officers Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng available. The video, taken from the body worn cameras shows Kueng and Lane responding to a convenience store on May 25 on a report that Floyd had allegedly used a fake $20 bill. Their former colleagues, Tou Thao and Derek Chauvin, later showed up to assist. The footage follows Lane and Kueng as they apprehend Floyd and two acquaintances. Lane holds Floyd at gunpoint and handcuffs him, and the officers briefly question the visibly panicked man before attempting to get him into their patrol SUV.

After struggling to get him into the police squad, Floyd is eventually held down by officers on the ground. Floyd is heard calling to his mother, repeatedly saying he can’t breathe and that everything hurts. After a few minutes, Senior officers Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao arrive and help wrestle him to the ground. Chauvin then places his knee on Floyd’s neck, where it stays for over nine minutes. Lane and Kueng hold down Floyd’s back and knees as Thao keeps increasingly agitated bystanders at bay. Chauvin gets up after paramedics arrive and load Floyd into an ambulance. Lane accompanies them and administers CPR as they take Floyd to an out-of-the-way street corner, while Kueng goes back into Cup Foods interviewing an employee about the alleged counterfeit $20 bill and collecting evidence.

The autopsy report (released on June 4th) indicates that Floyd was possibly under inflence at the time as well (though the pdf is no longer avaliable on the county's website):

The medical examiner's report also details blunt-force injuries to the skin of Floyd's head, face and upper lip, as well as the shoulders, hands and elbows and bruising of the wrists consistent with handcuffs.

Signed by Dr. Andrew M. Baker, it says Floyd had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on April 3. A post-mortem nasal swab confirmed that diagnosis. The report notes that because a positive result for coronavirus can persist for weeks after the disease has resolved, "the result most likely reflects asymptomatic but persistent ... positivity from previous infection."

In addition to fentanyl and methamphetamine, the toxicology report from the autopsy showed that Floyd also had cannabinoids in his system when he died.

Floyd also had heart disease, hypertension and sickle cell trait — a mostly asymptomatic form of the more serious sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that primarily affects African Americans.

Reddit censorship is almost entirely from moderators of specific subs, though. Honestly, if anything Reddit's big issue (imo) is not enough central censorship

r/watchpeopledie getting banned is not a result of the sub's lack of moderation but the fact that the content of the sub is not advertiser friendly. If I remember correctly, some members of the subreddit are posting the video of Christchurch shooting, the mods imposed strict ban for anyone posting the video.

r/watchpeopledie has been banned please discuss

On the other end you have sub that no moderation like r/worldpolitics, which looks just like any other top subs at this point.

What reddit really needs is a mechanism to retire unqualified moderators.

Back in March there is a post showing how 92 of the mods controls some top 500 subs.
Any and all relevant discussions from that post has been deleted.

Pointing out how much power few people have gets you removed from this sub apparently.

The moderators have the ultimate power of what content is shown and member of the subreddit are basically powerless against any mod abuse. Those angers and frustration are channelled into subs such as r/watchredditdie. The admins are the only one in power that can remove moderators, and they did, half assly by remove half of TD's moderators.

    One on hackernews points out:

    hombre_fatal 21 days ago [–]

Little known fact: you can take over any subreddit if the creator/mods haven't had had public activity in 60 days.
    How? Just ask: https://old.reddit.com/r/redditrequest/

I took over some big subreddits this way and I've had big subreddits taken away from me because I forgot to log in and comment on the account I used to create it. Even though I was active on a non-creator/non-mod account. It's actually how I found out about the "feature".

A very poorly implemented feature given the potential value of subreddits and all the work it takes to grow one.
So if you run a subreddit that you care about, remember to assign some active mods even just to avoid someone taking over your subreddit.

I feel like based on my Reddit experience more federation will make it more censored, by giving the mod-equivalents full power.
As you can see reddit mods already have that power.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/11/reddit-raises-300-million-at-3-billion-valuation.html

Speculation: Reddit has long past the point of a community run discussion board to become a profit driven website, one that is like facebook, where the moderation is driven by public outcry. Reddit will maximize traffic by maintaining a certain degree of controversial topic on the front page, only stepping in when said topic gone out of hand and getting reported by mainstream media, and hurts the site's advertisement.

    Just a speculation.

One of reddit's attraction is the various interest-centrict subs. Back when reddit first came out it only has one front page and you could post anything there. As users grow, the sub feature was added. Without a user mass the sub feature will not see much use.

Lemmy is not reddit alternative, no community driven project will grow to the size of reddit without substantial financial backing. When you see the existing reddit alternative they are all exiles from the banned subreddit such that you have people with extreme opinions. Lemmy would at least allow those who wish not to get involved with the alternatives to establish their own smaller reddit circle with their own moderation rules.

    I think that's a good thing.

They did the raise in mid-march due to an influx of online purchases: https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-100000-new-hires-and-pay-raise-amid-coronavirus-2020-3?op=1

"We are seeing a significant increase in demand, which means our labor needs are unprecedented for this time of year," the blog post said.

The moves are designed to help its warehouse and delivery workers as they deal with increased workloads during the coronavirus outbreak, which is causing more people to shop online.

the pay drop is likely due to demand leveling off:

In some warehouses, the company appears to have been able to manage demand sufficiently that it’s now asking workers to take time off.

The Indiana worker told Business Insider that in their warehouse managers were offering voluntary time off.

It might have been better to be laid off than continue been employed:

The same worker said that if Amazon had shut down warehouses to shield its staff, employees would have been eligible to claim unemployment. The person said this might have meant more income given the $US600 federal boost to unemployment payments introduced in April.

That boost is due to come to an end in July, and at the moment it means roughly half of US workers can earn more in unemployment than from their regular salaries.

    Respect your viewer's time.

Typical podcast format doesn't get many views (if you even care) over a scripted video.

Due to the nature of a live conversation between different people there will be extra overhead for exchanging information between persons, which will result on longer run time. Retention rate goes down the longer the video is.

You can control how your audio sounds, but less so for others. So do some audio testing.

So if you insist on keeping this a podcast format (which I'd recommended against.):

    • Rehearsal important information beforehand.
    • Provide a table of content to the timestamp of each topic discussed.
    • Allocating time budgets for each section and keep in mind of the call runtime.

    Good luck

Tar Kim's guide is without a doubt the most commonly recommended resource for beginners due to the easier flow and being the first free English grammar guide to the market.

One point of contention is that the guide has not been updated much since its publication

The other site on the same category, though much less recognized is the imabi.net website which covers most if not all of japanese grammar with its 400+ lessons. The site is through and quite intimidating on first glance for beginners.
