When thinking about abuse in general, it feels strange to think that there are people who haven't experienced a significant amount of abuse.
I don't talk very explicitly about the experiences that hurt when revisiting them, but many people I know can at least make educated guesses.
What I talked a lot about is the relationship to my ex-girlfriend. The intentionality and consequences are more straightforward. At the time of the relationship I saw a broken girl who couldn't be held responsible, who I thought would get better. Many people didn't treat me well in the past, so I didn't have the alarm bells to warn me. Today what she did only feels like pure evil. After the relationship we texted a few times and I doubt there is any regret or guilt she feels about any of it. I know she can be empathetic, but it's quite selective.
I never completely recovered from the emotional abuse and I've never been in a relationship again. On top of it, I tend to attract women who seem so innocent and turn out to be monsters. I wonder if acting innocent as a mask is conscious decision. A close friend of mine had a hard time believing my stories which doesn't make things easier. I think it has changed, but again, it makes me wonder why these things happen to me regularly while it is hard to imagine for others.
Anyway, I hope someday I can have a healthy relationship. Even though I have a few great friends, I still can't imagine being in a relationship. -

I got a good job that I'm surprisingly good at, have a nice apartment in a much more interesting city and the sun is finally back too. There is still quite a lot of debt and baggage from all those underwhelming years, but I'm finally excited again which helps me to not think about the parts of my life that I still have to work on. I've struggled with mental health problems all my life, especially ADHD and related issues, and I doubted my ability to live a 'normal' life, so this is a huge success for me.

It's true that you need a lot of math when studying economics but that's still not enough to cover everything you need. There's a huge number of models, some more complex than others. You can't teach all of them, but the more math you know, the easier it is to learn them. I can only talk about my experience here in Germany and I had a lot of freedom to specialize in certain areas. I could have had the same experience as him, math-heavy, theoretical, but fortunately didn't have to. Not every university is the same, but as others already said, the topics he talks about are not ignored at all, even though he might have felt that way in university and I get his feelings about that. Piketty is the most obvious example of inequality research. It's similar to people having to take a few economics courses who end up thinking that these simplified models are all there is.

The problem is that economics is difficult to follow without the basics, and research outcomes are often counterintuitive which makes them sound disagreeable. Outrageous findings get more headlines, while nuanced research gets ignored. Moreover, economic facts don't equal policy recommendations. It doesn't help that outdated views are parroted in public discourse, and politicians cherry-pick whatever supports their positions while ignoring modern research.
Like any field involving status and money, economics attracts a minority of questionable people. It’s frustrating having to explain this all the time, especially to left-wing people, even though I am one myself. Worst are the comments about the Nobel prize in Economics. “Nobel despised people who cared more about profits than society's well-being”. They shouldn’t have named him, but this opinion is completely incorrect. Economics is all about welfare and includes concerns like poverty, inequality, fairness, happiness etc.

I even had a suspicion that I had it, but I had a therapist and psychiatrist who didn't take it seriously, so I didn't want to spend the money I didn't have, until I coincidentally found a psychiatrist who is very competent and understanding.
My education is fine, even though it took very long which makes finding a job difficult and I'm starting to feel ashamed. There are fortunately people who get it and know about my ADHD, but I don't feel safe around others. And even if I get a job, I don't know if I can handle it.
You're not alone. We'll figure it out. I hope your medication will work well!

However, trying to become better made me realize how miserable I actually was and I didn't have the means to change much about my situation, so it's hard to say, if the impact was positive overall.
Nathan the Wise might have shaped my values significantly. Tolerance is very important to me

I really enjoyed the first two chapters. After a while I got tired of starting over again and slowly walking back and forth. I'm not sure, if I'll have the patience to finish it without a guide
I'm aware of that, but I don't fit the description anymore. It's a bit more complicated. And even though I'm very clear about what I consider acceptable or not, they lack the ability to see their own behavior as problematic and will be surprised when I set boundaries.
You're completely right about giving people the benefit of the doubt. I have many friends with mental health issues and unfortunately it's sometimes impossible to know if a behavior is appropriate or not.
