Every human is multi-faceted and can be a good friend towards one person and abusive towards another.

Case in point: a long time ago I rode the bus regularly. For a while I had crutches and the bus driver helped me with the crutches when getting in and out. There was nobody watching and so he could easily not have done that.

I later found out that he raped some young woman who was alone on his bus, and supposedly it wasn't going to be possible for her to have kids later. I'm a guy in case that matters for the story.

As for LA, you mentioned being a nerdy introvert. If it's practical to go to Pasadena, there may be something cool for you on the Caltech campus.

Also, I should warn you than LA is huge in terms of travel time, especially during commuting hours. If you rent a car, be prepared for gridlock, and for a lack of parking when you arrive. Public transit is ok but grimey.

I was under the impression it was efficient but still not done because petrochemicals were cheaper than renewable electricity.

I'm feeling a lot of grief at my old life going away (had a kid late last year). It's been a constant grind and all my hobbies and most of my self-care have fallen by the wayside. On top of that, I've had a friend move away for a job. Now my parental leave is ending, and I'm not looking forward to work stress on top of the stress I was already experiencing. On the plus side, the kid is adorable so I have that going for me.

People keep telling me it gets better. I suppose it has gotten a bit easier since the beginning, but I'm still facing multiple years of complete and utter dependence on us for his every need.

It goes even beyond that into missing incentives to make the data accurate and complete. It's hard to imagine rational ignorance and selfishness not fouling it up.

I think this is a vast understatement. I'd argue that this likely the hardest challenge. Aggregating and cleaning data is a bitch. Yes, "Data Scientists" and the like exist, but these job titles can mean a lot of things. Ensuring that disparate data from multiple sources are translated so that they can be congruently collated often comes with a lot of errors. I wonder what level of error discovered in an audit would be acceptable for the centrally planned economy.

I'm nominally lead software engineer at our company. I self-identify as a top contributor. I also perform the role of SRE; this is not recognized by the company however.

Did you just get lucky with your company, or is this issue something you prioritize when job hunting?

I'm not sure if I got lucky. I haven't been in the job market for 5 years, but if/when I return, I will definitely prioritize it. It's probably necessary to look at other sources of info besides interviews, like Glassdoor reviews. If you have a friend who works there, even better.

I feel you 100% on this. Fortunately my job does let me take 3-4 weeks off a year, with minimal overhead and pushback.

Why can't I just do the same work I do now, but for 20-30 hours instead of 40, with pay adjusted accordingly?

As mentioned in my intro post, I have a lot of weeds. My only hope for changing this without hired help is Grampa's Weeder. Once you get the hang of it, you can use it without from start to finish (including putting the weed in a bucket) without bending your back much.

Hi, I'm Aaron. I'm a late 30s tech worker living in Southern California; I'm a pretty vanilla dude, really -- married, with a baby on the way. House with a lot of weeds in the back yard.

I came here from Reddit, which I've been on for like 13 years. I'm trying to pretend this is not a rebound site, but its own thing that I won't compare to the old site. Breakups are hard!

I'm into bike riding, hiking, scuba, game development (I've been heavily committed to making a multiplayer game out of Conway's Game of Life since 2016), hard science fiction, and looking up random stuff on Wikipedia.
