I've had cars/coupes/sedans my whole life. Within the past year I traded my Nissan Sentra for a Honda HRV. While I did need the extra space for hauling work samples, it also felt increasingly like people just didn't see me on the road when I was driving the Sentra. I kinda hate the HRV and am considering another car, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about driving something smaller when everything else on the road is a behemoth.

Factor in the cost of milk for the cereal and you're looking at $8/week just to eat shitty cereal for breakfast.

not to mention they are literally part of the grave of the freaking Titanic. This story is absolutely insane and although incredibly sad, also morbidly fascinating.

I've heard this said before, but reading it this time, for some reason, makes me envision a movie/story of ghosts "living" on the titanic wreck. Alone for 70+ years on the ocean floor, then they start seeing submersibles, and now there are 5 new ghosts from the future.

I'm betting it will never be fully known what the exact failure point was.

We'll have to wait and see if we ever get any of the official communication transcripts between the sub and mother ship. There's an unconfirmed transcript going around now that the sub crew heard cracking sounds and the hull alarms were going off before they tried to ascend and ultimately lost contact.

Orwell wrote about a system where you were required to watch it. Fortunately we don’t have that.

We're not required, no, but I'd say for the average person it is almost forced. Like OP mentioned, unless you've curated your feeds, that is the type of media you're going to be flooded with on every social media platform and news site.

Personally, I don't use social media outside of Reddit, and I guess Tildes now, and had my Reddit feed pretty heavily curated to my specific interests and locality, but still saw that type of content creeping in more and more, especially in larger subreddits.

It's becoming really hard to escape.

Honestly, they're a pain in the ass. I use them to stream O's games b/c I'm not paying for a cable package just to watch baseball, but it's not a particularly enjoyable experience. It beats nothing, but it's really annoying that sometimes streams just don't work, freeze regularly, can't always pick home or away feed, and they always lag a decent amount behind real time.

Nice to see Gunnar turning it on after a rough start. He might make me forget about Manny. Cowser and Westburg contributing immediately has also been a nice boost. Pumped for the 2nd half!

Commentary volume is much lower here, but to a far superior quality. I'll often be halfway through a comment and think "nah, I don't really need to say this / it won't improve the level of dialogue" etc

I literally just bought tales of the space age yesterday lol!

I've only built the first one (the blue with the comets) so far and, honestly, I wouldn't say it was a particularly enjoyable build. It was very quick, but does looks quite nice. There's also 3 more to build, so maybe I'll change my mind.

In the $50 range, I think the bonsai tree is a great option. The 3-in-1 tiger was also a neat build (and has alternate options) and the beach camper may be one of my next pick ups.

Not sure if any of those speak to you or not, but I think they are more fun and interesting builds than tales of the space age, by far. But, it's Lego, so you really can't go wrong! And any of the will look great!

I don't really care for Star Wars and I'm not a big enough LotR fan to collect those sets either, so I'm probably not the best person to ask if you want a set centered around those themes. The only Star Wars set I have and will probably ever own is the trash compactor diorama just because I so vividly remember watching that scene with my dad. I will say, the new Rivendell is gorgeous though!

$300-$500 can get you a lot of Lego, or just 1 or 2 really nice sets. That said, for just getting into Lego, I'd start with something smaller and see how you like the experience.

I'm a big fan of the Icons and Ideas themes. They have awesome details and make great display pieces. The lunar lander, space shuttle, orchid, and Ecto-1, are some of my favorites from my collection, and I definitely plan on getting the van Gogh starry night set at some point.

If you like cars, the speed champions theme is also a really good starting point. Low cost, interesting build techniques, and you end up with some great models that take up very little space.

If you end up getting something, let me know what you choose and how you end up liking it!
