I've had cars/coupes/sedans my whole life. Within the past year I traded my Nissan Sentra for a Honda HRV. While I did need the extra space for hauling work samples, it also felt increasingly like people just didn't see me on the road when I was driving the Sentra. I kinda hate the HRV and am considering another car, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about driving something smaller when everything else on the road is a behemoth.

I have a Tesla Model Y--so not a big car, but certainly not a small car, and last night I got completely blasted in the eyes by a big SUV's headlights as it went around a roundabout because its headlights were at the same level as my eyes. I get the supposed safety reasons for pedestrian deaths (although I'm skeptical of those reasons), but I just don't understand why the heck cars can't just have headlight height regulated and standardized.

There’s another story going around that US regulations on headlights keep innovations from Europe from coming here.

Yeah, my headlights are capable of much more than they achieve...and that's true even before considering the shitty way Tesla implemented the automatic brights!

Bumper height also needs to be regulated (and it should be low to the ground in my opinion). At the moment bumper height is regulated by class of vehicle, meaning that a sedan's bumper does not line up with a truck's. This leads to collisions often being much worse than they otherwise would be, because a truck's bumper could hit your engine block instead of the bumper, or worst case your car might go right under the bumper and you get decapitated.

The problem is, unless your car shows up on their phone, they'll never see you. I could give you probably in the low hundreds of examples per year that happen to me or around me directly.

Last summer my son needed a car to work, he doesn’t like the look of modern cars so we found a 1996 Buick Park Avenue an hour away. This is considered to be a “large car” but when he was following me home he seemed dwarfed by pickup trucks and large SUVs.

Notably the HR-V is one reason my my next car might not be a Honda. I adore the Honda Fit I drive (my second) and would probably get another if I could. Last time I went looking for a Fit they had no new cars in stock and just one used car they had gotten the day before. But they did have 100 HR-Vs in a row that nobody had bought and tried to push me into getting one.

If I wanted to get pressured into getting a bigger car than I want I’d go to an American car dealer because I’ve seen them playing that game since I was a kid in the 1970s.

I'm a big fan of the Fit. There aren't any new ones in stock because it was discontinued in North America in the 2020-2021 range. There are some nice looking new models, but they're only available overseas. Same old story of our trash domestic market and misguided-to-malicious regulatory situation pushing out good cars in favor of ones that have worse mileage, safety issues, and laxer emissions restrictions due to CAFE.
