Up to now I’m happy with the $5 one because i only use Kagi for non-trivial searches. Most of my searches are so easy that any search engine would do, like typing a website’s name to get to it.

So I default to a free engine (Google or DDG for example), and configure my browser to use Kagi if I start with “k “. Of course it means I need to think of adding that whenever I’m about to search something that isn’t stupidly easy to find.

I don’t pay for privacy, as you said there are other options that provide it for cheaper. I pay because the search results are better.

I find this take on AI coding interesting, it’s not just about autocompleting boilerplate. Note: I submit with the first sentence rather than the page title because it’s more descriptive IMO.

I have a similar experience, when trying to use DDG I found myself switching to Google often.

Now I use DDG for trivial searches (which are most of them), and I pay for the cheapest Kagi plan for anything not very straightforward. Sometimes I still use Google, in particular when looking for something very local, or to find where to buy something.

I advise to buy their silicone USB C cable with it. It’s very flexible and more heat resistant than normal ones, which matters for this use.

Personally I’ve switched to paying for Kagi for searches that are not straightforward.

I’ve also been more and more disappointed with Google (and others), and I find Kagi to be worth its price. I know most people won’t consider paying for search of course, but for those who do I advise trying it.

I got the smallest plan (5$/month) which gives me a limited amount of searches (unlike the higher one). I make it work without much pain by configuring a free search engine as default, and prefixing the search by “k “ to use Kagi. This way it’s always on hand but I don’t use up searches for trivial ones.

“Chocolatine” is strictly the same as “pain au chocolat”. It’s just a different name for the same thing in a different part of France.
