Reddit gold was originally a way for Reddit to earn money to pay for server costs. Now they’re using premium subscriptions and ads I suppose they don’t need to earn money through awards, although I’m not sure how removing coins and awards will affect existing subscription numbers.

If they are going with a way to cash out Karma for money as the article suggests, then reddit is going to become almost entirely corporate and unusable for me. Look at YouTube and how much algorithm manipulation there is in order to game the system and earn as much money as possible, expect the same for reddit as bots and content farms abuse every trick they can to squeeze as much money as they can out of reddit. You thought astroturfing and bots were a problem now? Imagine when there is a direct monetary benefit.

Premium is going from a subscription to gain benefits (coins, awards, snoos originally were only for gilded users), now premium is instead a way to remove negatives. (no ads), it doesn’t feel as good…. Create a problem, sell the solution

I also like how they mention users not liking the clutter of awards as a reason to remove all of them, they didn’t have to add so many different types of awards…

I’m nowhere near experienced, but I’m currently playing around with Bevy and a bunch of its libraries to create a simple 3D game, mainly for fun and to learn rust practically.

Renet for networking, Rapier for physics (and character controllers!?), Dolly for advanced cameras. I love how the ecosystem is at the sweet spot of new enough to still be super rough around the edges and rapidly change, but old enough to offer a suite of libraries for newbies to play around! Its enough to start learning if you have prior programming experience, anyways.

The ECS model of game development also really speaks to me too as a developer familiar with the MVC way of doing things.

You’ve probably already seen this, but I can highly recommend tantan on YouTube, he’s using Bevy to create a 3D Voxel ROG game similar to cube world!

uBlock Origin and SponsorBlock are a must.

uBlock Origin works well enough for me right out of the box. Sponsor Block I like to recolour sponsored segments to the same colour as Youtube Ads for a more seamless feel, and I enable auto skipping for everything but engagement reminders.

YouTube Enhancer can be used to mostly kill shorts (removing them from your homepage, showing you shorts as regular videos if you do visit one, and gives you a couple more options such as flipping videos and reversing playlists. Firefox is king!

Three of my family members use YouTube on their TVs and Tablets, and me and my friend use YouTube on our phones for our commutes, so I used my VPN to purchase YouTube Family Premium for all of us (5 people in total). YouTube music comes bundled with it, which I actually prefer to Spotify, and downloading videos is super nice. I buy it from Turkey for TRY 59.99 which translates to ~£1.85 or ~$2.30 a month. My bank cards I have used are my Monzo/Starling cards, who don’t charge exchange rate fees.

India also worked for me in the past and is the cheapest, but I had too much trouble resubscribing after my bank card expired. It also required me to manually pay every month as Indian bank laws don’t allow automatic monthly payments apparently.

You’ve already mentioned using an app for remembering groceries, why not extend that to the first scenario too?

I use Apple Reminders on my phone and the amount of times its helped me remember tasks that I can’t/don’t want to complete in the moment is staggering! I find setting timed reminders and a reminders Widget is very useful if you din’t find yourself habitually checking your lists.

Another pro tip: You can actually save emails directly to reminders, and it will create a link to the email for you in the reminder

I always find myself rewatching this video every few months when YouTube re-recommends it to me, it really scratches that “How Is It Made?” itch and I enjoy the presentation

Can you fit a whole game into a QR code?
Technical challenge videos like this are one of my favourites, and code optimisation is my favourite kind of programming content to watch. The rest of his channel is also overall excellent

going fast is about doing less
In a similar vein the last video, this video does a deep dive on the optimisations you can apply to Day 19 of the Advent of Code 2019 (an annual coding challenge every December). Extremely satisfying seeing how smart people have solved complex problems!

Shiey & The Art of Trespassing
Less this video in particular, but the channel that this video introduced me to. Shiey instantly became one of my favourite channels to watch on YouTube

Star Wars - The Genius of John Williams
Despite me having no musical knowledge or experience, this video is enthralling, it also helps that you’re listening to John Williams excellent music while watching

How We Made MuseScore 4 - Music App Design is Challenging
One of the most interesting Devlog style videos I’ve watched, very well presented and has a variety of topics such as UI/UX, Technical challenges, some product management and a piece at the end on the importance of Open Source

Why Iroh is the Pinnacle of Masculinity and The Philosophy of Uncle Iroh: What does it mean to be a man?
Media analysis videos are another of my favourite genre of video, and it definitely helps that Avatar Last Airbender is the media being talked about in these videos.

Very insightful, and I wholeheartedly agree with your conclusion that if we don’t change our habits then we’re doomed to fail. I want to say that this is true for all things in life, not just losing weight. Want to learn a language? Become an artist? Run a marathon? Unless you make a habit out of achieving these goals then as you said, you’re likely to lose any progress you’ve made given enough time
