Expanding foam. It comes in cans that are easy to carry and if you use it between the joints, it will stop movement. If you're able to get it into a small crack and into the internals, you might even damage it enough to stop it from receiving signal.

This is all just hypothetical though. I've never used expanding foam, so it may not work fast enough or be strong enough to physically stop one of these things.

Maybe not as drastic as throwing all my computers in the lake or cracking open the TOR browser, but I ended up quitting a lot of social media platforms all at the same time and it felt very freeing. The only social websites I still use are Tumblr, this site on occasion, and some forums. I also don't keep any of these apps/sites loaded on my phone and I've ended up reading a lot more. I told my friends I don't use tiktok and only have tumblr and much to my surprise, instead of telling me to download the app or that I have my own head up my ass, they shared that they've been wanting to use tiktok a lot less and that they'll just send me the link or a screenshot if they want me to see something. I find the internet is so much better when it's been filtered through your friends' eyes (and several ad blockers/privacy extensions).

It did make me a lot happier at first, getting rid of all the junk, but misery has its own way of following me, so even under better circumstances I started feeling worse again. At least this time, when I've been feeling rotten, I no longer end up scrolling through the news until I find people that are being ripped limb from limb half a world away.

If you think it will be an improvement in your life, do it. I don't regret that I've stopped using a lot of these sites and I don't think I ever will. You don't have to quit the whole thing and move to a cabin in the woods, but if you notice that using the internet doesn't make you feel well, then try to find ways to use it less or to use it differently. Don't be afraid to use the smaller sites, forums, or IRC if you really want to talk with new people without the bloat of the modern web.

So I'm not the only one!!! I've always gotten incredibly irritated by ads my entire life, even when I didn't use the internet so much as a kid. Even the ads on tv would get on my nerves, all the flashing colors, annoying voices, and tinny music pissed me off an irrational amount. Everyone around always told me I was overreacting and I could never figure out how everyone else could be so calm about ads. I guess I know now though lol. Thanks for sharing this! I feel a little less crazy now.

I finally decided to try out Ubuntu on my laptop and usually I would just append site:reddit.com to my search whenever I have a question, but EVERY linux subreddit is private right now. Now if I'm having a problem or need to find out how to do something I have to rely on the documentation and stackoverflow

This context collapse is very frustrating to me. I think that it's also a result of 'the internet' as a whole becoming something mainstream. Once it became socially acceptable to talk about the internet with people in public, it also sort of became expected that you have social media accounts that you can add people on as well. There used to be a clear split between 'online' and 'irl,' but I think that's gone now.

It honestly worries me. For example, I have to consider whether or not I'll be rejected from jobs in the future because they find it suspicious that I don't have personal social media for them to do a background check on.

Yes, I feel the same about this. Once you incentivize quantity over quality (for that tasty ad revenue) everything becomes watered down and bland. Once you figure out what makes money (or gets attention) you don't have to try to show anything new, exciting, or different to your audience. It starts to be a race to become a performer, not to share with others.

However, if you want to make custom themes you can use an extension like Stylus and write your own CSS. I like doing this for websites that I use a lot and I've made some personal themes for reddit, tumblr, and youtube so far. I've thought about making one for this site, but I haven't used it enough yet. I also like the simple design of this website and my themes are probably a little too 'loud' for it lol

I've read quite a few books recently. I've mostly been reading a ton of fanworks the past couple years, but I decided to get back into reading books now that I have a library card and more time to. Here are some that I've enjoyed recently:

    • The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
A set of sci-fi stories that are very pleasant to read. I thought the main character was very entertaining and a little too relatable at times.
    • Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan
One of those books that I feel everyone needs to read. My favorite part of reading this was going to Nasa's website every time Sagan mentioned an "upcoming development" and seeing how the mission went. A brilliant read.
    • The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
A very good prequel to the Hunger Games series. Collins is a good story teller and this was a very interesting story to read.

    Books I am currently reading:

    • The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan
    • The Maze Runner by James Dashner

The internet was once an illicit porthole into someone else’s life, rather than a proud declaration of their existence that might stoke enough engagement to get a sponsorship deal.

I'm not even a millennial, but this is mostly the problem I've been having with the internet. Nothing feels genuine or "real" and what's posted isn't even unreal in a fun or exciting way. It feels as if everyone decided they needed a face that wasn't their own, then decided to put on a equally bland, boring face. Who are my peers even trying to masquerade as at this point??? What's the point of playing pretend with everyone if you aren't having fun or enjoying yourself?

I've grown mushrooms from spore prints before and from cloning tissue that I've foraged. I've foraged a few types of easy to identify mushrooms- things like oyster mushrooms, chicken of the woods, and hen of the woods. I've successfully cultivated cultures (that I still have in my fridge lol) from the oyster mushrooms and COTW.

Mushrooms are super easy to cultivate once you know how they work and you have a sterile space to work in. It's amazing to me how you can grab a clean spore print or a clean piece of the fruiting body, put it to agar, and have it grow. It's seriously cool. If you want to see a bunch of really informative write ups I recommend the Shroomery's forums. It's a website mostly meant for the less legal side of growing mushrooms (thus pertaining to mostly dung loving mushrooms), but there's also information about growing and foraging gourmet mushrooms too.
