Yeahh the abuse is one of those "this is why we can't have nice things" unfortunately. It would've been nice as a feature just for the sake of having a complete feature set for the people that need it but alas.

Still a bitching VPN though. If port-forwarding isn't necessary then it's probably one of the better, if not the best, VPN around.

On the contrary though, I do understand how someone could bounce off of it. Not all games have to be a monumental challenge to overcome, but some are and that's also cool.

I was debating myself whether or not I'd respond because I don't particularly feel the need to debate the nuance when you're absolutely correct and almost any response would seem like I'm weaseling my way into Nazi apologism. In order to prevent that, let me be clear about this: I acknowledge that the damage of "just jokes" to so many people exceed an unacceptable threshold, and promoting Nazi ideology in any form should be condemned.

I suppose I wrote my post in the hopes that I could shine a light and create a little understanding in the cultural background of the individual. One that likely grew up in a similar environment to myself. An individual that might not see the significance of these jokes because of their experience growing up in the 90s and being taught about the war and atrocities extensively.

Nazism lives differently in the minds of the previously occupied. My father had difficulties throwing food away for his entire life, courtesy of the Hunger Winter. But he also loved telling the story how he'd be forced to salute by German soldiers but would mutter the words "Ein Liter" instead, as the only form of rebellion a child could muster. Even then, laughing away the horror is the least you could do.

Now I don't have a particular response to your link. If done purposefully that's pretty damning but I did mention I have no context around PewdiePie specifically so I couldn't tell you whether or not he was intentional in any of his actions. I never meant my earlier response as a defense for PewdiePie specifically, but rather wanted to highlight the general feeling us 90s European kids have around the topic. If anything, I hope that makes a little sense.

Like in Breath of the Wild I only use potions, because healing by eating food doesnt feel realistic.

I could see the argument that potions are just medicinal teas I suppose.

Unless you mean the Skyrim variant of eating 50 wheels of cheese in less than a second then yeah I get you.

Plenty of headset suggestions so I'll add a different type of tip: Rub a little tabasco on your cables and they're mighty cat proof. Don't overdo it, you don't want to torture the poor feline, but a little goes a long way in stopping them from wanting anything to do with that spicy rat tail. Usually the vinegary smell is more than enough to get them to turn around in disgust and if it isn't, a little lick will settle it.

If you're against using napalm, cats also hate citrus. Both vinegar and citrus are rather acidic so once you're sure a cat won't eat through the cable, make sure the acid isn't eating your cable too.

This entire situation reminds me of when German boardgame company Hans Im Glueck decided to trademark the fan originated term Meeple, causing deep rifts within the boardgame community and spawning an initiative by a YouTuber to trademark it in the States (ostensibly to defend it from being used by companies as a stick of law).

So, trademark squatting is not necessarily uniquely connected to US capitalists. The famously litigious Germans aren't above the practice either!

As kids, we used to take school trips to concentration camps. I don't know anyone that didn't crack at least one distasteful joke, or laugh at one of them, while in the camp. I'm loathe to say "boys will be boys" because one it's dumb and two it presupposes boys can't learn to be better, but it's absolutely true that teenagers are stupid regardless of their actual beliefs. None of us believed those jokes to have more substance beyond a cheap laugh.

Long story short, young people do grow out of their juvenile phases. For teen boys within countries that have seen occupation by the Germans the jokes were offensive for the sake of offense, not on behalf of the rehabilitation of Nazism.

I'm not trying to go to bat for PewDiePie, I don't think I've watched him back in the day nor now so I have no stakes in this, but know that the attitude of 90s kids within the North Western Europe cultural zeitgeist did consider bad jokes to be just bad jokes and not a ringing endorsement of racism, fascism, Nazism, or other isms.
With the advent of the internet we admittedly took a considerable amount of time to adjust to the rest of the world and learnt the world wasn't as appreciative or forgiving of these mistakes, but we're getting there.

I've been gravitating to specific content creators with healthy and mature communities instead. Rather than the mass market appeal of sites like Reddit, you get a much more curated and interest specific group of people that clump up because they share certain values.

This isn't an easy suggestion, it requires you to find and cultivate a relationship within a community that resonates. Plus you always have to keep in mind the parasocial aspect and how groups can turn into a bit of a cult of personality.
I've been fortunate enough to find a community I want to participate in without feeling like I'm imposing on the creator or the community. It may speak for itself I've shared Tildes to that group of people too, as some were looking for healthier browsing habits.

To your point though, this isn't a suggestion that will put you in contact with a lot of people a la Twitter or Reddit. My experience is that smaller communities are much more effective in keeping the quality of communication at a high level so there's a clear trade off. I've been feeling much less frustration online by doing so.

Side note: my personal favourite suggestion in this thread is piracy groups. I can see how those groups automatically filter based on willingness to participate in good faith, as even the concept of sharing more than leeching supports that environment.

I'm not so far gone that I give myself all the hard drives. I think being tech gated and getting those alt recipes yourself is part of the journey of naturally expanding your factory, but the arbitrary rock blocking access to the red woods can go kick rocks.

Biomes did matter earlier in the development. Sometimes the aliens were more dangerous, access to biomes was tech limited, and you still can't find specific resources in some. The latter is most notable on new starts still.

They kinda.. scope crept themselves out of that design choice. It used to be you needed some Nobelisks or something or other fancy tech to reach certain biomes. Nowadays you just build a power tower at max range and zipline across any and all barriers pretty much opening up the entire world as early as tier 4.

Turns out that most people "just want to build man" so the whole seriousness of biomes was mostly dropped.
I think that change in focus made the factory building of the game much more pronounced (and imho better for it), but for some it may feel like the world is mostly a static and vaguely alien set piece. Window dressing if you will. And that's probably true too.
I don't think weather effects will make it feel significantly different.
