There are other public toilets in Paris that let women pee sitting down. This is, in total, too heavily slanted to men, but women do have options.

:Today’s news of @JamesGunn’s firing is quite shocking on a number of levels. I sense unpacking this thing will involve 80,000+ word books. Seriously, it goes from #metoo to time limits on policing thoughts, all the way to the US’ political divide with Gunn at the center of it.

:That being said, expect them to rehire him in some capacity. GOTG made $1.6 billion dollars for $DIS

Edit: I'm stupid and didn't say billion.

That doesn't tell the entire story. While it is true that just reading content only might not really require encryption - encryption does make it harder for MIM attacks to happen, thus avoiding more possible malware. In addition, fewer and fewer sites are for "just reading" and they include code for tracking users and even their specific mouse movements and scrolling on screen- not to mention ads that track and commenting systems that require logins. More and more data is being extracted about a web users than ever, and encryption might keep this "more" private.

The fact that https connections to malware sites is so easy today is probably a good thing in the long run.

I don't think they'll really bury them, especially for the really good and relevant stuff - they'll just always get an SEO hit, making it harder for new , good stuff to surface.

The most important metric of all: Usability.

Parts of that are clearly measurable, like power, usefulness, tools, features, performance. But, I feel the more important are the hard-to-measure metrics that make these devices so usable (and why you still have one, and why I'm typing this with a Macbook Pro right now). I'm talking about things that are so good they fade away and you might not see them. Like superior sleep/hibernate/power performance, like the very useful migration options/features, like reliable nature of this hardware/software mix (when it's working of course), like fairly innovative things that Apple eventually scrapped like Magsafe and the keyboard (the good one before this crappy one I'm typing with now).

Apple essentially made something they designed from (presumably) the ground up to work for their software, MacOS. While nothing is perfect, this design paradigm has made some of the most amazing laptops verses the "Design it for everything" approach to Windows that is essentially abstracted from all manufactures' hardware designing for that platform.

But, Apple is taking these rock solid machines down a very dark path, eventually leading to custom chips, no backwards compatibility and the general death of the product. Perhaps there's no way to reverse this and I'll have to run a garbage Windows laptop again.

I share your "meh" feelings about it. Much of it is trash for sure. And I have many of the trappings of this "home automation" wave including a smartphone controlled garage door opener, a centralized NAS,, A computer attached to my TV, a MAC running a VPN/DNS Server, network cabling throughout the house, three access points, and (so far) 6 digital cameras and three digital assistants (Google) and a Google Nest.

The trouble is most of them are clunky and cumbersome, there's no real interoperability with everything (Wouldn't it be nice to just bark at my phone "Ok Google, open the garage"), but it isn't possible. So I open the app on my smartphone, login to the app because it's been a long time and then press the damn button on the screen hoping it wasn't disconnected in the last three months somehow. This is not very good, or useful when one simple button opens the thing if I walk there.

Don't even get into the nightmare of dealing with several different camera vendors.. Nest Cam, Unifi, Dlink, etc, etc.. they all have their own way, their own different software with different features and the added eff you of transmitting all this media in a standard format to lots of different places locally or in the cloud.

There are light controls (I don't have them) and door controls (I don't have them) that seem like they could be useful. But, for now doing thing like "Hey Google, turn the temperature down to 22" does feel useful.

The larger automation systems that control more.. like appliances, etc in one console are out there too.. but I imagine they're pricey. I don't think this space has really hit it's stride as far as providing useful, yet powerful and killer tools in a standardized way.

    But, hands down: Total Commander

For the maturity and longevity of the software, fair licensing, the absolute usefulness it brings to Windows' basic tools, and the clear contrast on any other platform that doesn't have a Total Commander type GUI file manager (try finding anything close to this on a Mac). Total Commander is the first app I install on a Windows computer and the last one I remove.

Perhaps you could say “There’s no costing because Wynne’s books need to be seen first” - but the PCs know what their own promises will cost.

And, as of advanced voting day, the PC platform and associated costs did not exist on the PC website (or anywhere else). The seemed very amateurish to me. They’ve since explained costs, but not where they expect revenue.

    Brutal.

I would agree, but also I think it might be too narrow. I think the missing pieces might be intent and context.

If it's clear the intent of the commenter is to degrade the civility of a conversation and the context of the conversation's civility is not setup to be degraded (hey, weird yes, I think it could be possible - people are complex.. maybe that could be a fun thing), then I'd say that's a toxic user.

Intent is a very difficult thing to measure and judge, so I think the people doing this have to be careful and very mindful of their choices.

Was on a mobile phone, added comments when I was able to. Still working through this mobile interface.

In fact, I saw paralells (not equvalancies, I have never said I think these comments were the same, nor do I, umh, think that). I made an effort to be as correct as possible to avoid overly pedantic responses.. but in that regard I clearly failed lol.

Also, just thought it seemed worthy of discussion, and given the number of responses here, (even with my imperfect way of expressing the point) seem to validate that thought.
