I have the Luxe but in all honesty, with my luck, it's probably just my unit that is weird. When the light is cooperating, it's fine and deffo helps when I'm not fighting with it.

Wow, this is amazing, and would be amazing to set up. Looks like I'll have to go down this rabbit hole tonight and see how I could build one sometime in the future.

Oh, I hadn't considered looking into a 'holiday light timer'. I'll deffo dig into this a bit deeper, even for other projects.

It may just be my unit that is the issue, a slight breeze will knock the power cord out for me, and it's really annoying. Especially since the orientation of the port is such that you have to plug it in against gravity.

This setup sounds awesome though. I'm going to try a few different things this weekend and see what I can recreate.

Hello! Hopefully this is the right place to ask this, but I was wondering if anyone here was using a SAD lamp, and if you have any recommendations.

    Tangent:
I currently live in a fairly dark apartment, and have a cheapish SAD lamp that is pulling double duty to not only brighten the room, but also keep me from going crazy in the darker winter months. It seems in an age of smart-everything, I've struggled to find something to replace mine with.

I currently have a Verilux HappyLight, but it kind of sucks ass. The power cord always falls out, pressing the power button might be enough to loosen the power cord. The settings have to be set every time you turn it on. It's just total garbo in my opinion. I looked at smart bulbs, but they don't seem to hit the lumens I'm looking for.

I think part of the issue with my current setup is that I have to actually turn the light on, which you would think would be fairly easy, but with the issues above, and my sheer laziness it's basically an impossible task.

What I'm looking for is something that can be automated, I think one of my major issues I've had in the last year is that I haven't been able to wake up to the morning sun as I had previously. It takes hours before I actually feel awake. I've gone from a morning person to some sort of bizarre afternoon person.

Anyway, I'm looking for others experiences and recommendations.

I highly recommend Before The Green Moon. I'm surprised to see it only has a hundred or so reviews, but maybe it's because the market is saturated with 'farming' sims. Regardless, if you like old school harvest moon, or even gc era Animal Crossing, this game has a vibe much like that.

I’m not entirely sure what qualifies a game as obscure these days, but here are a few games I’ve played recently. I’m also including a few games that are high on my wishlist, but need to wrap up some games in my backlog first.

    Played Games

    Infra (3000+ reviews)
Infra has you take on the role of a government worker who is tasked with inspecting the city’s infrastructure. While the game starts out fairly straight-forward it has a pretty interesting story with some cool twists and turns along the way, all while keeping the gameplay around inspecting. I think it’s a cool take on a walking simulator with added puzzles.

    Obenseuer (1000+ reviews)
Obenseuer is basically a pseudo-sequel to Infra, but it’s a survival crafting game. You come into ownership of an apartment block, and must renovate it so that you can rent out the units to the citizens of the area. I haven’t played it a lot, but I’m hoping to jump back in once it’s closer to release since it’s an early access game.

    Aneurism IV (3700+ reviews)
Very likely going to be my game of the year for 2025, Aneurism IV is a multiplayer-only game that I would consider in the same vein as Obenseuer, but with much lower stakes. You take on a series of roles and build karma to get better jobs. While some of the work may seem boring, it’s more about the social dynamics of playing in a world that is fully controlled by the players. The interactions I’ve had with people in this game have brought me back to the days of playing modded source games and GMod. It scratches an itch I didn’t even realize I had.

Voices of the Void (itch) I recently picked this up and I really have no idea how to describe it, to be perfectly honest. It’s a cross between Infra and Obenseuer gameplay wise, but the story and world it’s created has never made me feel so… tense? A game where you calibrate satellites and record deep space sounds shouldn’t make you feel this much tension. I don’t know a lot about where this game goes as I’m basically playing it blind, but I think that is the intended experience.

    Wishlisted Games

    Project Silverfish (1000+ reviews) a stalker-like ImSim.
    Peripeteia (1400+ reviews) a EYE/DeusEx-like ImSim.
    Lorn's Lure (2000+ reviews) - a Blame!-like parkour game.
MIK (unreleased) - Similar to Lorn’s Lure.

I've been trying out Shortcuts lately for simple tasks, rather than installing an app or package.

One of my most used Shortcuts is for capturing text with OCR and then saving it to my clipboard, this is great when someone sends a screenshot of something and I don't want to type it out. I also set it to use the keyboard shortcut of ⌘ + Shift + 7 as it opens the same cropping tool that taking a screenshot with ⌘ + Shift + 4 does.

Speaking of screenshots, the first thing I always do when I get a new mac is reset the default folder for screenshots to be for a folder in my home directory ~/Pictures/Screenshots as I prefer not cluttering up my desktop with them.

Here's a link if you want to try out the OCR shortcut:

It's pretty cool that it's a NIN score, rather than a Trent and Atticus score.

That is a great point, I also read Operation Paperclip and it took me a while to process it, but I think these things need to be brought to light/exposed to the public consiousness.

You should check out the book Bring the War Home. I haven't finished it just yet, but the opening chapters paint quite a picture of Post-Vietnam-War America. KKKK members starting their own border patrols, teaming up with neo-nazi's, and talk of dismantling the US government. I wanted to power through the book but every turn it made me feel more and more depressed knowing that these issues have existed for a long time.

As someone who typically avoids anime, I think the name Shinichirō Watanabe is enough to get me interested. Watching the trailer you can feel the hallmarks of his style right away, and the music definitely hearkens back to Cowboy Bebop. The plot in the trailer feels a bit similar to Knockin' on Heaven's Door, so that might be why it feels so familiar.

I like the physical keyboard, though I wish it was detachable.

I've been following The Light Phone (another minimalist phone) for years and hoping that it would meet my needs. Version III is coming out, and it's going up in price (currently $499, but MSRP is $799) while Version II is only $299. It's hard to justify when you already have a phone that does everything you want/need.

I think going the android route makes a lot of sense when you look at the light phone. You are beholden to what they will support. From the Light Phone FAQ:

There is not currently a music streaming tool for platforms like Spotify, or a way to call/message with other platforms like Signal or Whatsapp. There is not a Rideshare tool available, either. These features may be possible in future software updates.

Hopefully the Daylight will sell well, and they make a palm/phone sized version. The 60fps display will be a game changer for these minimalist devices.

Growing up on Toonami and the odd Syfy channel anime really left an impression on me. I have such vivid memories of watching Robot Carnival and Neo Tokyo. Namely, Construction Cancellation Order, which really felt like it was laying the groundwork for so much of the anime I came to love. Such as Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Roujin-Z.

As for truly transcending the boundaries I can't think of anything better than Paprika or really anything Satoshi Kon has worked on.
