Hello! Using Apple Music on Android currently because of a lengthy free trial I got. I'm using it right now as I type this. There are 3 things that immediately come to mind when talking about my experience using the app:

    1. Bugs
      • Clearly they don't have a QA team, because I've never come across a music app as buggy as this one. I recorded my screen to show you the most annoying bug I'm facing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzc2uGt3d6I. Even though I specifically searched for Something About Us by Daft Punk, it plays Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, which was my last liked song.
        • If this was some open source project, I'd gladly submit a detailed bug report. I'm not doing free labor for a $2.8T company.
        • I can submit my feedback to this form, but the latest Android version I can select is Android 10. I'm on Android 14. That shows me how much they care. I also doubt they'd go through the effort of reading it or communicating with me to get it fixed.
    2. Android Auto shenanigans
      • Apple Music's Android Auto functionality is pretty decent - far more usable than Tidal. There's just one issue that annoys me. Let's say I have a Queen album in my queue but decide I want to listen to another song. I press the mic button on the Android Auto touchscreen in my car and ask it "Play Aerodynamic by Daft Punk on Apple Music". After a brief pause, Google Assistant replies saying that Apple Music isn't responding. That's because when you check your phone, this menu pops up: https://i.imgur.com/NpYcUmP.png. Someone at Apple needs to realize that I cannot unlock my phone and take my eyes off the road to make a selection. Just play the damn song I requested.
    3. Slowness
      • I've gone in the settings and turned off all motion/animations. I find that they greatly reduce the performance of the app even on a recent phone like my Pixel 6a. With them off, the app performs fine.

There are multiple other UI/UX issues, but I'm not sure if they're specific to the Android version or if they also occur on the iOS version. I don't have an iPhone for to compare the experience.

It's not all bad. The integration with Shazam is great - I can access all my Shazamed songs in a playlist. (There's a Spotify integration as well.) Apple Music's recommendations are slowly improving. I like how it's focused on music, and doesn't shove podcasts down my throat when I don't want them. It doesn't have a terrible TikTok-esque UI. They pay artists better than Spotify and offer lossless at no extra cost. Aside from 2 songs, I haven't had issues with missing songs as compared to on Spotify.

I'm super basic.. A nice pepper jack does it for me. A local grocery store has Jalapeno, Habanero and Carolina Reaper infused Monterey Jack cheese slices. They're amazing for grilled cheese.

Looks like they also upped the storage on the $400 model to 256 GB. That still has the LCD screen though. Love how exciting the handheld market's getting.

    02 November update:

No. 3 was recently implemented on web and iOS. Nothing on Android yet. So far, the recommendations suck. I have a playlist for songs that are covers of other songs and Tidal provides me great recommendations that are actually covers. Apple Music doesn't.

Search is still an absolute disaster.

For a general user I agree it's overly complicated, and that there needs to be a simpler solution.

Even proprietary protocols like AirDrop can be hamstrung.

If your Apple account is eligible, you can get a 2 month Apple Music trial via Target. I'm currently using that and have my Tidal subscription paused so I can save a few bucks. I'm using it on Windows and Android. I used https://soundiiz.com/ to transfer my playlists.

I was using Spotify before Tidal. Ditched Spotify because of its atrocious TikTok mobile UI and a dumpster fire of a webapp.

    1. I like Apple Music's UI on Android. It's got fun album art animations and the UI is clean.
      a. I find the UX to be a mess. Webapp is also surprisingly buggy.
      b. Search on the webapp is awful when I'm logged into my account, but works perfectly fine when I try it in an incognito tab? I don't understand.
    2. Casting to a 1st gen Chromecast just doesn't work for me. YT Music can cast to it just fine. Update: Working fine now. Guess it just hiccuped.
      a. Apple Music can cast to a Google Mini speaker with no issues.
    3. Both Spotify and Tidal provide you song suggestions to add to your playlist. Apple Music doesn't do that.
    4. Apple Music's recommendations currently aren't great for me. It has only been a week so I guess it hasn't had much time to learn, so I'm not too harsh on it for this.
    5. Apple Music doesn't seem to have many searchable user-created playlists. Tidal has a few but Spotify is a clear winner here. I like user-generated playlists and usually prefer them over algorithm-based ones.
    6. I like the integration with Shazam. Shazamed songs automatically get added to a separate playlist. Shazam supports Apple Music and Spotify - I wish it did Tidal as well.

There's Privacy.com where you can create virtual debit cards that are locked to a specific vendor. Otherwise, companies like Citi and Capital One provide virtual credit cards as well.

    • Bills is $3 IAP for no ads and functions about the same as Subscriptions.
    • Tilla Premium is $2 and the UI is fairly similar to Subsciptions. Rather than showing the effective cost of each subscription per week/month/year, it shows when you are next going to be charged and how much - regardless of whether it's a monthly or yearly subscription. Some may like this, some may not.

Hi. Getting back to you regarding YouTube Music. I gave it a try again, using it for 3 days. These are my thoughts:

    1. YouTube still mixes liked music from YTM into YT. This is probably not an issue for 99.9999% of people, but I'm unfortunately one of the 0.0001% who gets annoyed by it. The music suggestions take up to 50% of real estate on YT on my laptop and phone when I don't want them. On laptop: https://i.imgur.com/dlVztmY.png, on phone: https://imgur.com/a/cCI1pP3
    2. YTM has the benefit of adding YT videos as music, which is extremely helpful. G-Eazy - Lady Killers II (Christoph Andersson Remix) is a track that isn't available on any streaming platform except for YT, so I'm able to listen to it on YTM.
    3. YTM has a larger user-created playlist library (like Spotify) compared to Tidal. Algorithm/recommendation-wise, I'd say they're equal.
    4. Tidal's UI is nicer.
    5. YTM seems to have finally added time-synced lyrics. It wasn't there the last time I used it.
    6. Tidal sounds a little bit better to me. Tidal is HiFi compared to YTM's 256 Kbps AAC/OPUS, but in all the audio tests I've done online, I'm rarely able to tell the difference between a high quality lossy and a lossless sound. This might be a placebo effect.
    7. YTM's Android Auto version is more functional than Tidal's.
    8. The music I like on YTM does not show up in my YT list of liked videos - which is good - except if I like a song using Android Auto. I guess their QA team missed that.
    9. I'm not a huge podcast guy. Spotify shoving podcasts to my face was one of the main reasons I left it. With Google doing what it does best - killing products - and moving Google Podcasts to YT Music, I'm concerned they'll mess it up as usual.

I haven't decided on how to proceed. I'd love to save $120/yr, but I'll have to spend some effort moving everything to YTM and hope that Google doesn't screw things up.
