Unrelated, but one of my biggest worries with the 556 (and Sinn watches in general) is the double AR coating. I’ve heard so many stories online of people getting the outer coating scratched. I get that it’s not a huge deal, but just seems like something I’d rather not deal with.

I kind of want to email Sinn and just ask if it’s possible to get one from factory with the coating only on the inside, just to see what they say.

Firstly, thanks for sending this, as I really did believe that Patagonia was genuine in their green and labor efforts. It’s so disappointing to see that they’re mistreating workers in the same fashion as other more notorious companies.

Either way, thanks for letting me know, since I was actually planning to buy more of my clothes from them in the future. Good to know.

As someone who routinely uses both OS’s I’d have to say I fully agree. macOS really shines in almost all tasks, and frankly I’d only recommend windows for gaming. The only big drawback with macOS is the lack of support for nvidia drivers, which unfortunately is critical for my work.

Even then though, I prefer Linux over windows, even though getting drivers working isn’t as straightforward. Not to mention that, at least for me, the vast majority of gpu utilization is over an ssh connection to remote servers anyway, so the lack of cuda support is not critical.

I also like that macOS seems to be more privacy focused than windows. Even if that’s just for marketing talk, I still prefer macOS to windows, which is baking advertising right into the OS.

I fully agree, most often the best option is to simply use what you currently own, and try to reduce consumption rather than purchasing anything new.

I personally don’t have any issues with them, though some people say that bag is not as feature rich as competitive products at the same price. Also a fair critique is that the side water bottle pockets are too small (but you can get add in pockets from Fjallraven to fix this if you have a really big bottle). Lastly I’ve also heard people say the straps aren’t very comfortable (especially for larger people). I’m pretty mid sized so it fits me well but your mileage may vary.

They are quite expensive I agree, but it seems to be very well constructed and I think it’ll have no problem holding up for several years. There’s posts on Reddit of people who have used theirs for over a decade with minimal wear and tear.

Also, I’ve heard that Fjallraven may not be as green as they claim so you may want to look into that as well.

I know the brand and bag don’t have the greatest reputation among enthusiasts but I have the Fjallraven Kanken laptop bag and it’s really great. As a student all I really carry around is my laptop, a couple notebooks and folders and some stationery, all of which fit great in the main compartment. I also use the smaller front pocket for some energy bars, my keys and wallet and a charger for my phone.

Overall the bag is still in great shape despite getting rained and snowed on repeatedly, as well as my general wear and tear. I don’t baby the bag at all and have dragged it through all sorts of pretty crazy adventures with friends and it’s lasted great!

I even use it as my personal item when I fly and it serves that purpose well.

Yeah the modding community seems so interesting, but like you said this hobby can really suck away time and money. I’m just going to stick to observing for now, but I really want to either mod a used Seiko or try one of those build your own kits.

Do you have any recommendations for diy kits that you liked? I know that Certina has the DS+ but I don’t think that’s truly a “build your own” like what you mentioned.

Currently I’m looking at the Sinn 556 A rs for a sort of sports/flieger type watch, or of course a seiko 5 or Christopher ward gmt. All seem like great watches at a fairly reasonable price point with movements that are easy to service.

A long term goal would be to own one of the Oris 400 caliber watches, but those are out of my price range for now…

I absolutely agree with you, in the sense that those scars are (for better or for worse) part of the Reddit OP’s person. Going further, the fact that those scars still exist is proof that the Reddit OP survived this traumatic period and is now thriving.

To me then, telling anyone to cover up such an intrinsic part of themselves (especially for strangers online) is definitely wrong.

However in a different direction, I think some trigger warnings are okay, for instance gore, death and so forth. Mostly because these are not warning people about real human characteristics. Open to having my mind changed though!

I’d imagine that CO2 emissions are probably the worse of the two, so EVs are definitely still a step in the right direction.

I suppose what I should have pointed out was that EVs are better than ICE but reducing our car dependence via improved public transit is probably going to be more impactful. Imo EVs are a great stopgap (much like this new Patagonia washer) but it’s imperative that we actually address our consumption as the root problem.

Pretty interesting read, I thought it would spark some interesting discussion.

Clothing and fashion in general are thought to be major contributors to climate change (because of the water and energy usage needed to grow and process cotton). I've already seen a few articles and YouTube videos mention reducing your wash frequency and preferentially using line drying instead of machines to conserve energy.

This was another source of pollution that, frankly speaking, completely blindsided me and was wondering what others here thought of this solutions, and other possibilities.

Side note, this really reminds me of automobile pollution, where EVs solved a lot of the direct emission based issues, but ignored (if not worsened) the tire particulate issues. These are the sorts of problems that make me believe reducing consumption overall is far more important that most articles seem to highlight.

This was an absolutely incredible read! Thanks so much for the complete write up!

Since you seem to be quite knowledgeable in this field I wanted to ask, is the extensive public transportation system in anyway affecting these developments? I'd imagine that the urban Japanese family probably does not have the same auto dependence that we have here in the west, so is that one of the reasons that their auto industry is not keen to change too quickly? Especially since EVs (and most novel auto innovations) come with a massive increase in cost...

Oh interesting... I didn't realize this was such a well known phenomenon. I think that especially since Tildes spans such a wide range of interests, this decline in quality might be even worse. For example, I follow some watch forums where there are joke threads, but since the entire forum is mostly watch geeks the tone of the overall forum still remains thoughtful, and the content remains high quality.
Tildes doesn't really have this one guiding philosophy of sorts, which would undoubtedly make it harder to keep the same seriousness with an influx of such 'comedic' posts.

Not to mention that there are already communities online dedicated to humor. Probably better to avoid turning Tildes into one of those when it already has its own unique identity.
