Anyone here into watches?

I would love to see some peoples collections, through text or through image links - all I can do is look for the most part given the prices of most pieces I find attractive.

There are lots of great options for all price points. If you're not looking to spend a ton but still want to get one from a brand that has a history of making watches, I'd look into Casio or Timex.

eBay is your friend, there are plenty of watches with an MSRP around 800-1000 that can be had for a few hundred dollars if you stay on the ball, and if you're getting something with sapphire crystal and stainless steel case, it'll look great for many years.

I kind of want to email Sinn and just ask if it’s possible to get one from factory with the coating only on the inside, just to see what they say.

Singaporean here. Yeah it's definitely a thing. I'm not a watch guy per se, but bought a Submariner (blue face) for myself and a Lady Datejust for my wife in a flash of petty self confidence after my first son was born. Now I have a second son, but much less petty self confidence after encountering kindergarten fees, so I have to save up for something on par so each can have one.

Love that Seamaster. Am considering a blue one for my second patrimonial watch.

I wore the Panerai for most of my time in sg (~15yrs). Wife and I decided to move to America and I wanted a new watch to mark the start of my next phase in life.

Buying in Singapore was still a bit expensive, and I’m PR so no VAT refund. DFS at Changi didn’t have the model I wanted.

Then while changing planes in Tokyo to go America, I passed an Omega shop. They had the design I wanted and It was like 20% less! I grabbbed it.

Been here ~4 years and my wrist is still very happy. So much lighter than the Panerai.

This is my first post here on tildes after getting my invite last night.

    I am into watches!

I’m wearing a 36mm Rolex explorer 1 as I type this note. Image link (not my image) Rolex is an odd brand because it’s the one everyone knows. To me there are two different era of Rolex, the tool watches and the flashy ones. Personally I enjoy the 5 digit serial number model (older have 4, newer have 6) and these models are a good mix between modern robust movements and classical style.

In my watch box besides me I have a Casio dw290 which is cool because it’s from mission impossible 1.

I have a Casio Dw5600 square which is my go to watch for doing gardening and chores.

Next up are my seiko Sarb 035 which is the white dial variant.

And I have a JLC reverso squadra home time, which is the most prestigious brand I own and the neat complication of that one is that it can track two time zones so you know what time it is at home when you call while travelling.

Finally I have an NTH Nacken which is a blue dive watch, this is my holiday watch and has been around the world with me, mostly Europe and USA. The neat thing about that one is that it is very thin and fits really well.

I’m the future I would like to own an Omega seamaster pro diver , and something from Nomos to round out my collection.

I found after buying the explorer I, which is arguably one of the most versatile watches ever made, that my collecting has slowed way down and I take a long time to consider adding another watch.

I'm not into watches, but I specifically went and bought the Casio F91W because 1) I have small wrists and 2) the small cult following it has gotten on /g/. I don't regret my decision -- it is very light and comfortable to wear, and if I lost or broke it I would just buy another one. Better yet, the watch face doesn't dwarf my forearm. If you want a small mechanical watch and you don't want to pay huge prices you can start looking at the much lower end of the market. These watches don't have the complications and they're not gold or silver (they might have a bit of thin plating that's wearing out) and they might not run as well as they once did. But for a whole we'd got these kinds of simple 7 jewel mechanical movements sorted out and they were things that just worked.

I loved Back to the Future as a kid. I was fascinated by the crazy technology and watches in the movie. I always wanted Docs silver Amritron Calculator Watch, but it was pretty hard to find.

I settled for Marty McFly’s Casio CA35 Calculator Watch from Back to the Future 2 and 3.

The Casio CA35 is a combination digital watch and calculator. It's got an eight digit calculator that can do addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. I remember math teachers hating it.

It's appeared in a few famous movies as well. It was worn by Walter White in Breaking Bad, the Joker in The Dark Knight, and Rick Moranis in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

I have gotten into watches more in the recent years, I have dreams to expand my collection but for now my only "luxury" watch is a Tag Heuer Formula 1. Yes, yes, I know it's overpriced for a quartz movement, but honestly that watch is what really sparked my interest in watches at all, as an F1 fan. I have a long way to go and many years to get there, I also love my collection of "cheap" Timex watches that I hot swap wristbands on at my leisure. Plus I'm a pretty big dude so a can rock the 43mm monsters and they look totally fine on my wrists.

I started with a Mudman, which was good. Then I upgraded to a Mudmaster. It looks stunning and was worth every cent, but... it's just too damn big for my scrawny wrist. Absolutely massive.

I finally settled on a G-5600E. It's not obnoxiously large like the others, but it looks great and it's solar charged. I've been wearing it every day for around 6 years now, and finally had to replace the resin straps and bezel one year ago. The battery is still going strong.

I'm a crane operator. I handle big heavy rigging, I assemble and disassemble cranes. Big tools. Sharp edges. My job is hard on kit. I have never managed to shatter a sapphire crystal, and the watches I've daily worn on the job still look new after years of abuse. I haven't bought a watch without sapphire in a long time and likely never will again.

I'm not into traditional watches, however I am interested in the evolution of smart watches. In undergrad at UIUC we were gifted Pebble watches and I really enjoyed it. It used an e-paper design and had a long battery life. I've tried a few of the newer android watches over the years, (Asus Zenwatch 2 and Fossil 5), and while I like the additional features, it feels like the decreased battery life of the more traditional display makes them a hassle to use.

My current favorite watch is the Vostok Submariner. It's relatively cheap compared to other watches people used to post on /r/watches but I still really like it.

I have two on the way from eBay sellers, one for myself and one for my wife.

I got started with the Casio MVD-107. VERY inexpensive for a very tough quartz dive style watch. But I had my sights set higher. I eventually purchased the cheapest decent automatic diver with a sapphire crystal I could find, a Phoibos Wavemaster, assembled in HK with a Seiko NH35 movement. I loved it, and wore it daily for about 5 years. I gifted it to a union brother who officiated our wedding after picking up my next piece, and he still wears it daily.

Around 2 years ago, I decided I wanted to try something new, and picked up a Glycine Combat Vintage 43mm. I've been steadily chasing the rugged, simple tool watch dream and this one has been fantastic. I got it for 275 USD on eBay, and wear it on a quality Milanese. It's beautiful, legible, and has stood up to daily wear in the trades.

It's time for something new, and my budget has increased dramatically.

I ordered myself a Sinn fully tegimented 836 to be my daily driver, and a Ball Trainmaster Ladies Moon phase with a mother of pearl dial for my wonderful wife. We both work in the trades, so we both need something that can withstand harsh environments.

As to the Sinn's double AR coating being prone to scratching mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Oops. I suppose I'll either hand polish it out, and have it replaced by Sinn if I manage to fuck it up. Either way I'm really excited.
