I mean, I won’t speak for all people, but I have 100% googled and read whole ass articles and Wikipedia pages before sending a comment on tildes on more than one occasion.

I’ve never done it to sound like an “expert” on a topic I have no background in, but I’ve definitely done it to add substance to a comment, fact check my own knowledge, and to learn more on a topic I’m already familiar with in the process.

People take commenting on tildes pretty seriously.

Those are all fair points, I think that @agnesnutter said it better than me about what my main gripe with megathreads is

If I’m looking for details on the most recent story, I don’t want to wade through the speculation about what the banging noises are and whether that indicates hope for rescue, for example.

It becomes an issue of navigation for me, you can click the most recent comment link to jump to "up to the minute" updates, but that has not always been a foolproof way of navigating new comments, even here on tildes where it is much more convenient to see new comments than reddit.

I don't like megathreads, I didn't like them on reddit, and I don't like the idea of them being here.

Once a megathread gets too mega it becomes a chore to read new comments with new info and it gets to a point where it's just better to have a separate, new, thread.

The idea of updating things like titles as stories develop is already occurring here on Tildes as you can see in the topic log of this post.

Megathreads have always felt like a lazy option on reddit to make moderation less of a headache and I can't remember the last time I saw a megathread pinned on reddit for 3 days with hundreds of comments and didn't roll my eyes and scroll past it, regardless of the subject.

Survey threads aren't for everyone, you can block the ask.survey tag if it gets too much for you as an individual, but for me I prefer survey threads sometimes because that's where tildes users really show themselves as individuals and community is developed, taking the human element of that away by them being recurring has never felt right for me.

The two Titan posts you pointed out is a good example of a flaw in that, but at the same time, if we get too worried about posting etiquette then people, new people especially, will be afraid to post anything.

I’d actually never heard of this recovery, I do know that recovery at that depth is definitely possible, it’s the rescue that I just don’t think we have the technology for. Keeping the pressure hull intact while attaching and whatnot to a vehicle resting on the bottom of the ocean without stressing the hull to the point of implosion is something that isn’t as easy as hooking onto a tow hook.

Though the wiki page you linked does say they the K-129 had an at least partially intact pressure hull, it had been subjected to “massive internal destruction”

It’s the rescue that makes it orders of magnitude more difficult than a recovery/salvage.

The main issue is that any rescue would have had to either mate another DSV to the Titan with a seal that also withstands the 4000m depth… which given it’s design, I doubt was ever possible, and this method is for like big submarines that have the mating surfaces for these rescues as a part of their design. And the most common rescue methods have depth limits nowhere in the ballpark of 4000m

And the only other would amount to a “tow” to the surface, which again, given the design shortcuts taken, was likely never possible in the time frame. And the structure of the Titan very likely could not survive being towed without imploding during the process.

Long story short, 4000m is DEEP

This morning an ROV from the vessel Horizon Arctic found the tail cone of the Titan submersible approximately 1600ft from the bow of the Titanic wreck.

They found additional debris, which is consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber.

Five major pieces were detected amid the debris around the Titanic site.

Among them, a nose cone, outside the pressure hull, and a larger debris field.

Cannot confirm whether the US Coast Guard will be able to recover the bodies of the five passengers on board the Titan sub.

"This is an incredibly unforgiving environment"

It is too early to tell what the timing of the implosion was

The US Coast Guard had sonar buoys out in the water for 72 hours. Since they had been in place, they had not detected "any catastrophic events"

I ask because I have gotten into cooking a lot more in the last six months or so and am looking to restock a spice rack I have had for years with things I will use. So nothing is too simple (salt/pepper) I'm just looking for ideas and looking to see what flavors the rest of Tildes enjoys!

So, it seems the most merciful scenario is what happened then... Likely dead before they even knew there was a problem. So that is good, to me.

I was following the story mainly because I am a former submariner. And it just sucked, because every scenario where they were still alive still likely ended with "and then they still die," because we just don't have the technology to rescue a vessel like that at 4000m. Like, they could have pulled another DSV up to the viewing port, seen them alive, but i'm still prettyyyy sure it would have still been death... the technology to rescue them just doesn't exist.

I saw another post about the deepest rescue ever being at around 400-500m for a DSV, this would have been 10x that, and easily the most impressive feat of search and rescue in human history.

Couldn't have paid me 250k to go near that DSV.

Oh for sure, I’m a full-time student at 30 and the walking I’m forcing myself to do has been enough to get me in the best shape I’ve been in in years and years. I’ve always struggled with gym routines and staying consistent so moving to a place that is walking distance to campus, but far enough that the walk is a good long one was a a perfect health choice for me, I think.

    That’s being active, isn’t it?

As far as health/fitness goes, I walk about four miles a day just because I don’t drive, so looking forward to more of that too with nicer walking weather! Been great for my health ditching the car and walking everywhere possible!

I'm just going to leave this conversation saying that it's still very much unsurprising to me that this happened. I just don't see how literally any other outcome from going NSFW was possible. Those mods went scorched earth, mods are not protected in any way, so reddit very understandably replied by going scorched earth in return.
