It's telling that population is not declining due to famine or something though. That doesn't corroborate the theory that we've reached the earth's carrying capacity.

It's takes a lot to convince me that the Earth doesn't already have too many people on it.

By what measure? The earth's carrying capacity? We still have a surplus on basically everything humans need. Food, water, space. Population is actually declining already, but its due to choice. Not famine or some sort of mass extinction. It seems clear the earth can definitely carry more than 8 billion people.

Nostalgia pandering is a loaded term. It gives nostalgia a negative connotation. I think a more nuanced way to phrase it would simply be if people like nostalgia. And frankly even that is pushing it - is it nostalgia to not prefer the new way of doing things? If I don't want my simple website to have 600 dependencies am I being nostalgic? You say yourself that Hollywood movies suck right now. Has that always been the case or was there a time in the past where it was better?

Hollywood remaking old titles doesn't strike me as nostalgia. It strikes me as yet another way to avoid being creative. Sequels, remakes, etc. Frankly they do a terrible job at scratching any sort of nostalgic itch because they inevitably do not feel like the original.

I guess the point is you can't prove there are growing problems from the original video. We can't know its not cherry picking. You ask a fair question but I think you'd either need to actually be there for long periods of time or look more at data. Data quality and collection can vary so I think people actually overestimate it compared to anecdotal experience, but watching someone's video doesn't even constitute anecdotal experience.

The main point I took away from the video was this observation (paraphrasing from memory):

People are increasingly informed about the world from 30-60 videos they see online

This is definitely true. The interesting thing is this isn't really displacing other information about the world. You aren't watching youtube shorts instead of traveling to Japan. It's just additional. And of course, extremely varied in quality. It can be true, or true and pushing an agenda, or false, etc.

In this way I think we are very tempted to think we know more about the world than we do. The world feels smaller and we feel more informed, but really we just carry around more preconceived notions, biases, etc.

Although more than anything, the emphasis placed on AI is probably more about playing on people's anxiety of an AI threat for clicks.

Not being able to version control diagrams is a pretty big problem. Code diagrams change within the lifecycle of the code. It naturally belongs within the same workflow.

Maybe it's just me but I really soured on mermaid after the official online editor/renderer got gated behind a login that aggressively tries to get you to sign up for a paid plan.

I tried to use it yesterday and it prompted me to start a free trial. I just left. It's hard to believe there is only a trial available before having to pay. Perhaps it's more permissive than I was led to believe. But I didn't stay around long enough to find out.

Mermaid is a good diagram code solution. And there are other editors.

I'm going to do the counter cultural thing here and phrase my thoughts from the context of "not separating" ... It's only because I assume everywhere you go you will be advised to ditch the dead weight

I appreciate your perspective. It is very hard to find relationship advice online that optimizes for keeping the relationship. Which is usually the outcome people want to achieve. Rather, it becomes a classification game based off the info that is shared by someone really fed up.

This weekend I made a beef roast. Whole picanha cooked as a roast and sliced thick - like prime rib basically. Salt, pepper, rosemary crust. Was excellent although the fat cap was a bit large, even for myself (who likes fat). Not sure if cooking it this way is a thing -- I only know it as steaks in Brazilian cuisine -- but I liked it a lot.

The next day I made steak and eggs with grits with the leftovers. I trimmed off 2/3rds of the fat cap and fried up the steaks in some of the rendered beef fat. I diced the fat trimmings and rendered them and added them on top of the grits. Eggs sunny side up.

The best part is the roast was $10/lb which is (sadly) reasonably priced for a steak-cut of beef in the US these days.

Your anecdote seems to contradict your anecdotal experience. That is, grocery stores with loyalty programs and cheap produce.

Anyways, I think stores with loyalty programs tend to have cheaper groceries overall, including produce. Although I don't think it's causal. Rather, large chains benefit from economies of scale and tend to have loyalty programs. Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Meijer, Albertsons, Target, etc. Local groceries tend to have higher prices. Some farmers markets can be cheaper but many of those are even more expensive.
